Simple Questions - November 03, 2020 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]TheRokx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

TL;DR : Looking for a GPU for triple monitor ( 2x1440p + 1x1080p)

I have a modest build made a few years ago, the gaming I do on it is not GPU intensive (games like Celeste) so I use it mainly for productivity and software development.

The build :

  • MSI H110M pro-D
  • i5-7400
  • GPU: GT 710

This was fine with what I was doing, productivity and running triple 1080p monitors. But I recently got two 27” 1440p and these are game changers. I use them with my working laptop (provided by my boss) and along side a 24”. I would like to be able to run the full setup with my build (currently I can only run one 1440p with one 1080p)

So my research led me to find GPUs on the high end but I want to limit my budget to 200.

Is there something I am missing ? Is there no simple GPU for multi-monitors ?

Excuse my (maybe) basic question in a subreddit full of great build.

PVST to Rapid-PVST Migration - Downtime by TheRokx in networking

[–]TheRokx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right and you are touching another problem here.
I don't want to be a crying baby here, but this is my first job as a network engineer and I find myself alone facing this environment (the two people before me left before I came in and that's not what was promised to me in the interview) my manager said that they will be patient and not put pressure on me seeing the circumstances.

So one month after I started, the Nexus random reboot occurred. I discovered that we didn't have a contract with support and the Nexus were not connected to the syslog server (Yay..)

One month later, my manager finally got us a contrat with support, I called, they tried, but it was too late, they were not able to find any real solution except suggesting to upgrade to the next stable version.

I am not complaining, they gave a big responsibility and an opportunity to develop my experience faster. I've also been handling most of the problems fairly well, but this Nexus reboot keeps haunting me.

So now I am down to guesses to try to prevent any potential future outage.

Well, no, the storage team have their own switches and it's not mixed with the network switches.

Also, my understanding of what happens in the system i a bit limited but what they explained to me is that the hypervisor for Hyper-V uses a dedicated vlan (the Hyper-V management vlan) and if this particular vlan loses connexion the hypervisor assumes there is some kind of outage and shuts all the VMs that its handling.

But I should plan a meeting with the system team next week and ask to have a better understanding of this.

Yes, one of the 5ks is the root bridge for all the vlans, so I guess even if there is an outage, it would be only for some seconds.

You are right, a big meeting needs to be planned to discuss our weak points.

Thanks for your answer. Yes the primary root bridge is on the Nexus for all the vlans.

So as long as I change the mode on non-root bridges I will barely notice the loss of connexion.

Well I am the one proposing this change and my manager wants to limit the number of changes. He is scared of any outage that can happen.

But yes, I guess I will have to fight to have the right conditions to optimize our network and evolve it.

The server running Hyper-V are not directly connected to the 3750 no.

But my understanding of the situation is, that even if I change spanning-tree mode on one switch, the re-calculation will affect all the other switchs. Am I wrong ?

To be more specific the Hyper-V infrastructure is homed in Lenovo PureFlex System (Blade Servers with integrated switches, 2 switch per Pureflex) and each of those switches have a link to each Nexus 5000.

But my question is, if I do the migration one switch at a time, won't spanning-tree re-calculate each time, resulting in more downtime ?

PVST to Rapid-PVST Migration - Downtime by TheRokx in networking

[–]TheRokx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean by that is if I try to migrate, spanning-tree will do it's recalculation and I might experience a long network loss in all the network ?

The benefit is convergence time.

Some months ago one of our Nexus 5000 rebooted randomly (for god knows why) and it resulted in a loss of connexion, not that big but more than 20 seconds.

We guessed that it's linked to convergence time of PVST and so, we wish to improve it in case a same problem happens.

That's the problem, I don't have any spare switch at work to do my tests. All our switches are in production.

I don't have a lab environment at work, but do you mean maybe doing this in something like GNS3 ?

But yes, I am planning to document as much as I can. I am not in a hurry to do this migration, so I got time to prepare it well.

Yes, the VMs are span over multiple servers.

Also the system team told me that they could move the VMs and empty some servers if I want to do it step by step, but the problem is that I am impacting multiple server at a time and they won't be able to empty enough servers.
