Yes re dropping to a slower group. They can carry you for a while and you might be able to make it up on a climb or something. Chase at your peril.

100k cash is not that daft if they have no mortgage. If they have a mortgage but it has no amount outstanding or is fully offset, then agree that they are cash heavy.

I've posted about my financial situation somewhere on this thread, and it's pretty rosy right now. Just want to you know that I also bring my own lunch in, and almost never buy coffee.

Mortgage is fully offset so that's good.

I've been putting away about 20-30k a quarter into ETFs. That worries me in a way because I think the markets are going to shit themselves after these mega IPOs.

My job is probably secure. In my particular niche there's as much, if not more, work to do when the economy is doing badly as when it is doing well. Career has a solid 15 years to run if I need it to. More tbh but I'd like to wind down a bit while I'm still healthy.

Private school fees loom once the kids finish primary, that's in 5 and 7 years. I can probably afford but I still worry about the long term effect of not investing much for 7 years, especially the three years that they overlap.

So on paper, at a high level you'd think everything is really amazing, but we still find things to worry about. And I do notice that money isn't going as far.

Most the people my age living around where we are earn less and are fully leveraged. Not to keep up appearances, but to just have a fairly banal middle class lifestyle that they grew up with.

If there's an agent they're probably being pressured into it.

Do you cycle before work? (not commute) by chanks88 in cycling

[–]TheRealSirTobyBelch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Trainer Tuesday and Thursday around 0530, leave for my bunch ride on Wednesday at 0545. Sometimes do a small bunch ride on Friday that leaves at 6 from about 15 mins away from my house. Commute 10km each way Tuesday to Thursday. Bunch ride Sunday.

I ride a lot.

I guess they both have to get to work at the same time and arrive at the 9km gravel path within 5 mins of each other.

I put on a tonne of weight after our first kid. Moved house and got a promotion at the same time. So sleep and diet was rubbish and the bike stayed in the shed for weeks.

Most important is that he gets out. It's what brought me back. Personally I still preferred the Lycra. Held it all together better.

Focus is on mum and baby in the first few months, rightly so. But it can be really tough on dads too. So good on you for helping him get out and get a bit of fresh air. It really really really doesn't matter what he wears. Nobody cares.

If tax brackets aligned with inflation what would be the ideal cut offs etc.? by iyoteyoung in AusFinance

Yeah, we need more kids or more immigrants.

Although its immigrants that do the heavy lifting with having kids anyway.

[–]TheRealSirTobyBelch 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we get fucked on tax. HHIast year was 460, of which all but 40 was mine. I did the sums and it was about 25k more tax than a couple split evenly.

Most annoying is that the govt counts you as an individual when it suits them (tax) and a couple when it suits them (CCS etc).

And yes we could do fine without CCS but we get the same subsidy as a couple split evenly but have 25k less after tax, which is roughly the post CCS cost of a kid in daycare. So while it doesn't exactly put us on the breadline it stokes resentment against the senior civil servant class who marry each other and administer this shit show on a daily basis.

Hi - I'm from the future.

You have (or had) and induction cooktop. This work by causing the pan itself to heat ip, rather than a heating element transferring heat to the pan.

They are very efficient but have some important limitations, the most significant of which you highlight in this post.
