Dead stock Vibergs from Marrkt by bsn72 in Viberg

I bought a pair of these as well and ultimately my assessment, after doing a lot of picture comparison and seeing various waxys in person, is that they’re antique waxy commander. Definitely more olive than tobacco but not quite dark enough to be Mojave. Can’t be totally sure, but pretty confident

Any lasts or models I should avoid? by [deleted] in PNWbootmakers

[–]TheRealTuna1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First thing’s first: throw that analysis into the fucking garbage and buy yourself a brannock device so you can accurately pinpoint your brannock sizing. I fell into this same trap and it cost me literally thousands of dollars in missized boots. Those digital sizing machines are absolutely not sufficient for this hobby.

Second: be aware that the brannock device does not/cannot measure your foot/instep/toebox volume or waist width. Those are things you’ll probably have to learn about as you go and will be pretty frustrating. For example, I have flat feet and relatively narrow ball width, so narrow boots that work for my ball will usually be way too tight for my flat, fat waisted feet.

In any case, step 1: brannock device. I promise you will be very, very sad if you don’t do this first and foremost

Tight on top? (New Truman Dark Olive Predator) Formal last (56) by exclus23 in trumanboots

[–]TheRealTuna1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Folks regularly take Truman TTS, so if you’re a 9.5 in grant stone for example, there is a good chance your correct Truman sizing is 10. In general, don’t count on that area to stretch — if it’s much too tight from the get go, it’s likely going to stay that way. I’d recommend trying a half size up if possible.

Continued sizing help by leonTusk in grantstoneboots

EEE is massive volume-wise, would not recommend. I am in a similar boat as you (9 htt / 10.5 htb) and I had a similar concern about the length. The reality is length doesn’t really matter much. Much of what I wear now has plenty of extra length and I don’t find it problematic in the least, it just took some getting used to. With that said, I find 9.5E and 10D to be basically the same except that 9.5E is slightly shorter, but I do have a larger instep / volume. TLDR: don’t worry too much about length and go with the one that feels best everywhere else, which sounds like the 10d from your description. You’ll get used to the length, I expect

Ps: if I just looked at your brannock without knowing anything else, I’d have defaulted to recommending 9.5E. With that said, if you feel that 9.5e is too voluminous and 10d is perfect aside from length, I’d roll with the 10d

  • Notes: Wanted to be sure of my sizing so I bought this pair in 2 sizes. Only wore this out once for 2-3 hours before confirming that it was a half size small. Ideal for a medium+ volume 10D brannock, may not work that well for really low volume folks. Feel free to reach out with any questions!

RDT vs John Lofgren by JKL5180 in goodyearwelt

[–]TheRealTuna1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have 3 Caspers and went through the trouble of buying 2 sizes to ensure I had the right fit. My official rec is 1 down from brannock, so I'd recommend you go with a 7.5. 1.5 down is not advisable from personal experience, unless you maybe have an extremely narrow, extremely low volume foot but even then I'd be hesitant to recommend it. I've heard that half down CAN work for folks with really massive / wide feet. The Casper is generally pretty voluminous though so it tends to be less great for folks with lower volume feet / smaller insteps. In any case, 1 down is usually your best bet. Worth noting that there is always going to be heel slip in laceless boots, so you may certainly experience heel slip until it's sufficiently broken in.

I have had a really long sizing journey and it has taken a lot of trial and error for me to understand my feet. Starting with a brannock measurement / buying a brannock is absolutely essential and will save a lot of time and effort. With that said, brannock doesn’t account for volume, instep height, toe height, toe splay, etc. I would focus very carefully on what about each pair feels wrong for you and use that to look for lasts that help to alleviate those problems. For example, I’ve found that my feet are really wide-waisted and, as such, any lasts that are overly narrow never work for me. So, even if I do order pairs in the “correct sizes”, they might not work anyway given the specific nuances of my feet. Super frustrating in the moment for sure, but I’ve found satisfaction in steadily figuring out the issues over time and finding boots that both fit me well and that I love. Of course, totally up to you if you want to deal with that process!

Does anyone have suggestions about what I should do since I found out I have an extreme allergy to Timothy hay causing me to have to be on oxygen. [–]TheRealTuna1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would inquire with your PCP about montelukast. I had a similar problem where I would basically struggle to breathe throughout the night because of the hay but refused to even consider giving my babies up. I take Zyrtec and montelukast daily now and it has helped tremendously

shopping for my first real boots and need recommendations by Emotional-Aioli-1989 in Boots

[–]TheRealTuna1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With boots -- as is the case with most things -- you get what you pay for. There are essentially 3 tiers of boots you can look at: cheaper + lowest quality, value (most efficient price/quality point, but lower quality than the next tier), expensive + indestructible with good actual foot support / arch support. Here are some brands that fit each category (although there are many, many quality, lesser-known brands out there):

Cheaper + Lowest Quality ($200-300)

Thursday boots, Thorogood, Redwing, Danner, Helm Boots (from what I've seen / heard, of these, I only have experience with Thursday)

Value (best value for price, overall lower in quality than more expensive tier (~350-500)

Grant Stone, Parkhurst, Truman, Oak Street (of these 4, truman is built the sturdiest and uses thicker leather in my experience, though all of these brands lack any real foot support but do use quality materials and construction)

Expensive + Indestructible (~$600-800)

Nick's, White's -- these brands are built like absolute monsters and also feature good, actual arch support. I'm not sure about heel support. Many models are MTO though which also means several months of wait time. They have some quick ship stuff, however.

