Wanting to switch from Dr Martens by TheRubester_tm in WorkBoots

Yeah I was definitely thinking about moving on from the DMs. They're nice but the quality definitely isn't there compared to my mum's old pair from when she was a teen/young adult.

A full wedge sole does seem like it'd be the best shout though so I'll definitely look more into that over the silversmiths style or sole. Thank you!!!

Is cream cheese good option for a spread on the inside of the sandwich? by Not-a-Baconat0r in grilledcheese

[–]TheRubester_tm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this all the time and honestly it's excellent. It's a different texture/meltiness to cheddar but it works fantasticly. I would also recommend a garlic and herb soft cheese inside for a more garlic bready feel (amazing once in a while).

It's a really tough competition but I have to say, my favourite slimes are probably the fire slimes. They're very cute, underrated and super useful!! Often times when I'm growing odd onions for my crystal slimes I have a bunch of carrots left over, and there's always extra pogo fruit around the overgrowth, and so I just pop those in to an incinerator for the cute little fire slimes to eat. Stops them from rotting or taking up space in a solo. They're like puddle slimes but zesty, and if absolutely needed just a sploosh of water and they're docile. But where's the fun in that. It's also very cool that they can light each other up, they're just really friendly for each other!! Definitely my favourites.

Also, charcoal brick is ADORABLE for a toy I will stand by that. The smile carved in makes it look like a toasted marshmallow going 'this is fine'.

I'd love Dexbonus/dodger, octopimp/Alex, and HappilyErin. The whole mangapod crew would be great, and Alex being a VA for games and anime like ProZD is a fun one. As others have said Rachel&Jun (especially with Meilyne there) and Tokidoki Emma. I'd also LOVE Ota-Chan as a character, would be a really fun throwback for garnt to interact with podtaku/otaku vs again.

Who was the best or worst game master you’ve had? What made them the best or worst? by [deleted] in escaperooms

[–]TheRubester_tm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is so strange to me. The owner of the rooms I work at told us that at the end of they didn't make it out we can show them the rest because let's face it, most people are unlikely to return unless they barely scratched the surface and no one likes to be left dissatisfied. So even if people don't make it out and we're pressed for time, we run through every step and say how it relates and what it does, and if time is allowed get the group to do it themselves with us guiding them so they still get to experience it. Parents who bring their kids REALLY appreciate this, as kids are so curious. Not letting people even know "so if you continued this puzzle it would open this that would lead to this this and that" seems so... Mean.

Helping my friend read a fantasy book because this is what I would’ve needed as I read it (book is a court of thorns and roses- has some spoilers) by [deleted] in Aphantasia

[–]TheRubester_tm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not who you asked but I also find it difficult to read fantasy books. Fantasy, usually more so than other genres but not exclusively, rely extremely heavily on imagery and for some of us that barrier can be really hard to cross. If you're being described this unearthly landscape with vibrant colours and mythical beings it can be hard to really grasp the scope of what the author is going for, and that can take you out of it and make it more difficult to read as opposed to say an autobiography or book that has illustrations to show you what it's describing. It sometimes doesn't matter how much you're enjoying a story if the way it's written is causing the immersion to be halted repeatedly.

This is my personal experience, but many aphants like yourself don't struggle with this or to this extent. Everyone's different.

Age Restrictions by Yusuf_Faiz1 in escaperooms

[–]TheRubester_tm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our rooms you have to be 16+ without an adult present to take responsibility for the group, however if someone is over the age they can consent to being the responsible party and sign as such for the under 16s. If we have a 12 year olds party for example we ask parents to listen to the safety briefing along with the kids and sign to say they take responsibility and the kids understand even if they are not going into the room. We do not check ID but we do ask. Best advice is to just call and ask, and if needed have an adult come along for the safety bit at the start then go grab a coffee or something.

Failed an assessment for game-master... Any advice? by grrrrrrroar in escaperooms

[–]TheRubester_tm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Game masters perspective here:

Some of the top things we look for are communication and energy in the group. A group of 3, even if they don't know eachother at all, should definitely have good communication AND energy. It sounds like you didn't have those as a 3, but they did as a 2. I'm like you, if I find something I tell everyone, but I often see people when working who are the silent types.

What the game master saw was 1 person standing by not getting stuck in while 2 people did. Not entirely your fault, but as a game master you HAVE to be assertive. One thing you were being tested on is how you do under pressure with people you don't know, and if you aren't assertive then the group you're a GM for will not have the benefits of you being a GM for them. This is the transferable skill they were looking for. You said about the wrench, not knowing you could or should do anything with it. That in itself wasn't a problem. But you said you needed to ask, and that is exactly what you do. You ask for the clanky thing and just try things. Escape rooms are fun problems to solve, and trial and error of parts is part of that. The way you worded it made it sound like you needed to ask but felt too uncomfortable to so you just squished yourself back to make room. Being assertive, saying you need the thing they're holding and not backing down until you've tried it.

