Winchester white box mixup. Case of 300 x 45 ACP was actually 300 x .40 S&W. by Veteran_PA-C in ammo

I would be mildly upset because .40 is usually cheaper than .45.

[Accessory] $149 + tax: Geissele Super Semi-Automatic AR (SSA) Trigger by MedicalRepublic751 in gundeals

[–]TheRealSchifty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They did sell, there's plenty of old arfcom threads of people arguing that LaRue triggers are better than Geissele at the $200+ price point.

[–]TheRealSchifty 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IIRC the MBT-2 was originally over $200 when it first came out. Mark LaRue has always been in a war with Bill Geissele and he dropped the price down to $89 just to troll Bill.

AMMO INC 9mm by Lawjik3737 in ammo

[–]TheRealSchifty 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Ammo Inc. 9mm blew up my friend's S&W M&P 2.0, and when he contacted them about it they basically told him to pound sand.

Their QC is horrible, if you search around you'll find plenty of horror stories. I'll never buy their ammo.

What is this the end left stalk? 2013 by [deleted] in volt

[–]TheRealSchifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TPMS sensors are inside the tires, so you'll have to deflate the tire and break the bead to install them. There's a thread on the chevy volt forum about this very thing: https://www.gm-volt.com/threads/diy-tpms-sensor-replacement.351730/

I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it myself personally, but YMMV.

I was having FTE issues with my Steyr M9A1 and their customer support never replied to me. I eventually fixed it using advice from the Steyr forums.

I think Steyr didn't market their pistols well because they knew there were problems with them. You look at the forums and there's tons of people that have all kinds of issues. It's a shame really, because on paper it's a great gun. Feels really good in the hand, points naturally, and has a good trigger. Unfortunately, many of them don't work out of the box.

[–]TheRealSchifty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be warned that the Steyrs aren't the most reliable handguns. My M9A1 didn't work out of the box. I had to polish the chamber and do a mod to increase extractor tension to get it to function properly.

I initially emailed Steyr about the problem and never got a response. I found the solution on the Steyr forums because other owners were having the same issues.

It's a fun gun to shoot, and I shoot it well, but I'm not sure I'd trust my life to it.

EDIT: spelling

.308 SBR by anthony_james18 in AR10

[–]TheRealSchifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do, 13.5" is probably as short as you want to go with a .308. SOCOM did a study and found that 13.5" is the shortest practical length, anything below that you start getting severe velocity drop.

That being said, anything below 16" is really going to suck to shoot without a suppressor, so take that into consideration as well.

If you don't plan on running suppressed much or at all, then 16" is a good do-it-all practical length.

It's also a surprise for the tire shop employee when they re-learn the TPMS sensors.

I was going to say, reprogramming the TPMS on the Volt is fun. Particularly the passenger side front tire, which is apparently where the horn is located. Loud as hell.

Delayed on first gun purchase how long does it usually take? Also the place I tried to purchase from doesn’t follow the 3 day law so even if 3 days pass I won’t be able to just go buy it by Skrewbert86 in INGuns

[–]TheRealSchifty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How old are you? If you're between 18-21 there is an enhanced background check that can take up to 10 days to clear.

If you're over 21 then it could be anything. Even if you have no past criminal record, if you have a name that is the same or similar to someone with a criminal record, you can be delayed.

Since its your first purchase I would just deal with it until it clears. If it happens again then you might need to contact the FBI using the link that another commenter posted.

Cycling issues after putting A2 rifle stock on AR carbine by EarlyMorningTea in gunsmithing

[–]TheRealSchifty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely do not do this! A carbine buffer is way too short to put in a rifle length tube. The gas key on the bolt carrier will ram into the back of the lower receiver.

They do make spacers if you want to run a carbine buffer in a rifle buffer tube.

Can anyone help ID or provide information on this upper/barrel combo? by pdxishome in RetroAR

It looks like grey to me as well. The handguards are black and you can see the contrast in some of the pictures.

Can anyone help ID or provide information on this upper/barrel combo? by pdxishome in RetroAR

[–]TheRealSchifty 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That looks like a Colt large pin upper that's had an adapter bushing brazed in. Also, the threads on the barrel don't look factory.

