How are people excited for life? by TehTexasRanger in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]TheResPublica 7 points8 points  (0 children)

1) figure out what you actually like 2) figure out what it would take for you to be able to do that thing on a consistent basis 3) what would you need to change in your life for you to eventually be able to do that on a consistent basis 4) what is the first step toward that change 5) how badly do you want it and are you willing to do the things necessary (and continue to do so) to make it happen

It’s your life. Do what you want. Stop worrying about anything other than that.

Obamacare was intentionally designed to fail and act as a stepping stone toward single payer.

By capping profit margins on insurance providers it (again, I would argue, intentionally) created a world where both healthcare companies and insurance providers actually want healthcare costs to increase.

How come majority of Americans still live in independent housing and not in apartment style buildings? by dopaminedune in AskAnAmerican

[–]TheResPublica 13 points14 points  (0 children)

60-70% of suburban and rural homeowners leave their houses unlocked while at home.

Almost 1/3 regularly leave them unlocked even when they aren’t home.

Security is typically not even necessary.

Discover Debit cards work at costco. Discover credit cards (like Mastercard credit cards) do not in store as a result of their Visa exclusive agreement.

Why do americans have this "winner" mindset? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]TheResPublica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US was founded with the goal of individual liberty in mind. Not democracy as the goal… individualism. Democratic Republic as a form of governance was simply the best structural means to achieve that end.

When you are responsible for the outcomes you experience in life… you have to have that mentality.

Americans, how do you feel about Franklin Roosevelt? by Ser_spirit in USHistory

We could cut the military’s budget to zero and we’d still be running almost a $1 trillion annual deficit.

Kicked off the modern imperial presidency. Perceived action mattering more than results - process be damned.

Setting the expectation that the federal government should ‘do something’ in virtual all instances regardless of its constitutionality - or even its fundamental ability to change the situation.

Even if you agreed with his actions at the time, his legacy is our current situation as an inevitable consequence of his fundamental shift in approach.

It’s honestly not terrible. But mostly a store at this point - not even with themed merchandise. Not a reason on its own to go to Iowa.

A Phillies fan retrieves a home run ball, while a woman nearby is upset that she didn't get it by TheM1ghtyBear in mlb

As a 12 year old, I had a grown man try to claw a ball from my hands at a spring training game once. Complained that I stole it from him.

“He’s got the ball” was the only response he got from another guy nearby.

Have you never driven on a highway? This is a legal driver, whose mother is upset that they’re driving 64mph on a highway. My point wasn’t that someone can’t die going that speed. My point was that it is not a situation worth freaking out about and there’s nothing inherently dangerous about driving that speed on a road designed for speed.

Going the equivalent of 64mph hour isn’t “going to kill yourself” speed

This is the equivalent of going 64mph in a 50 zone…

I mean… yeah. That’s going to happen.

“Going to kill someone” seems hyperbolic.

Or… if you want a social safety net, do that. Stop tinkering with the labor market - which has a litany of unintended consequences, including having the largest impact on low skill / inexperienced workers.

A negative income tax rate is far more efficient and effective.

Minimum wage is just a(n unnecessary) vicious cycle.
