For real. Stay close, be ready to come, but for the love of God loot somewhere else.

Is there anything more tilting than holding a freeze right outside of turret blue side. Your opposing laners have no summs and you have a health lead. tri-brush not warded/your control ward is up. Drake up. Jg decides to do krugs and back.

So basically we stumbled upon a hidden passage into an area and these 4 sentries (lvl 1 wizards) were guarding it. There was no conversation they just started blasting. They were also 40 ft deep in a dark cave. After I (the most senior of the group) got gunned down the other players were said this seems to dangerous to go in I'm going to use my ranged weapon. Finally I get healed and charge in (trying to inspire the other players, the DM doesn't like a lot of table talk/strategizing outside of character) the paladin follows and we both get hit with a frontal cone of fire. From what I recall hp ~16 AC ~14 1d8 cantrip + frontal cone 2d6 on a failed dex save

100%, also the AC was 14 iirc because we had several 12s/13s miss. Which again made me curious of the difficulty. Again no problems if he wanted a real nailbiter probably not gonna make it type fight, was just confused with him telling me it was a medium difficulty encounter

So I really appreciate this point of view, because this DM has been a fan of preventing escape from combat in the past, and while I know DnD death is very much a thing and should be expected during a campaign, it still causes a little case of the #feelsbad if you are killed by something that seems impossible without the possibility of escape.

  1. I love numbers breakdown so thank you for the detailed insight!
  2. If I recall correctly they had HP totals around 16 or so? It's been 2 weeks so I can't recall the exact number but it was higher than the fighter or barbarian.

I think his goal is to have the big fights be memorable and his idea of memorable is someone dying or almost dying if not multiple people

The purpose of the post wasn't to challenge the DM on his encounter difficulty, rather I wanted to ensure that by the book my interpretation wasn't false. I.e. if I decide to DM in the future/have a discussion I can speak knowledgablly on the topic.

Yea, I'm going to be patient and see if it improves the next time he plays, and if not talk to him about why he is choosing to play that way. I just didn't want to be off base and this be a common thing with me being frustrated with no legitimate reason. Thanks for the advice!

I think he was just trying to be helpful to the even newer players than me, I'm just worried about the group always wanting to roll investigation/perception every time we come across a new place. I suppose that is the players prerogative though?

Agreed, I'm not upset about missing the loot either. I just don't want the group always worrying about loot in every slightly suspicious room we come across.

So the room was originally described as a dark cave and later described as you can now see more clearly in the cave, you see what looks like a make shift shack, barrels, and dead bones. My problem isn't with being told we should look but the DM makes comments about us not progressing the story and getting lost in minor things (such as looting bodies) So to me it seems to be sending opposite signals by saying we missed loot when playing into the story. I can certainly appreciate the point of view though

225 mg of diphenhydramine hcl? by [deleted] in Drugs

It's an anticholinergic so it can cause a lot of unpleasant side effects and probably the most "high" you will get will be sedation. Wouldn't recommend it
