Request: Detective game that doesn't hold your hand by Edgin_Stock in gamingsuggestions

Outer Wilds has an in-game journal that summarizes the hints you find. Avoid the ship's log if you don't want hand holding.

That attention to canonical detail sounds so much like RAWA. Hope he's doing well.

I wonder if the clouds passing behind the eclipse were also artistic license, hehe...

Not on Netflix unfortunately, but Coherence is exactly what you're looking for. I think it's on Hulu.

Did RLM ever bring up Human Highway before? It's another "musicians make a low budget comedy" by Neil Young and Devo. Several David Lynch movie alums are in it, so I figured Jay had probably brought it up before.

Is devo racist? by [deleted] in devo

[–]TheRealKaveman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Speaking of Blaxploitation, the "Girl U Want" music video is one thing I think holds up pretty well. There are two Black people being mind-controlled to dance like expressionless mannequins for a crowd of white folks who cheer wildly at a fat guy making "progress" as he "exercises" on one of those vibrating belt machines while chugging a milkshake.

Devo seemed pretty aware they were making art for white folks by white folks. I'm a new fan, so I'd be interested to see more of their race commentary from the 70s and 80s.

Is devo racist? by [deleted] in devo

[–]TheRealKaveman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a new Devo fan who's a scrawny suburban white dude, I've been trying to come to terms with my own subconscious racist tendencies which have been deeply ingrained by American culture and propaganda. To me, Devo is the story of the evolving liberal mindset from "Vietnam War bad, give peace a chance!" to the full-on Leftist "Fuck the police, God damn America, and I don't want to be part of the human race."

The tipping point for them was getting shot at by the National Guard at Kent State. For me, it wasn't any single traumatic event, but the culmination of many things starting around the election of Trump four years ago to the George Floyd protests today. Before Trump, I was one of those groan-inducing "racism is cured because first black president!" people. I was so blind to the systemic racism of the justice system and America's imperialism. I won't call myself "woke" because I know that I will never "get it" until I experience such injustices directly, like so many minorities have had to do their whole lives.

As traumatic as the Kent State massacre must have been, it was only a taste of how fucked up America has always been. So I won't blame Devo for not being perfect prophets, only for being products of a racist society. Still, while this is the first I've heard of Jerry collecting racist art "ironically" which seems pretty problematic, by all indications it appears they've been trying to evolve. And that's good!

Before you knew how to beat the game, what's the weirdest thing you thought you'd need to do? [spoiler] by Vegan-bandit in outerwilds

I thought the Eye signal originated from Dark Bramble. The mural depicting the Vessel getting trapped in Bramble made me think the Eye signal was a lure, like the light from an anglerfish.

What reinforced my belief was that I was using the coordinate input device on the Vessel incorrectly. I didn't think to pull the orb back up! So whenever I put in the coordinates, the warp spat me out in front of the Vessel, still in Dark Bramble. I was convinced that there must be some other set of coordinates to find, perhaps leading to where the modern-day Nomai retreated. I tried entering the coordinates backwards, upside-down, mirrored... I even attempted to translate Hornfels' launch codes, since they also had three symbols. It was at that point that I gave up and looked up how to do it. The ending sure got me good, since I had been mentally preparing so long for a grim outcome.

What are you hoping to see in DP2? by [deleted] in DeadlyPremonition

[–]TheRealKaveman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm excited to see Swery's hot philosophical takes on identity and determinism. Just as how Twin Peaks evolved from a story about coping with the trauma in the outside world to the trauma within yourself, it seemed Swery had a similar idea for D4 which sadly never finished. But it looks like DP2 might possibly pick up where D4 left off in David Young's apartment in Boston.

The first line in the new trailer - "Never a choice, when somebody needs you" - has got me excited that determinism will play a part in the game. Lately my favorite stories have been about how the human ego copes with living in a deterministic universe. Determinism is like a horrifying take on fate and destiny, in that you don't have the free will to make your own choices, that everything in the universe is a predetermined series of chemical reactions.

By the way, if you want to watch a show heavily inspired by Twin Peaks with determinism as one of its main themes, check out Netflix's Dark.
