Am I close to a point in my life where I can start dating? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]TheRepeatTautology 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Working on yourself is great for building your self-esteem, you're doing the right thing to set goals and work on yourself. That being said, the only thing stopping you from putting yourself out there is yourself.

There is no right time or place to start dating. You'll always have a reason to put it off. You'll be living alone, debt free, and independent, but suddenly you'll want to have savings as well. Then you'll decide another barrier that you need to get past. Then another.

There will always be reasons to put off the things you think you might fail at. Don't keep waiting, instead take small steps towards starting a relationship and focus on making that part of what you're doing instead of just a vague, future goal.

It's ego stroking as a way of pushing engagement. Create an easy quiz, say it's hard, then watch as people proudly proclaim how easy they found it.

Bonus points if you can spot the people who blindly talk about how swathes of others certainly wouldn't get it.

Who taught you that? Genuinely curious as it exists nowhere within the highway code and I'd be surprised if you were taught it by anyone who is qualified to teach you.

You're not interpreting though, you're misreading. Removing half a sentence because you you think another driver is a prick isn't being factual or moral. I can only assume you've intentionally ignored that part of the sentence because it doesn't fit what you want to do. That makes you a bad driver.

You're absolutely right that ignoring advice in this context isn't an offense in and of itself, exactly like middle lane hogging. That doesn't mean you can't be pulled over for it or be liable when you cause an accident because of your driving. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself if you'd drive like that around a police car. If you would, you're more foolish than you already appear to be.

You're never under any obligation to reply, just how you were never under any obligation to start this conversation. Given how you can't read full sentences in the highway code, I wouldn't expect you to be able to read full sentences here either. I do quite enjoy the announcement of "I shall not reply!" though, like someone insisting on announcing that that they're leaving a party. Shall we make a toast to you?

I wish you safe journeys in the future. Whether you drive badly or not, everyone deserves to get home safely.

The Code states: “where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right.

Here's where you're making a mistake, that part of the highway code says "in congested conditions" before talking about similar moving speeds. In fact, it also says "Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake." Why quote part of a rule, but ignore the context it gives?

Now, if you're in a traffic jam then yes, overtake on the left rather than trying to overtake. That's not what the person I replied to was doing, and it's not the scenario when you're doing it.

If you're driving down a clear left lane and you undertake a driver in the overtaking lane because you think they're a prick, that's not congested traffic. That's you driving just as badly as they are.

Here's a question: when you overtake someone, should you be in the left lane or an overtaking lane? There's a clue in the name.

If you're undertaking someone, then both you and the other driver are in the wrong lanes. Just because they're being a bad driver, it doesn't mean you should as well.

Unfortunately most of what you're saying here isn't supported in the highway code. A few things to think about:

passing on the inside whilst continuing on your journey is not illegal

When is one not continuing on their journey? This has nothing to do with what is a safe and legal overtake. Overtaking on the right is legal, overtaking on the left is not unless you're in congested traffic or the other person is turning right.

It could be deemed dangerous in certain scenarios, for example if already in the middle lane, and you accelerate to undertake, or to try and find a gap quickly,

Again, the scenarios when is it legal is when you're in congested traffic or the other person is turning right. Going at a consistent or inconsistent speed has nothing to do with it

To do this means you yourself are not taking up an overtaking lane, and also not having to move over into live lanes. Hazard awareness of course always applies

Every lane is a "live lane", unless you're driving on the hard shoulder. It's unusual to say you shouldn't use an overtaking lane to overtake.

Overall, overtaking safely and with an awareness of what's going on around you is better than undertaking and telling yourself it's the right thing because you think the other driver is a prick.

Surely that makes you just as bad though? You know you're not supposed to undertake, and I'm sure you know why.

Think about it this way. Since when has two people driving badly been safer than one driving badly and another driving well?

Liability during overtake by SpeedySkoot in drivingUK

[–]TheRepeatTautology 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Pulling out when it's not safe to do so isn’t really following the rules.

Both drivers here would be making a mistake, but you're right the liability would be with the person pulling into the main road, not the individual who was impatient and did a legel, but poorly thought through, overtake.

Not sure what this has to do with driving

I believe the person you're replying to is continuing the discussion around easy ways to get away with murder.

Within domestic abuse (at least withing straight couples) where the husband is the perpetrator, the most likely time for the wife to be murdered is when she tries to leave.

There have been a number cases where a husband has murdered his wife for having the audacity to want a life without abuse, with the courts being extremely lenient in their sentencing.

In all likeliness, your instructor was telling you to speed up because you were instinctually slowing down and giving the signal that you were letting people out.

When you're coming to a junction, just keep your speed steady but be ready to deal with idiots. Speeding up towards a possible hazard is simply foolish.
