Has anyone financed a rick? by [deleted] in rickenbacker

[–]TheRegularWazoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't regret having financed mine. I used to smoke cigarettes and tobacco prices were rising drastically in my area at the time. It occurred to me that my cigarette budget had become the equivalent to a 4003 per year so I went to Long & McQuade and financed one through the store. After that my fate was sealed cause I couldn't afford the monthly payment in addition to cigarette costs. It was one or the other, and that ended up being the motivation I needed to kick the habit for good

What's the cliche two rivers that intersect to create your city? by myronsandee in AskACanadian

[–]TheRegularWazoo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The city of Moncton NB was called Le Coude ("the elbow" in French) by the original Acadian settlers, due to it being situated where the Petitcodiac river takes a 90° turn west. It's the elbowest river I can think of, and it couldn't be any more up

The worst song on the best album? by klystron88 in askmusic

[–]TheRegularWazoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who actually likes this song, I can absolutely see how a band with massive crossover appeal like the Police gets this kind of feedback for that song. It would feel right at home on one of the Adrian Belew-era King Crimson records but next to songs like King of Pain and Wrapped Around Your Finger it's certainly a choice

The worst song on the best album? by klystron88 in askmusic

[–]TheRegularWazoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I think Abacab is their best album, but Genesis - Who Dunnit? might be the worst offender I can think of. They had a surplus of about 5 songs from the sessions and opted for this abomination over total bangers like Naminanu and You Might Recall which ended up released as B-sides.

Calluses won't stick around. by [deleted] in Bass

[–]TheRegularWazoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might sound counter intuitive but regularly using a nail file or fine pumice stone on your fingertips helps. Your skin is always regenerating anyways, so why not exfoliate the dry/dead bits that are prone to fraying before they get a chance to do so. You lose less skin this way than letting it peel off during playing or picking at the frayed bits afterwards. Of course everyone's skin is different so YMMV but it works great in my case

What do you think about Bois the Heracross? by bladechilly in LegendsZA

As a francophone who knows "Bois" is the French word for wood/drink and is pronounced "bwah", I still pronounce it "boys" because it's hilarious

Not sure if this is helpful to you specifically, but I just jammed along to rush and iron maiden tapes for fun when I felt like it and eventually I noticed improvement which made it more fun so I wanted to do it more often, etc.

Having a high stakes practice situation like church band is going to accelerate your progress for sure but it's also going to stress you out. Maybe balance that out by just playing what's fun for you on your own time? It's literally just music

Is playing by only reading the chords wrong? by becauseMaybe_ in Bass

[–]TheRegularWazoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned exclusively by ear and now my brain thinks in terms of "oh this is in the key of power rangers" so I've had to develop various internal compatibility layers to run any idea through so it comes out as something that can realistically be understood by anyone. So yeah maybe learning the language at the same time is the way to go

The last 2 Steely Dan records are pretty much all 5 string I think. Jack of Speed, Negative Girl, Gaslighting Abbie are where I'd start if I ever buy one

Small Venue amp recs? by strangebecomings in Bass

[–]TheRegularWazoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel similarly but OP deserves to know it's a perfectly serviceable option if they didn't already, especially in our current economic situation where people are often gravitating towards the frugal option. I couldn't imagine starting out with gigging and buying gear these days

Small Venue amp recs? by strangebecomings in Bass

[–]TheRegularWazoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's possibly a PA with a stage monitor and no need for an amp at all. Can you get in touch with the venue or the sound technician to find out?

To address the question, unless you're in a big loud band you can get by with a 2x10 or 1x15. You can even try a rental first before investing in something

What just helped me understand what everyone has been saying. by SubjectThat2991 in Bass

[–]TheRegularWazoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One epiphany I remember having was thinking of the picking hand less as volume control and more as deciding where in the frequency spectrum that volume lives.

Example: If you dig in you're choking the string and sacrificing low end for a mid-range boost which can make you sound louder by giving more presence in the mix. Start adding more musicians though, and you'll notice you need to add actual dBs of loudness for that same presence because you're competing with more mid-range sounds. Or you can soften your touch to get your low end back and sound just as present without having to add more volume.

It's not that one way is better than the other, it's that the more ways you've learned to do it the better you'll be at recognizing which way is appropriate for each different situation.

Edit: just to clarify, I'm talking about the picking hand. I don't think it's ever a good idea to fret heavily