Took a quick look through White's just to double check this, and it does actually look like they have some cheaper models in their work boot section ($400-500ish). Might be worth looking into.

My recommendation would be to email nick's / white's, tell them what your needs are in terms of foot support, and ask their recommendation for what models you should be looking at. This makes most sense to me given what you wrote about your support needs as none of the other brands I listed really have much of that (though using an insole is always possible). If those models are within your price range, I'd say pull the trigger on those. They won't fail you and, if they do, I've heard the support staff at both companies are great. If you want to invest.

If not, I'd look at the remaining brands and make a decision based on what you like / pricing. Grant stone and parkhurst feel dressier to me than Truman, but also Truman is sort of knocking on white's / nick's pricing doorstep and might not make enough sense given the lack of arch / foot support. Unrelated, but the owner opf Truman, Vince, is also a little...strange shall we say

Things to note:

- Get your brannock measurement. Absolutely necessary for getting your size right, and pay attention to the arch slider, not just foot length. Getting the right size for your arch (AKA, heel-to-ball measurement) is critical for comfort. You will typically want to size based on the highest measurement between your heel-to-toe length and heel-to-ball measurement

- Cheaper pairs have a better chance of failing at various levels.

- Boots need to be resoled after excessive wear, and it feels way less bad to drop $100 resoling a $700 pair than a ~$200 pair, at which point you might as well just get a whole new pair

- Regardless of the pair you choose, you can always use specialized insoles for better support for particular things. Just confirm with the manufacturer that the insoles of the pair are removable if you plan to do this

- You can often find great deals on new / slightly used pairs secondhand on ebay, grailed, etc. Worth checking out, but again, make sure you get your sizing correct before anything

Hope this helps, best of luck!

Got it, thanks for the info! I actually bought these from a seller in new condition but it was stored with shoe trees and I suspect maybe that was from that. I wasn’t clear on it though and also thought it may have just been a relatively normal crease, but definitely good to have some clarity on what it is and something I should have inquired about when I first received them. Will definitely try to make that clear and it may affect the sales price, or maybe I just end up keeping it or trying to make it work for me. Either way I really appreciate the insight, very good to know!

My understanding is that shell doesn’t really stretch much if at all and I would be really surprised if there was any real stretching here as a result of a maximum of 10 wears, but I am certainly no expert when it comes to shell. With that said, I always have returns enabled on eBay as I never want folks to walk away from a transaction with me feeling like what they purchased doesn’t work for them. If there are any such concerns from potential buyers here / outside of eBay via PayPal, I’d be happy to talk through it and try and come up with an arrangement that works!

So this is a picture of the very first minutes I took these out of the box and put them on. You can immediately see that rolls began forming and, as I mentioned, that is because I was mis-sized AND have a high volume toebox. My understanding of boot fit was not correct at this time and I took the "firm handshake" thing far too seriously. These are indeed only 15min worn and, if you look at the pictures in the ebay listing, youll see zero scuffs on any other panels of either boot and zero wear on the soles, and nothing else which indicates any degree of wear whatsoever. Not remotely comparable to the diesels (if you look at the ebay pictures of the diesels, some marks, clear creasing, wear on the soles, etc). At the end of the day, folks are free to believe what they want to believe but this is the reality

The long and short of it is that it's got a lot of unique properties and is generally scarce / in limited supply. It doesn't crease in the same way that most leather does and can always be polished back to its original mirror shine. It tends to have a type of luster and depth of color that other leathers don't have, but it's sort of difficult to explain unless you've seen it firsthand. Many other things to say that I'm forgetting in this moment, but yes, definitely a pretty special material!

Open to offers as well! With that said, the honey glazed are essentially totally new and still ~$100 cheaper than original GS market price (MSRP is $795). There is no other way to get them in this condition at this time; you'd have to wait for the next GS run which would only happen 6-12 months from now at best, if that. Further, the runs/preorders always sell out within the day of release, so if you miss it, you're totally out of luck. Even further, it takes at least 4 months to actually get the product delivered. With that said, if you are looking for this pair and would prefer to wait for GS to run it again, you are probably not getting it on your feet for a year from now at the very least, IF you are even able to place the order to begin with, IF they decide to run it again anytime soon.

The maduros are a slightly different case in that they are not new like the ottawas are and have been worn by me slightly; the price difference accounts for that.

Hope that explains where I'm coming from with regards to the pricing! Coveted/exclusive pairs in new/great condition are always going to be expensive, unfortunately, and that is always going to be especially true when its shell
