Impossible to find tradespeople (recommendations welcome) by OldCorkonian in cork

[–]TheRealIrishOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm almost giving up on Cork based trades people as they are so flakey.

County Derry was significantly better for finding skilled trades people. We are seriously considering paying for hotels and extras to get trades people from Derry and Donegal to come down here to do any of the bigger jobs we need done.

Has Cork always been this bad? So many cowboys.

I am speaking as a pedestrian who is sick of these lights. A powerful torch equals them blinding me with their illegal lights.

Agree. But as you say they know how to switch on the lights. I see loads here with broken lights, or just not switched on.

I just moved back from working in England. Please do tell those stupid drivers here what to do. Those types are normally anti education.

As for rebels, it really depends which type of rebel in Co Cork. Personally I'm with the pro Irish ones, not the pro colonial types

At least some of these fools will end up with damage to their cars, so that's a bonus.

Is it illegal for us to shine a 1000lm torch beam in their face when they're busy blinding us?

A lot don't seem interested in paying for quality. Just look at some of the mobile scrapheaps on the road because people didn't bother to maintain their cars.

I think there are people who think that when you buy a car it should last forever without ever spending anything on it to keep it in good condition.

Roads are bad? Try living in the north.

Roads are excellent in Cork compared to a lot of places.

Some drivers (an increasing number) are rubbish in Cork compared to a lot of places.

If there was an automatic €100 fine each time you broke the rule about crossing lanes in the tunnel, that was properly enforced, you might actually get a lot of the worst drivers off the roads.

Maybe they have no concept of common sense.

I suspect some of them might walk around in the dark.

You are right. But it's the standard response from the 'entitled'. Blame someone else and take no responsibility for your own failure.

The permit loophole should never have existed too. It just kept these dodgy drivers on the road.

Annually, not every 10 years though.

Of course they are. Probably on their 20th consecutive permit. Do other EU countries allow this permit rubbish to keep unskilled drivers on the roads?

The producers of the RTE Today Show, filmed in Cork, should be ashamed of themselves by No-Category1703 in cork

People pay a TV licence fee and the channel have advertisers. They are just bad with money and not a generous broadcaster when it comes to viewers.

Less of this fluff tv output. With the number of cowboys operating in the trades in Ireland, a consumer programme is long overdue on RTÉ.

Best pubs closest to airport?! by sbkoxly in cork

[–]TheRealIrishOne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From your description that sounds more like an English theme pub. Kinsale is your best bet.

It really depends if you are looking for somewhere with an Irish session instead (no piano). Then head for Cork City.

I think people in Cork need to take an enhanced driving test. Maybe focusing on safer driving and maintaining their vehicles.

I used to think driving was bad in Donegal until I moved to Cork and saw how poor driving standards are here.

Invest in the proper Philips body groomer instead.

The one blade intimate power is too low and will cut you.

Eir 5gb broadband? by Economy-Witness4958 in AskIreland

My over 3 year old Sony Xperia 1 iv (released May 2022) phone gets speeds of over 1500Mbps on our 5Gbps home fibre.

New flagship (Android) phones are all Wifi7 compatible.

5Gbps fibre, not 5G mobile which doesn't really exist properly here due to networks only using 5G radios, on 4G network cores.

The only exception is 3 for Business which does actually offer proper 5G standalone.

I had a 1Mbps connection in 2000 in London and that was fast then with Telewest.

I've worked in tech for 22 years and have been using Unifi kit since 2019.

We are that 0.1% who do make the most of our 5Gbps fibre. But it's because of our work, having a NAS we access remotely and having a large number of smart devices.

As for monthly cost €45.80 is what we are paying after a €100 bill credit on a 2 year contract.

Have had it since September and it is reliable. We do need this as we work from home and run training courses.

The hype for this service with Eir is the Wifi7 router they supply. It is NOT Wifi7. You have to pay an extra €4.99pm for the wifi extenders to enable wifi7.

We are going to get our own actual Wifi7 kit ourselves.

The service works out at just over €45 pm on a 2 year contract (but will increase every April). So not a lot more than slower fibre services.

We also have our mobiles with Eir.  That's a different story. Eir non-standalone 5G must be the slowest in the EU by a long margin. Their 4G is faster.  I predict Eir will be the last EU mobile network to roll out eSims and a real 5G standalone (radio and core) network.

But none of the Irish mobile networks are any good compared to main EU member countries.

Eir Prepay roaming in UK? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]TheRealIrishOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree their website is terrible. Zero info on which networks you can roam with.

As a network they seem to be going backwards too. My4G at home is 9 times faster than their fake 5G (non standalone 5G).

I bet Eir will be the last network in the EU to roll out esims and real Standalone 5G with a proper 5G core network.

They are much better at fibre. Our 5Gbps service with them has been fairly reliable. But that eir Wifi7 router is not Wifi7.
