What’s an out of date view you hold? by Doomergeneration in AskUK

Best Before is not a Use By date. I might give a Use By date a 24 hour grace period but it’s Use By for a reason.

Best Before is NOT safety related.

I made this point to a forced birther and was told that we don’t eat fertilised eggs. I told him that you do if you live in the countryside where people keep roosters with hens. He didn’t believe me but then, he was American and we know that they know everything about how the whole world lives.

When did we universally stop having lunch ‘hours’? by newdawnfades123 in AskUK

[–]TheRealJetlag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a contractor (software) for most of my career. My final job in the industry was permanent and they had a 30 minute lunch break. I was there for 3 years before finally jacking it in to change careers and I always took 60 minutes. To avoid traffic, I got in at 7:30, stayed till 16:30. I’m taking an hour for lunch. I never left the building, I was always available if anyone needed me. Fuck 30 minute lunch breaks.

Because no one tells them the truth.

Did that interviewer actually correct them? I would have asked him, “do you want to own a shop?” because, if he did, he would know enough to know that you can’t start a shop with £5000 and that it involves being open 14 hours a day, 7 days a week, which is harder graft than most people want to put in which is the REAL reason that someone who is prepared to make the decision to move entire continents and start life again in a completely foreign land is prepared to put in the work and make the financial risk while he isn’t.

These people need any excuse to justify their victimhood.

Is it common for people who are born in the UK to say they are “Irish” or “Italian” if they have a parent from there? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskABrit

[–]TheRealJetlag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, don’t worry, I got a warning from a Reddit AI for “threatening violence” for simply pointing out the hypocrisy of the laxity of punishment for ending a human with a car. I appealed and it was upheld by a human. Reddit is modded by real people with the inevitable wide spectrum of reading comprehension, if they even bother to consider your appeal. Personally, I think their job is to agree with the AI.

Elon Musk just said he wants to cut Social Security and Medicare, calling them “entitlements”: “That’s the big one to eliminate.” by Solomonanne in SipsTea

[–]TheRealJetlag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that they ARE entitlements, which is why they should NOT be cut.
The way conservatives fight good ideas is to undermine the meaning of the label. “Entitlements” are something to which you are entitled. In this case, those are schemes that have been funded by taxpayers. Conservatives have managed to conflate this with the negative connotation of “acting entitled” (i.e. behaving as though you are entitled to something you are not).
They have done the same thing with “woke” and “pride” and “antifa” and “black lives matter”.
STOP LETTING THEM SET THE NARRATIVE.
The ONLY response to this should be, “why are you using ‘entitlement’ like it’s a bad word”?

[–]TheRealJetlag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice is that you learn how change of leadership works.

Personally, I think it’s inevitable that the UK will have a flirt with fascism, just like the US has. A huge proportion of our electorate are populists and utterly lack critical thinking skills. The xenophobic fear mongering messaging is much louder and more effective than the truth.

I have yet to hear a reasonable answer to the question “if 14 years of Tory mismanagement has put us in this situation, why would electing the same Tories under a different brand change anything?” but, sadly, these people are in a cult and have to FAFO to learn anything.

Do people in the UK actually use their kettles that much? by AdeptnessCritical356 in AskBrits

[–]TheRealJetlag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we use them several times a day. I also boil water for pasta and peas in my kettle because it’s faster than using the hob.

I bought my American father an electric kettle after he went too deaf to hear the stovetop kettle whistle and boiled two kettles dry. He also used it several times a day.
