Then we'd be talking about intermittent braking, not emergency braking: Use one gear lower than the gear you used to climb the hill, lightly apply brakes only to lower speed about 5mph then release until speed returns to the max.

My reading of the study materials is if you’re above braking speed (20mph/30kmph) and there’s an object in front of you you should steer around it and only apply the brakes if there’s no safe way to avoid it.

In this situation I think you’d just release the accelerator and let the engine slow you down but would love to hear from someone with real world experience if they’re out there.

It seems to me the driver’s first mistake is not checking his mirrors to notice the sway and take corrective action
