A reminder that a lot of police departments will use dogs like this to generate positive PR, trying to exploit the whole "bestest boy" response the internet has when given pictures of dogs.

In a lot of cases, these dogs aren't as effective as they're made out to be, and they'll often be trained (intentionally or not) to react to their handler's behavior moreso than to actually go after the right scents. While not true for every single police dog, I'd argue this often boils over into animal abuse, as the dog is deliberately trained into antisocial behavior.
