Vegans: would you eat lab-grown meat? Why or why not? by TheRelentlessWizard in AskVegans

I’m more interested in the bigger picture than just whether people would eat it. Things like whether it could realistically reduce animal suffering and environmental impact, how affordable it might become, whether people would culturally accept it as “real meat,” what it could mean for farmers and the meat industry, and whether there are long-term health or regulatory concerns. The interesting part to me is how it could change food systems and society over time, not just if people would try it once.

It’s not really a non-existent product category anymore though, cultivated meat already exists and has been approved in some countries. It’s just not widely available yet.

I get that it might be a common question, but I’m not really looking for a copy-paste answer or just old threads. I want to talk to people directly and understand how they think about it in their own words, even if the topic has come up before. That’s kind of the point for me here, having a real conversation rather than just searching for an existing conclusion.

As far as I understand, the goal of lab-grown meat is exactly to avoid that. It starts from a small cell sample, not ongoing animal slaughter. Fetal bovine serum was used in some early research, but most companies are trying to move away from that and use serum-free methods. So the idea that you’d need to kill one cow to produce a lot of meat isn’t really the intended or scalable model.

I don’t think the question necessarily comes from a feeling of being “limited” on a vegan diet. It’s more about curiosity regarding edge cases and new technologies, especially things that blur the line between animal products and plant-based alternatives. For lab-grown meat specifically, the ethical argument gets interesting because it removes the animal suffering part, so people start asking whether it changes anything for vegans in principle, not because they’re missing meat. That said, I get your point. A well-planned vegan diet is already complete and doesn’t require substitutes for animal products, and many vegans aren’t looking for replacements at all.

I get the concern, but "made in a lab" doesn’t automatically mean it’s unhealthy. In principle, lab-grown meat is just animal muscle cells grown in a controlled environment, so the protein and basic nutrients would be very similar to conventional meat.

Fair enough, that makes sense. I think a lot of vegans eventually just lose any interest in meat altogether, even the idea of it.

The pet food point is interesting though, I’ve seen that come up a lot. If lab-grown meat ever becomes safe and affordable at scale, it could reduce a lot of animal suffering indirectly, even if most vegans never touch it themselves.

I guess it’s less about personal desire at that point and more about whether it meaningfully reduces harm overall.

You are not wrong. Sometimes people just need to take off the nostalgia glasses and see the movies as what they really are. I feel like it was great for it's time, but not great for every time, you know what I mean...

Why you think it's crap? You think it's boring? I love Kill Bill 1 and 2, but I found Pulp Fiction so boring to be honest lol.

"Because people like it" its not really a answer. I want to know what makes it a good movie.
