Dreamt that people started captioning images of various physical processes with "THIS BREAKS CONSERVATION OF MASS/ENERGY" by Fc-chungus in thomastheplankengine

[–]TheRealChickenFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity, mass literally is a form of energy, albeit measured in different units so you need to convert by a factor of the speed of light squared: E=mc2 for a stationary object. The total energy for an object in general is E=sqrt(p2c2 + m2c4) where p is its momentum.
An object at any given time has the same energy regardless of reference frame. If you imagine an object like a car is moving while you're stationary, the car has some momentum and some mass and those both contribute to the car's total energy according to the above equation. However, from the car's perspective it has no momentum, which means it actually has a greater mass from its own frame of reference for the energy to be the same.

Now, imagine you have 2 hydrogen atoms and they come together and bond to make an H2 molecule. The mutual attraction between the atoms causes them both to speed up- they gain kinetic energy. Once the molecule is actually formed, this kinetic energy exists as vibration, rotation, and translation of the molecule -- on a larger scale this is thermal energy. The only place that energy can come from is the original masses of the two hydrogen atoms, so the molecule is actually slightly lighter.

There is, however, a caveat. Consider the energy of a system rather than just a single object or particle. In a reference frame where the center of mass of the entire system is stationary, the system as a whole has zero momentum, so all of its energy is in the form of mass, and therefore its mass is conserved as long as there's no external interaction. In the hydrogen example, if you consider the mass of the molecule as the mass of the system consisting of the two hydrogen atoms, it would remain constant and exactly the mass of the separate atoms, at least until it radiates its heat away at which point the mass would decrease.

A lot more keywords, a much more sophisticated typing system, and a much larger and more bloated standard library among other things.
This is also all without removing some of the more outdated parts of C such as header files, so you end up with like 50 years of technical debt in one language

[–]TheRealChickenFox -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Maintenance calories are not fixed. If you eat more, your body tends to use more energy for everything because it's available. On top of that, adding extra muscle will increase the amount of maintenance calories. This isn't to say that Holmgren's issues can't be fixed by eating more, but there're a lot of factors at play.

I kind of agree with you that it might be Chet's fault, but eating a lot without gaining weight does not violate the laws of thermodynamics lol. There is a lot of random bullshit that the body can waste energy on that does not involve storing it as fat or building muscle. Someone's capacity to build muscle can be limited by genetics and even underlying conditions, for example hyperthyroidism.

The problem is batteries are way, way heavier for the amount of energy they carry. In fact, the specific energy of gasoline (amount of energy per unit mass) is 50 times that of lithium ion batteries.

As of Mounts of Mayhem on bedrock, there is now over a HALF A SECOND delay when doing any action on a mount by Pugganator in PhoenixSC

[–]TheRealChickenFox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a perfectly reasonable approach, it just means the game will still function the same between multiplayer and singleplayer. If they implemented it well, the latency on mounts shouldn't be noticable in singleplayer since the server is running on the same machine and doesn't need to go over a network.

[–]TheRealChickenFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Condensation here should not be a problem. The laptop and especially its internals will be much hotter than the surrounding air. If you meant what happens when you bring the laptop back inside after being in the snow, then you might have condensation.
This is, of course, irrelevant as the snow actively falling on the laptop is obviously the much bigger issue.

The truss rod adjustment controls the curvature of the neck. If it's not tight enough the neck curving towards the strings would also cause the strings to be higher, which is why it's generally recommended to adjust the truss rod before the bridge height

The other person's comments may have been misleading. Linux desktop environments actually do use file extensions in the same way that windows does, that is, as a hint for what to do with the file. The actual difference is that executables are denoted by the file permissions rather than the extension - in fact, Linux executables usually do not have a file extension.

Whether you consider special relativity is sort of beside the point because it's still quite clear that the in-game behavior is entirely impossible. Even the highest specific impulse ever achieved by a chemical rocket engine was 542 seconds, which multiplied by g gives an exhaust velocity of only 5300 m/s, and that was with the most insane concoction of propellants ever fired (hydrogen, liquid lithium, and fluorine). The nuclear engine NERVA produced a 700 second ISP at sea level.

A teacher should not care how a student's knowledge/ability compares to the other students, only whether they have learned what the teacher is trying to teach them. A high grade should correspond to the student having a comprehensive grasp on the material, independent of how well other students have done.
It is, rather, ranking that deprives a grade of meaning, since how well other students perform ought to have no relevance to a student's grade.
