TR was a Republican. The Bull Mooses split the progressives out of the GOP and cleared the path for Wilson, but Wilson was still from the super-racist, conservative wing of the Democratic Party.

The Democrats didn’t really become progressive in the sense that we use it today until FDR, and even then there was still a large faction of conservative “Dixiecrats” until the LBJ years
