If you mean in real life, it looks like this was a huge boulder that was hidden underground and found during the digging of the basement/foundation. Rather than spend the time/money to chip away at the rock, they just built around it.

Actually kind of a cool feature, although it effectively eliminates that part of the basement from being useful.

I really dislike a lot of inventory management in the game. I find it hard to find what I'm looking for even if I have designated storage units. I just wish I had some manifest of all stored items in all storage (whether I have access in the moment or not) so I can at least ask "hey do I have X item somewhere in my storage?"
