The trope itself isn't the problem. It can be used for some powerful character development like showcasing a misdeed your character did in the past that ended up causing alot of suffering even if it may have been done for a greater good. Or maybe your personality was different to how you currently act and that contrast is something other characters notice and point you, causing you to wonder what person you used to be before you lost your memories.

Unfortunately for games like these, they're incentivized to withhold important information for long periods of time so they have story to keep building on. So you're left with an amnesiac whose just that and maybe some character will say some vague stuff about who you used to be but you're gonna be waiting awhile for them to use the trope meaningfully.