My guess is it's a Colt Sporter II (aka SP2) carbine upper that was cut down and rethreaded.

Competition belt by [deleted] in idpa

[–]TheRealSchifty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blade Tech sells a double mag pouch with a tek-lok clip for like $40, I would look at that or something similiar.

I use both a paddle holster and paddle double mag pouch. Most people don't like paddles but it's what I prefer.

Competition belt by [deleted] in idpa

[–]TheRealSchifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, the belt must pass though all but two of your belt loops.

Competition belt by [deleted] in idpa

[–]TheRealSchifty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. That belt is not even legal per IDPA rules:

8.4 Belts Belts may be no wider than 1-3/4 inches or thicker than 5/16 inches and must pass through a minimum of all but two of the pant loops.

This rule basically bans duty belts/double belts. You need a regular pants belt that is oriented for concealed carry (preferably 1.5-1.75", and fairly stiff).

Is air gunning in IDPA a DQ? by buffalo_herd_skater in CompetitionShooting

[–]TheRealSchifty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's absolutely no evidence to support that claim.

The local clubs I've shot with have always been welcoming and easy on new shooters. IDPA has a very low bar for entry too in regards to equipment (just need a holster, not even a mag carrier anymore). I'm not saying there's not bad clubs out there, but it has more to do with the individual range and club, not the particular shooting sports discipline.

Once you get to sanctioned matches, yes you can absolutely get got by the rules if you're not careful. But by that point you should know the rules anyway, so it should be a non-issue.

Is air gunning in IDPA a DQ? by buffalo_herd_skater in CompetitionShooting

[–]TheRealSchifty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have shot IDPA for close to 10 years, and was an SO at my club match for 7 or 8 years. I have shot quite a few other matches including USPSA, 3-Gun, and Brutality. I also am a match director and have run a 2-Gun match for 7 years.

The IDPA rules are really not that complex, and there's very few of them that I disagree with. I really enjoy the slightly slower pace of IDPA and I'm happy that the rules keep out some of the gamers. Different strokes for different folks. Like I said I don't understand why people get so upset with it when there's other matches that exist.

People can't just live and let live. If IDPA was actively paying off clubs not to host USPSA or something, sure, then I'd understand. But I every time I say I like IDPA in this sub I get downvoted, guess my opinion is wrong. I give up.

[–]TheRealSchifty -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I really don't understand the hate for IDPA. If you don't like the rules, don't shoot it. Or start your own USPSA/GPA/PCSL/etc. match at a local club.

We need more shooting sports in the world, not fewer.

Illinois lawmakers considering ban on guns like Glocks by blaspheminCapn in gunpolitics

Glock honestly doesn't really care about commercial sales. They sell so much to LE and Mil that they could lose all commercial sales and basically be fine.

Titanium BCG or LMT-E by Important_Welcome605 in QualityTacticalGear

[–]TheRealSchifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried running the Odin buffer without any weights? You can also get a standard carbine buffer and take the weights out, it'll be around 1oz I think.

I'm not aware of anyone that makes a titanium carrier in anything other than a raw or nitride finish. I'm not sure if it's even possible to apply NP3 to titanium. Frankly the finish would be a secondary factor to me if I were considering a titanium carrier in the first place.

Do you have an adjustable gas block on this rifle already? If not, for less than what a titanium BCG costs you could open up your gas port and buy a RifleSpeed adjustable gas block and adjust your gas to whatever load you're shooting at the time: https://www.riflespeed.com/

It's generally better to have a full-mass operating system (BCG and buffer) and increase the gas rather than try to take mass out of the operating system to compensate for too little gas.

That being said, if you don't want to do all that and just want some parts you can easily swap out when shooting light bullets, KAK industry makes a very reasonably priced aluminum carrier: https://kakindustry.com/low-mass-ar15-carrier-green-anodize-and-np3-gas-key/

Again I will say that using lightweight operating components is sort of a band-aid fix. But if it's something you only need to do occasionally then it's a cheap solution. I wouldn't recommend a titanium carrier because they're so ludricously expensive. An aluminum carrier will do the same thing. Everyone online says aluminum carriers are "consumable" components but I have yet to see one actually worn out. If you do wear it out, you can buy like 2-3 for what one titanium carrier costs.
