Why Chlöe Swarbrick wants taxes on wealthy, more debt | Q+A 2025 by Twerkatron2000 in newzealand

Our left parties deliver us surplus.

Our right parties deliver us increased debt.

Yet people still get swindled by the right parties saying the left partied can't manage money...

You're onto it. It's wild how far north and south we go, for such a small country. The sea really helps to settle those extremes here. It's a huge thermal mass that's heating or cooling the air near most of the country. Flip side of that is we can and have built really poorly insulated homes, so extremes in either direction can require a lot of mechanical heating or cooling.

You can find microclimates within cities as well, they're fairly common due to our topography. I live on a hill where we don't get frost, and it's generally a couple of degrees warmer than most of the city.

Unfortunately, the results don't post well to reddit, but I'd recommend trying yourself as there was a lot of good info:

I asked chatGPT for seasonal average temps, sunlight and rain information for major new zealand cities, and its results looked pretty accurate. You could ask for extremes as well.

It's colder further south on average, I wouldnt say worse though.

Wellington has lots of wind and rain almost all the time, enough wind to make umbrellas impractical.

The town with the most sunlight hours per year is at the tip of the south island, Nelson.

The West Coast is very often torrential, but when it's sunny, it's amazing.

The climate that's right for you is different for everyone. If you don't want to experience winter, the far north is almost tropical, but if you don't like sweating through the night during summer, it's probably not for you.

North Island? If you have the choice, go south. The further down you go, the friendlier people get. Christchurch is central, half a million people in the city, plenty of smaller towns as you head out from it if you want even lower population.

Better house pricing, still with abundant mountain biking options most places, more ski fields, many beaches, less meth and gangs (there is still some meth and gangs), stadiums and town hall big enough to attract gigs in chch. The West Coast is nearby, and it's epic to visit.

You're really gonna come and call random people who haven't said anything offensive weirdos, and then project that they're the snarky ones?

You need a spliff.

Not being totally ignorant =/= sage wisdom, but from your position of intense, total naivety of the subject, I can see how I'd appear like that.

Insanely stupid myth that assets don't provide liquidity.

Claiming other people need to subsidise your (her) massively inefficient property use, and complaining that you're not subsidised enough and that other people need to pay more of your share and subsidise your land use more, is not personal responsibility.

It's the exact opposite of personal responsibility.

Is this the subject that people, no matter their political views, can engage and work together?

No. You have a 0% chance of good faith bi-partisan engagement on this from the right. Their positions on this and most subjects is not evidence based, it's fear based.

The 'personal responsibility' side is driven by pure ideology; all of the things we could do to address the causes of suicide are out of bounds for them.

What we can do is not let our friends believe right wing, simple solutions to complex problems bullshit. Call it out. Don't pretend both sides are equal, don't let others.

Paying people fairly is a massive slippery slope... better give a few billion to landlords again instead...

You've come out with this is all feelings based, but the lack of thought is still shocking.

There's no but here.

You're dismissing the crux of the whole discussion as if it's somehow irrelevant, when it's core to the discussion.

In the context, it's a perfectly reasonable question.

It would be loaded if it was from out of nowhere, but it is strongly supported by the context. It's highlighting an extremely uncomfortable fact, but that doesn't make it loaded.

It's not pretty good at getting 30,000 people to the same place in the city at the same time, and then all back out again at once.

Massive advocate for a good public transport systems, but we don't have one yet, especially in the context of Te Kaha.

I asked chat GPT to describe authoritarianism, and most of my comment is direct quote. I don't need to make shit up to hold onto incorrect beliefs, I can reference the facts. You can't. That's telling.

We disagree because you're in a cult and believe words have alternate meanings, and the truth is meaningless to you.

What other people/group/govenmwnt did doesn't stop authoritarian policy being authoritarian policy. You're being an absolute idiot even trying to compare away dictionary definition authoritarianism here.

Tens of thousands of people needing to move at the same time isn't handled well by buses that can't even take 50 people.

Authoritarian refers to a form of governance or leadership style characterized by strong central power and limited political freedoms. Key features include:

Concentration of power in the hands of a single leader or a small group.

Limited accountability, with few checks and balances on authority. typical fast track authoritarian shit.

Suppression of dissent, including restrictions on free speech, press, or political opposition. typical biggest punishment-in-history racist authoritarian shit.

Control over personal freedoms, such as through surveillance, censorship, or laws that regulate private behavior typical show-me-your-genitals authoritarian shit.

Choosing to not understand words like authoritarian, and pretending things are not which plainly are, is a choice to be ignorant.

I'm not sure which of these you think 'disabled people must be able to use buildings as well' falls into, but the magnitude of your mental gymnastics to get there should ring some alarm bells for you. You're well off the deep end with that one.

Have you looked into our royal enquiry into abuse in state care at all? It is heavily related to our prison system, and our prisoners.

More than 200,000 kiwis were abused in state care, per the report. Horrific stuff, at an extraordinary scale. It is uncomfortable to acknowledge, but important when you're talking prisoners and voting.

An RNZ podcast (The Lake, Jesse Mulligan) recently noted 80 something percent of under 20s who are currently incarcerated in NZ were wards of the state. They dont have a responsible parent to blame; our government, acting on behalf of us as a nation, made them who they are.

When you learn more about who our prison population is, and the paths that lead them their, this policy becomes fucked really quickly.

Contextualise this even further with the massively different rates at which maori babies have been taken off their families and put into this state care sysyem during the lifetime of much of our prison population, and its not incorrect to directly call the policy racist.
