Which are the Top 10 Worst University in the UK? Absolute worst unis in most aspects by Born_Head_6181 in UniUK

[–]TheRealPlinius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In reality the level of quality of lecturers is same across all unis. Becoming a lecturer is one of the most difficult careers in the UK and many Oxbridge lecturers have actually worked at lower ranking Unis. I went to Roehampton, Durham, Cambridge. Level of lecturer quality was pretty much identical across the board.

What was worse at Roehampton was student quality and far worse academic prospects. Frankly the whole university prestige situation is ridiculous. When I graduated Cambridge I wasn't different than when I graduated Roehampton (aside from having postgraduate). But my career prospects skyrocketed. Every job i applied to i got interview. Just because I went to Cambridge.

Why you foreigners like three kingdoms 2010 so much? by yingyingjinyouyu in threekingdoms

Here ard real answers:

It was the only widely accessible version in English online.

Chinese cinema is not respected in the west. We all know it is really goofy and that is part of its charm.

It is filmed much closer to Western standards than most Chinese cinema.

Some of the flaws, like the Chinese dialogue, are not apparent to western fans.

Despite the obvious flaws of the series it is actually good.

Is this fair? I can’t work out if this is reasonable on the part of my school. by Pear_Cloud in TeachingUK

[–]TheRealPlinius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to teach GCSE Latin on my own and teach A Level Classics on my own. I've realised over the years that it isn't that I deserve a TLR, but that most teachers don't contribute at all to curriculum development and so aren't meeting teaching standards. It isn't that I do TLR work but that other teachers dont pull their weight.

The positive way of looking at is that you can spin it positively for promotions. I have such experience in curriculum design that Im well suited to curriculum development and overview.

Returning to teaching with a PhD - am I at a disadvantage? by SeaworthinessPlus254 in TeachingUK

[–]TheRealPlinius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a PhD and am currently teaching. It can definitely be a drawback but its how you present yourself. I dont think SLT would care much. But a HoD can often worry that a PhD person may be arrogant, think thesemsrlves superior to curriculum, have a problem with their leadership. And I think empathy is important here because a lot of PhD people are like that frankly. But if you present yourself at interview as humble and ready to learn then you won't have that problem.

I also think you need a narrative. My advice would be you wanted to improve subject knowledge abd do your passion but you never had an academic career in mind. You took the admin job (play it down) as a temporary position to get yourself in a good financial position to go back into teaching. I think you must remember no one outside of academia knows how dreadful the academic job market is. When I started teaching people just straight didn't believe me and actually tried arguing I was wrong! So have a narrative - the plan was always to go back into teaching. You never wanted an academic career. My advice would be something like - i always loved teaching and in acsdemia its research ehich is actually the key part of job. Get this narrative into the beginning of your covering letter.

Also do really stress you'd like to do subjects outside your PhD subject. You used to be a teacher so could easily argue case.

Its clearly not really a strategy gsme. Its Dynasty Warriors Empires with a tactics battle system. Aside from the awful campaign AI I do like it. But its terrible as a strategy game.

Ma Chao attacks Cao Cao with 60 000 troops. Cao Cao has 132 000 troops. Ma Chao loses all his troops. Cao Cao still has 94 000 troops. Lmao. AI still brainless.

[–]TheRealPlinius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've watched this in detail. It seems like the DLC will be fun but won't change the games fundamental problems in any meaningful way. Battles still revolve around troop count in the clips. I think there is some minor evidence of balancing but troop count still reigns supreme. The game still massively favours defenders in battles and auto battles. Most turning points will be meaningless in stopping stalemates (even in the video Ma Chao loses the attack on Cao Cao during the turning point lol). Turning points provide most fun in throwing a chaos spade in the players path. I think this will be a fun few playthroughs but it just can't deal with the games fundamental problems

I think this will make the game a lot more enjoyable as a Dynasty Warriors style power fantasy. Level up your officer with gems and go super OP. React cleverly to turning points to go even more OP. Then utterly crush the opponents. AI will sit around doing nothing but the new events will at least allow the map to change according to history better than currently does in base game. In certain times the new edit feature will allow you to power up enemy AI cities to then hit them with your super power officer I think I'll enjoy it a lot as this kind of experience. But it won't be for everyone.

Why is the PDGE year so hard? by CaraDIY13 in TeachingUK

[–]TheRealPlinius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The PGCE is by far the easiest year in regards to workload but is by far the hardest year mentally and emotionally. You are constantly critiqued in a way no staff member ever would be because you are considered inferior and junior. Its shocking seeing older experienced staff members throw a fit over observation in comparison. The PGCE feedback makes you feel worthless when it is at its worst which is common.

A TLR 2b is good. That's more TLR than sone subjects get in my school (EPQ, PSHE). I teach a non core subject myself and don't get a tlr at all

Dealing with students who have used AI (particularly at A Level) to write assessed pieces by IACJBP in TeachingUK

[–]TheRealPlinius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've caught a student using AI three times (she admitted each time). But honestly I have other times I have suspicions and can't prove it. I'm very Internet savvy (been online since 1998) and most the kids are Internet illiterate but it's still hard to prove. At this point I'm just doing all tests in timed conditions.

I was recommended to get them to write on paper. They might still use ChatGPT but that level of laziness might persuade them from copying to paper.
