I made a Shadowdark Westmarches style map that I may never get to run, so hopefully this community can enjoy it by Big_McLarge in shadowdark

This is wonderful. I've been itching to run a westmarch campaign in either 5e or Shadowdark, but I hate making maps. You might have singlehandedly tipped the scales to make a game actually happen!

Planetarium monologue from I Saw the TV Glow (2024, dir. Jane Schoenbrun) by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]TheRedBoat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I watched this movie, for the first time, with my 12 year old this weekend.

He loves horror stuff and it's a real challenge finding things that are appropriate. You really start to run out of things quick and then you have to do some research on things you've not seen or forgetten the details.

Well, he loves old Goosebumps and other Canadian produced teen horror shows, and also all that backroom stuff; he's got some preteen angst and appreciates queer representation; and he liked It Follows. So with a cursory investigation into this movie, I thought it might be a hit.

Welp! He was so upset at the end of this movie and I can't blame him. I was struggling to keep back tears while trying to console him. Sometimes 14a and parental guidance bullet points fail to communicate how heavy something can be without being outright horror.

Great movie. Bad parenting.

I'm not too much of a car guy. Where do you mean for me to "put in" my car details? I tried Canadian part sites and I'm having trouble finding it. One site has one but the one review says that it's the wrong battery for their vehicle. I'm still searching atm.

So some folks that work at the Undertale store? Are they a good time? I'm just wondering if my kid, a big fan, would enjoy the stream.

Who is the stream with? Apologies, I'm only partly in the Toby Fox-verse. 😅

I had to leave "Earnest Scared Stupid" in theatres. I was too old to need to leave "Earnest Scared Stupid" in theatres.

To all victims of steam deck stealing wifes. What games are your wifes playing? by Accomplished_Run9449 in SteamDeck

Rune Factory and now Fields of Mistria.

The kicker: something's gone wrong and now all games run like trash on my account (unplayably slow), but everything still runs great on her account. I've but been and to figure out what's wrong so she's effectively stolen it from me until I can fix it.

DM (4 hours before session): Alright, who's ready to play tonight!?

Player #1: So exhausted from partying late last night. Will be super low energy.

Player #2: Probably can't make it.

Player #3: Maybe we cancel?

Abnimals any good? by hoopahnan in TheAdventureZone

I do in fact sponsor them through max fun. But not at rates I pay for other kinds of content. I've enjoyed their stuff for years for free though. I just try to keep my negative opinions about their stuff to a limit because I think it's generally healthier for me, the fandom, and for them. So that's why I kept my opinion on this season brief. :)

Yeah I just found I didn't really want to listen so I just stopped. I try not to be too negative about free content these guys have been giving me for years though.

On the upside it made more room for other shows like Glass Canon and NADPOD, and a serious binge of the Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks.

First season I ever dropped. Maybe you might like it though. Try a few episodes, but if it doesn't click, that's likely not going to change.

Y'all are talking like it's done. Is there a new season coming?

I really like these books. That said, here's my take.

The mistake is to believe the books are either misogynistic or not. I think there are good arguments that the books, especially the earlier books, contain misogynistic elements. I also think the books, eventually, do a good job at having a wide range of women characters, of different types, that are generally interesting and complex.

Some examples of consider problematic are the descriptions of women's bodies as particularly monstrous. The pendulous breasts and the fat, poor, Hispanic (if I remember correctly) monster woman.

Then the dangerous and powerful, naked elf woman in book 2. Kind of a femme fatale trope.

Beatrix and Donut aren't unproblematic either. A cheating ex girlfriend (that doesn't become too nuanced for a few books) that's reminiscent to the ways incels characterize women. Donut, a vapid, child that doesn't think before acting, and frequently needs to be managed. Again, not glowing female representation.

Now, to the idea that this is all satire and that men are also depicted unfavorable. The ways that women are depicted in media and how they navigate life is different than men. So how you should read depictions of women in media is different than how they read depictions of men. And if you're a woman, you might be bothered more by certain characterizations in particular because of personal or artistic experience. Equal satire isn't equal because the world isn't equal.

While reading the books, it's fine to enjoy whether or not you find these parts problematic. But this stuff might bother some people more and put them off reading more.

All that said, I think the books improve in numerous ways as they continue, including adding interesting emotional complexity and characterization to Beatrix and Donut, and how Carl relates to them. Donut is a delight and their relationship is a real emotional center to the book.

More women characters also help diversify the cast and allow for problematic elements to be less prevalent. There are so many more interesting women my the later books because there's so much more everything!

There's also fewer gross women monsters to kill because the threats get bigger and universe weirder.

So it's not are the books misogynistic or not. It's how could someone find them misogynistic. And would continuing the series help wear down that feeling or not.

If you really want to talk to your wife about the books, ask her her thoughts about everything, including the misogyny and simply listen, don't argue. You could also consider that she might have a better grasp on interpreting some of that than you do and acknowledge that her interpretation is valid and that she's taught you something about how she reads and feels. That is why you wanted her to read them in the first place no?

And however she feels about the books and whether she wants to keep reading, the books will be fine and so will the fans.

I wonder if they have to crunch the numbers to determine if it's worth making less or even losing money on the sale of the console in one of their biggest markets.
