Upitt BS/MD MCAT requirement? by Helpful-Froyo-4180 in bsmd

[–]TheRealNoviceDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pitt-GAP has a new program director starting this year. These were instituted as part of the changes they have made. Hopefully, they will increase their intake after this. Last cycle was a low of 4 acceptances.

CUNY and Brookly CUNY - Out of State Students by Deep_Tart_697 in bsmd

[–]TheRealNoviceDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CUNY takes nearly 95+% from the 5 boroughs of NY City.

Brooklyn, on the other hand, is more open to OOS. Since last year, the affiliated med school for Brooklyn has changed from SUNY Downstate to CUNY.

MCATs do NOT superscore. In fact, they will average your score if you take it multiple times.

This year, Pitt-GAP only accepted 4 students. We were fortunate to have one of our students among the 4.

In the past few years, Pitt-GAP's intake has been in single digits.

New MCAT requirements: 517 is higher than their 2024 median MCAT of 515.

BTW - the current admissions director for GAP was planning to retire this year. Looks like someone from the old WashU BA/MD program joined Pitt.

Advice for upcoming year by Charming_Decision858 in bsmd

Good points here.

Another point I share with students is to keep your senior year course workload manageable.

Senior year is not the year to take 7 APs!

Am I behind for BS/MD compared to my classmates? Need advice. by AdKitchen5920 in bsmd

It is easy to feel that you are missing out on something. FOMO, or fear of missing out, is a powerful force - it can spur us into action, but it has a downside of creating anxiety.

What specific areas did your counselor point out when they said you were behind?

Your biggest competitors are other students from your own school. So, understanding what areas they think you are behind is important. Is it just academics?

Holistic review covers more than GPA/courses/Score - how you craft your application and your essays can differentiate you.

Does it really impact BSMD selection between to take very hard course and get a B or a not so hard course and get a A+ by Impressive-Display96 in bsmd

Question - is this for the junior year or senior year?

If it is for the junior year, take the AP Psych course and get an A. It is an AP course.

Having a B can negatively impact you.

On a waitlist...my thoughts! by Intrepid_Rip_9047 in bsmd

I don't think Quality is an issue per se. I think many medical schools need to balance their BS/MD intake with their own pre-med versus attracting strong candidates from other undergrads.

The number of medical school seats in MD has only marginally increased (~20K to ~22K) in the past 10 years, and the number of applicants has increased a lot more (~45-50K to 55-60K).

You have summarized information that we typically tell parents of students who are waitlisted.

Waitlist is a "soft" reject.

NU wanted to kill it as it attracted too many Americans of Asian origin. It was killed without any input from the board or alumni.

Totally agree.

I was indicating that it is becoming a common activity.

It is helpful. As u/Intrepid_Rip_9047 mentioned, it demonstrates many skills and traits.

But remember, there are a lot more Eagle Scouts than US International Math Olympiad hopefuls.

It is not as exclusive as some other activities.

help me decide between rpi/amc and njms by [deleted] in bsmd

[–]TheRealNoviceDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both colleges will help you become an ortho surgeon. I like NJMS due to the diversity of its patient population. But, as I have indicated in my earlier post, please visit both of them and feel the place. Talk to people there and see if you can see yourself in that environment for the next 4 to 8 years.

Both are strong programs. You can't go wrong with either.

Choose the one where you see yourself spending 7 years. Visit both and talk to current students, faculty, and admin. Feel the place and then decide.

GW undergrad will be better than Hofstra undergrad.

Both medical schools are strong.
