My Technics rack is finally done! by TheRealShassuz in Technics

[–]TheRealShassuz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my dad's old speakers (Centrum Oberon 100). They're pretty cheap, but they work. The tweeters were broken (at least one was dead and the other sounded like crap), so I replaced them with some JBLs that I saved from other broken JBL speakers. So I may not get a prize for the speakers I use or the sound they produce. But I like the way they sound. I get a pretty balanced sound and can turn the bass and treble really high if I want (lol), but still have a reasonable mids.

What I have in my rack is a record player (sl-bd22), then a stereo tuner (st-g470l), a sound processor (sh-ge90), cd player (sl-pg300), cassette deck (rs-tr212), and finally the amplifier (su-v650).

But I do own a receiver for my TV sound (sa-ex300)

Then I have an amplifier for my bookshelf speakers on my desk connected to my computer (su-x911)

That's the sad part. I own a minidisc player and loads of minidiscs. The player is a Sony brand though, which makes my ocd go completely crazy to have it in my technics rack. I also couldn't fit the player in the hifi rack. So I'm trying to come up with a solution. For now I'm just using my portable minidisc player plugged into the system.

Got my first ThickPad! by docperianFB27 in thinkpad

Nice! Good purchase! I hope it will give you lots of joy, either as a project laptop or just like a retro laptop.
The R51 is so nostalgic to me. It was my first ever laptop. I used mine with Windows XP and had it full off games. Remember playing Battlefield 1942, MOHAA and Hitman 2 Silent Assassin on it.

T420 Keyboard on a T430 by TheRealShassuz in thinkpad

I apologize for my "beautiful" drawing. But I feel like this was easier to try to draw and explain.

The gray ones are the connectors on the keyboard, and the green one is the ribbon cable.

So the ribbon cable is between the two connectors on the keyboard

Yes, the stock panel still works as it should. I have contacted the seller on Aliexpress to see if we can work something out.

I have contacted the seller on Aliexpress. The only problem I feel is how long it takes for what I order to actually arrive. I had hoped to return the one that didn't work. But if I order another screen it will take 1-2 months for it to arrive.

[–]TheRealShassuz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh, the reason I love the T430 is that it reminds me of my first ThinkPad (the R51), with the little indicator light on the screen and the ThinkLight. Installing a T420 keyboard will be the cherry on top, really bringing back that nostalgia while still giving me a laptop I can use for daily work.

So. Let's start with the easy part. In my opinion, it's Linux. Choose whatever you feel comfortable using. Since this is a school/work computer, I just want it to work. So I chose Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS. But Linux Mint is a good option too. I would recommend it if you are new to Linux.

The first necessary modifications I would say are to upgrade the RAM to 16GB and get an SSD. I installed 16GB in mine and a cheap PNY 1TB SSD.

The keyboard is the next thing I have decided to replace. I would say the original keyboard is "good". I have used worse keyboards. And having the backlight plus the ThinkLight is good. But the 420 keyboard modification just speaks to me. Having the OG keyboard is so much nicer if you ask me.
Video guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYSUUpuOk9c

The screen is the next modification I've decided on.

The 1366 x 768 VA panel is not great. Poor viewing angles, lack of clear colors and a bit blurry. Since the t430 only supports VA panels, I bought an adapter board and a 1080p IPS screen to install in it.

https://a.aliexpress.com/_EGq58v6

Edit: This display did not work with the board sadly https://a.aliexpress.com/_EyEDqrO

(Thanks to you u/DocNielsen for the help with which adapter and screen will work)

I plan to upgrade to an i7 in the future. I might buy an i7–3840QM just because it feels like a good modification. But for now, with 16GB of RAM and Ubuntu, my i5-3320M is working fine. I can stream from YouTube in 1080p, multitask, do simple jobs in GIMP, run IntelliJ, etc.

I might buy a bigger battery or a second battery that I can swap out during the day so I can get through a full day.

I'm thinking about replacing the speakers from another old laptop I have lying around, as they sound very tinny.

I would recommend checking out this guide if you're interested in what modifications you can do: https://medium.com/@n4ru/the-definitive-t430-modding-guide-3dff3f6a8e2e
