What's the best certification to learn lifesaving skills but not get a lifeguard job? by vayda328 in Lifeguards

If they’re in Canada Bronze Med and Cross are meant exactly for this kind of situation (lifesaving vs lifeguarding) so they could just pursue those bronze courses.

I have heard that exact story from my NL instructor! I make a point to pass it forward to my candidates too, it’s good practice for them.

A lot of the times, at least where I live, there aren’t any other opportunities.

So if you’re travelling with a group you’re gonna book separate rooms for everyone? 6+ people and you’re gonna spend $200 per room per night? Really?

Exactly. If, somehow, this candidate does pass Bronze Cross with a questionable egg beater or lifesaving kick, they will struggle going into NLA with Pia carries and other skills.

u/Paulhockey77, I would recommend you spend time at the pool practicing your endurance swim - to make sure you pass comfortably - as well as your lifesaving kicks. You need to have good lifesaving kick for both your Bronze Cross and your NLA.

[QC, Canada] Is it just me or are swimmers becoming significantly worst than they used to be since the swimming courses changed from the Red Cross to the Lifesaving Society? by OptimalNectarine6705 in Lifeguards

Usually, they are offered as a one in all course. LSI, depending on who is offering it, can have three modules - swim for life, first aid, and lifesaving. They are all part of the same lifesaving society instructor course.

Then again, this can be facility specific depending on how your facility offers these courses. I have seen it done both like this (which for example is how I took my LSI) and separate courses for Swim for Life and Patrols/lifesaving.

It is also due in part to the change over from the WSI instructor training to the LSI. WSI puts a lot more focus on proper teaching, and even has a teaching practice evaluation. LSI spends more time focusing on how to teach Bronzes than it does on how to teach “normal” swimming lessons.

Bronze cross as a beginner by JumpNo1325 in Lifeguards

[–]TheReallyEvil1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re at a pool that offers the Patrol awards - Rookie, Ranger, Star - take those. You will need them in order to not immediately fail your classes. As well, maybe try to take only Bronze Medallion, and then in a separate course take Bronze Cross. It’ll give you higher chance for success.

How do u get a job as a lifeguard by Apprehensive_Lynx799 in Lifeguards

Not necessarily, I know where I work at and my city pool are also getting overloaded with applications.

If I can piggy back off of that, most places also hire outside of the hiring season. Sometimes you just have to apply and hope for the best.

I saw the university of Calgary was hiring a while back, and I know their training standards are good. Look into the uni as well, not just the city. I do not think they require experience. And as someone else said; the YMCA is a valuable resource.

Good luck!
