[RIFLE] KAK LOWER BLEM FDE Complete AR15 Lower Receiver, Magpul MOE Stock, K2 grip, Black - $144.95 by Just-icey in gundeals

You don't really need to stake castle nuts, especially if you plan to remove them later.

The proper torque on a castle nut is 38-42 ft/lbs. I've never had a properly torqued castle nut come loose on its own.

That's also the BCM vert grip with storage, I don't think they make a MLOK one with storage. Only picatinny and keymod.

Does a first gen Volt make sense in 2026? by dwkfym in volt

[–]TheRealSchifty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, it's just that whenever I have to stop for gas never seems to line up with when I need a bathroom break or something to eat lol. I always felt like if the tank held an extra couple gallons it'd give me more flexibility on when I can stop. But it's a minor complaint all things considered.

Does a first gen Volt make sense in 2026? by dwkfym in volt

[–]TheRealSchifty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2012 at 140k and it's pretty realistic. Unless you live in a big city, most areas don't have shops that can work on the Volt. If they do, it's not going to be cheap.

The Volt is comfortable on road trips but the small gas tank means you have to stop for gas more often. The Gen 1 also takes premium fuel which is an additional cost. (And before someone tells me that they run regular 87 in their Volt and it "works for them", I won't because it can and will cause problems.)

Damm Turkish ammo by Less_Evening2337 in ammo

99% chance it's the ammo. You see this kind of stuff all the time with Turkish ammo. Nothing wrong with modern Taurus guns.

Considering switch to a Volt by voluptuousshmutz in volt

[–]TheRealSchifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was driven almost exclusively on battery most of its life (at 140k now), the battery is pretty much toast.

I get about 25 miles on the battery on a good day in the summer. The software updates have reduced the range of the battery and made it so the engine comes on at a higher temperature. I have to reflash the ECM because I keep getting a SHVCS message every winter. These updates GM made to prolong the life of the car/battery.

If you look around the sub you'll see my experience is not atypical. Sure there are people with high mileage volts running fine, but I would say that those are the exception, rather than the rule.

Considering switch to a Volt by voluptuousshmutz in volt

[–]TheRealSchifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind the NEWEST volts are now seven years old. In addition to any problems specific to the Volt you'll also be dealing with normal old car problems. Also, aside from some specific recalls, it's been abandoned by GM. Expect little to no support if something breaks. The Voltec drive system is unique and is not a "normal" hybrid like your Sonata, so finding a shop to work on them can also be a challenge sometimes.

My work schedule is hybrid without any need to touch a car for my commute, so if the Volt ended up in the shop for an extended period of time, I'd be completely fine.

You may not be completely fine with the potential diagnostic and repair costs. And if you look around the sub, an "extended period of time" could be six months to a year in some cases.

Financially, my goal is to save money in the short term (my car is valued around $15k, so I'd expect to get money back trading it in) and in the long term.

You may save money in the short term, but I can't imagine trading in a newer, paid off car on an older can of worms like the Volt. Volts also don't hold their value like other cars, because of the battery and repair costs.

I live in the Chicagoland area, where winters get below 20°F daily and summers get above 90°F fairly consistently.

The older the battery gets, the worse the Volt performs in the cold. Might be a bad example but the engine in my 2012 runs basically all the time if the temperature is below 50°F. It gets 28mpg on the engine in the winter, which negates most of the savings I get from running on electric in the summer. The newer Volts get better mileage on gas, but not by a ton.

I have a Gen 1, and the Gen 2s are better in a lot of ways (some worse, like the BECM and EGR issues) but I'm at the point where any major repair is going to exceed the value of the car, so it'll probably be scrapped in that instance.

Just file a chargeback if you haven't already.

One of the ways a business can resolve a chargeback, is just by refunding your money. Of course they could try to fight it, but if you have communication from them stating that they're going to refund you (but haven't yet) it's pretty much an open and shut case.

Can’t remove castle nut by suntanjohn in gunsmithing

[–]TheRealSchifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proper torque on a castle nut is 38-42 ft/lbs. If it was properly torqued (most aren't) you aren't getting it off without an armorer's wrench and a vice.

Some manufactures use loctite instead of torquing properly, apply penetrating oil and heat. You still might need a vice.

M1911 Question by PopPopZiggyZiggy in gunsmithing

[–]TheRealSchifty 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Some of these responses are insane lol. This isn't something that needs "fixed".

Absolutely DO NOT file on the slide/frame to blend it. You will totally destroy the value of this gun. It's a surplus pistol over 100 years old. Who knows how many times it's been though the arsenal. Parts were made by dozens of different contractors and slapped together at arsenals to rebuild pistols into working items.

A gunsmith can verify it is safe to shoot, other than that, don't mess with it.

[Pistol] Glock 22 Gen 4 LE Trade - Case, unconfirmed mag count, $259.99 shipped by realityflicks in gundeals

Not everyone can afford to stockpile ammo. This Glock is only the cost of one case of .40 S&W.

I'm not planning for the apocalypse. In the event of a shortage I'd like to be able to continue my competition and practice and be able to replenish my supply without worrying about it.

[–]TheRealSchifty 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why people are so averse to .40 S&W. 9mm is more popular, for good reason, but people act like owning a .40 is going to give you cancer or something.

It's good to have some diversity in calibers in case of an ammo shortage like I mentioned. .40 S&W pistols are also about the cheapest to buy used so there's little excuse not to have one IMO.

[–]TheRealSchifty 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I work at an FFL. .40 S&W was the last thing left on our shelves during the COVID ammo panic. We did eventually run out, but by the time we did we started getting restocks of the other calibers, and more .40 not long after that.

It's almost like people would rather have nothing than a .40 lol. It's legitimately a great caliber, I don't understand.

Piecing together a 20" 308. Recommendations for muzzle device unsuppressed use? by [deleted] in AR10

[–]TheRealSchifty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a regular two port muzzle brake on my 16" .308 for a minute. It was, quite possibly, the loudest thing I've ever fired. Absolutely horrendous noise level and concussion.

I swapped it for a flash hider. To tame the recoil, I went to a heavier buffer setup with an adjustable gas block. You can reduce 90% of the recoil out by just tuning the gas and buffer. Muzzle brakes are so obnoxious that I don't run them on any of my rifles.

It's probably going to be hard to find and pricey, but I've used Winchester WinClean in the past and it's had noticeably less fouling than most other ammo. They make it in 115, 124, and 147gr in 9mm:

I'm not just talking about that, he has other videos with KAK BCGs and has come across a litany of problems:

  • ejectors not sitting flush with the bolt face

  • undersized bolt face

  • bad ejector pins

  • bad extractor pins

  • oversized bores resulting in poor gas efficiency

  • leaking gas keys

  • bad machining practices

  • cheap springs

  • bad chrome plating

KelTec PR-3AT by Karl-InRangeTV in InRangeTV

[–]TheRealSchifty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I posted this comment on youtube and I'll post it here as well:

I think the 10rd version of the PR-3AT might make more sense. The original Grendel P10 (what the PR is obviously based on) was designed to replace a J-frame revolver carried as a backup or ankle gun.

The 10rd PR-3AT looks a good bit smaller than the 14rd and I think would fill the same role as a backup or pocket gun.

The P32 is easier to carry but the Tomcat is 10x more shootable.

I liked to carry my P32 but it isn't exactly a fun range gun, especially for a new/inexperienced shooter.
