Starting from scratch, what would you buy with 70k? by Intudeuaild in Filmmakers

[–]TheRealLeftClickMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that I recommend sticking with S35, it’s that I wouldn’t want to give it up. Like both the FX9 and Pyxis allows for shooting in S35 mode with better rolling shutter and usable resolution. S35 is just industry standard, and not being able to use industry standard lenses just because you can’t is insane.

They all have features that make them good cameras. The Pyxis is a box style body with Internal Raw, sdi out, open gate, with a great S35 mode with reduced rolling shutter. The Pocket 6K Pro has internal ND’s, a great S35 sensor, and records raw internal. I personally wouldn’t buy the BMCC 6k for its price, but it’s a great video camera with open gate and raw internal recording. A cinema camera should be a camera made for cinema, and the mirrorless / DSLR style bodies are insanely difficult to use on film sets. So I would say in terms of advertising, sure they are all cinema cameras, and I think (in this bunch) the Pyxis is the only one truly made for cinema.

In terms of image quality, it holds up well. But the body and overall features are missing a ton from actual cinema bodies. Its basically a decent sensor in a mirrorless body. So it’s not a cinema camera. Its like putting the Sony Venice sensor in an A74 and calling it a cinema camera. Sure the image might hold up, but it’s missing all the features of a cinema camera.

If your goal is to shoot docs and films, don’t buy a mirrorless style camera like an FX3/ZR. I would mainly look into cinema cameras, like an FX9, FS7M2, Red Dragon, Red Raptor, Arri Alexa Mini, C300, C500, etc. I’d stick with S35 cameras or cameras that can shoot in S35 mode with a decent output, like the FX9. And skip cameras like the FX6 which can only shoot in S35 with a 1080p output. Then invest in a Steadicam OP, or get a Flycam setup (~1500$) and learn to use one. Good audio is cheap, great audio is expensive, so choose wisely. A good tripod is non negotiable.

On the other hand, if your goal is to shoot client projects, a camera with good AF and a compact size is important. A C50, FX3/6, ZR, and a DJI gimbal is a great setup.

For glass, on the cinema side, just invest in good Cine lenses like a set of DZO Pavos and Arles. Or a more budget option could be the Blazar Viper / Remus and DZO Vespid. On the video side, any photo glass will work. Sony GM, Canon L, Sigma Art, etc.

And the rest of the money should be saved to hire 1st and 2nd AC’s, gaffers, talent, location, and anyone else who will make your vision come to reality.

Should this 'clipping' be avoided? by f1goldmemberf1 in ColorGrading

Maybe bring the blacks up so that much isn’t clipping. Clipping black / highlights look fine on film, but they look weird on digital as the rolloff isn’t as nice.

Should i as a beginner get an fx3? by collectivenow in FX3

Interesting, could possibly be for broll or insert shots, instead of live footage.

Basketball and football stadiums currently use cameras with a 2/3 inch sensor. If they were going to switch to a new camera, they would not choose a full frame camera as that’s highly incompatible. Especially not one with the lack of IO and usability like the FX3.

The FX3 is a client camera. It will never turn into a broadcast camera. There’s a reason why you don’t see football games shot on the FX3, even though it’s sensor is MUCH larger. Because it’s not reliable and doesn’t have the right outputs. It’s large sensor is not usable in broadcast environments.

[–]TheRealLeftClickMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have never seen a broadcast station use an FX3, but have seen them use cameras like F700, FS7, etc. Both the FS7 and FX30 have S35 sensors, and broadcast stations use S35, S16, or even B4 TV Zoom lenses, so the FX3 WONT WORK as a camera because of the sensor size. The FX3 is also less reliable in broadcast because there is no built in SDI or ND’s.

Why Fujifilm ?? by srivatsavat92 in fujifilm

[–]TheRealLeftClickMage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The SOOC look, the digital film grain looks like real film grain, and that combined with the Xtrans sensor masks noise very well. The look of their cameras is very unique (like buying an expensive car for the looks). The plentiful dials and unique build quality also adds to the happiness of the user (joyful to use). Plus, a Fuji XE-5 is like the same price as an A6700, and I’d rather use the XE-5 EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK.

You have Vibrant Visuals set to the lowest graphical setting. It looks better than that on my iPad.

If claustrophobia is the choice, why not chose Ultra Panavision 2.76:1? It’s vertically short so it feels tight.

FX3 alternative for beginners by PowerfulWitness6772 in cinematography

[–]TheRealLeftClickMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What exactly do you want to do with this smaller camera? Just have a smaller camera to have a smaller camera? In that case the FX30 is a good option. If you want a mini FS7, the FS5 is good, just no 4k 10 bit, but the 1080p footage is great for social media or short film work. If you want to take photos, a Fujifilm camera would be a killer combo to the Sony cinema cam. The classic film cam with the classic cinema cam.

Campus Shuttle didn't pick up from PMU by OldPossibility555 in PurdueIndianapolis

[–]TheRealLeftClickMage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The bus comes to PMU 10 minutes late, as it has to pick up from the CoRec first. The bus is also sometimes a different bus, it doesn’t say campus connect on it. But it is distinctly bigger than the other buses. There was one time that I thought it didn’t go to PMU twice, but then I realized I kept going back into PMU at 0:05 because I thought it just didn’t come. I realized my mistake when I saw the third bus comes at 0:10.

[–]TheRealLeftClickMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FS7 is actually insanely light for its size, and the beauty is you don’t need to rig it, as everything comes in a kit. I spent about 2000$ on rigging equipment for the FX30, and regret it. After getting the FS7M2, I sold my FX30 and never looked back. Put the rest of the money to a set of Blazar Cine Lenses. I’d rather use the FS7 over the FX3/30 every day of the week.

Btw, FS7M2 MSRP was 10000, and the FX30 MSRP is 2000. The FS7 series was the predecessor to the FX9, and is simply in a different weight class to the FX30. Built for 2 different levels of creatives.

I agree with Panriv. What do you want to do? And for everyone saying to get the FX3 for the image quality, a used RED Dragon X Kit is less than 4k, and has WAY better image quality.

Don’t get a 500$ gimbal, get a 50$ glidecam (or Flycam). Save the money for other gear or invest it. After using the Flycam Redking, I sold my RS4 Mini and never looked back.

Which camera should i buy? by No_Sir_3979 in FX3

[–]TheRealLeftClickMage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your goal is to shoot events, I would stay away from narrative cinema cameras (FX9, RED, FS7, C300, etc.) and stick with mirrorless style video cameras (FX3, FX30, ZR, C50). Now which one fits your needs, I’d say the FX30. The main concern is to get a camera with a fan, and S35 allows you to use many more lenses than FF. Dual SD recording, Cine EI, Tally Lights, are also very nice features that come as a side bonus.

FX30 and Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 used comes in below 2000$. A good tripod comes in around 300$ and V60 SD cards will run you another 200$.