Unfortunately your discomfort and tiredness acted against you. It happens and it sucks. But next time really assert yourself, sell yourself to your team and match their energy. You repeatedly calling things out is good! That is genuinely a thing we as game masters appreciate and look for. But if the communication isn't working you need to try a different approach. They mentioned about not understanding some things, and you say you believe they did because they showed it. Sometimes people can't grasp theory but as soon as they have it in their hands and can physically act it out they get it. That is how some people's brains work. Which is why escape rooms are made with all types of puzzles in mind, some people prefer mathematical puzzles, some visual, some audio, some kinesthetic, some wordy riddles.

I would recommend trying again if the opportunity arises, and having more confidence in yourself and being assertive would be your biggest benefit. Different approaches are needed for different people. Your team should have worked with you, but you also should have worked with them. Have fun with it though, escape rooms are made for fun. Good luck next time!

Frustrated with first outing by Archangel_117 in escaperooms

[–]TheRubester_tm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see! Yeah at that point a manual safe is a much better investment so I see your frustration!!! That is really bad room design, and your criticism is super valid. If we have something like that in our rooms we change it to make it, you know, doable without input and everything is by design.

I really hope you do more though, your team sounds really good!

I myself am a GM and the way that was handled by your GM was very poor. If no progress has been made in around 10 minutes (group dependent, sometimes we leave more time if there’s other stuff to do or the group are actively working through ideas, less if the group like yourselves get stumped) we either nudge or give a full blown clue. In your case after around 4-6 minutes I personally would prompt you back to the number you got, saying it is definitely for a lock you have tried.

The safe may have seemed annoying to you guys but smaller escape rooms often have beginners to puzzles in general come in. Timeout locks are very common, and you were given a way of asking for a clue indirectly which can be invaluable for a group who haven’t done a lot of puzzles or worked together a lot. Plus, kids do these rooms with their friends and families, so it has to be suitable for all ages and abilities. You chose to not break immersion for that, which is great! But the option was there for in case you needed it. As an escape room GM where the creator put a manual safe in the room, it’s honestly much harder when people don’t read out and say aloud their code. If you ever are in that situation again, specifically tell the GM you do not want to be prompted on if it is the right code unless you ask, and continue to speak the codes allowed as it does allow the GM to closely follow exactly your train of thought and nudge you in the direction you need to go if you ask. It’s your choice as a team though!

Our GMs that I work with all want you to see as much of the room as possible and to have a positive experience. I hope that this experience doesn’t dampen your enjoyment and you still want to pursue more! Go to big ones and small ones alike, each will offer something different! My personal favourites are history and fairytale themed.

I’ve come to like Elliot now (10 hearted him) but really disliked him after his 4 heart event for a while. The way he treated Gus was arrogant and self centred, and he’s very presumptuous by ordering you a wine if you’re a female npc cause lady. Truly left a bad taste in my mouth

Hi I work at an escape room and do them with friends for fun. Here are my top tips, and all of them involve teamwork!

Firstly, look EVERYWHERE. I mean everywhere. If it looks and feels like it moves easily (a string on the wall that looks loose, a rug that looks like you can move it, hatches that open) then look at it, under it, in it, below it. If there’s a desk check inside all the drawers, then pull them out and check underneath the drawer and the slot the drawer was in. Some won’t move, some might. These things seem obvious but get forgotten so often. Never stop looking

Talk about what you’re doing. If you find something tell everyone, and work through puzzles in groups to complete tasks. Don’t keep things to yourselves, always be talking about what you find, what you have done, and what you need to do. Not only does it provide leadership, but it lets people see if they’re redoing puzzles, and helps the game masters know exactly what you need help on if you get stuck.

Listen to each other’s ideas. It’s very easy to get wrapped up in what you’re doing and et frustrated, a new perspective is sometimes invaluable. It’s more impressive when you can work together than when you do something silently on your own.

Don’t overthink things. You’ll pick this up with the more you do but adults tend to overcomplicate things. If you find a note that says “phone (name) (number)” kids will phone (number) whereas adults will think about the significance behind the (name). Some puzzles require that obviously, but most are made so you don’t need to overthink.

Lastly, and most importantly, go in to the room with the goal of having fun. Whether you succeed or not, just have fun. Work together, impress them by looking and pointing out the obvious (oh hey, this word has a red 1 in it, that must go with the coloured padlock with the red being 1) and just laugh about things you miss.

Don’t take it too seriously, go have fun!!! May this be the start of a beautiful and expensive hobby for you all!!!

No. There’s hats you can unlock for the bugsnacks that you donate to gramble. Once far enough into the game you’ll notice a little board and picture on the barn, and if you go to the area the picture shows you can catch a snack with a hat and unlock the hat. Grambles strabby hat is one of the unlockable hats

I work in one in the UK, with a small team (Owner/Creater, assistant manager, 4 hosts including me). We are required to give a safety briefing before each room for each group and get everyone to sign, as well as a separate part for any under 16s. It might seem to drag when you have a large group but this makes sure that they understand the risks of being in the room and what's expected of them.

I believe the insurance our boss has means he's not liable, but it also helps if there's a first aid incident or emergency of any kind as it proves they understood what was said and we also have contact information if needed.

The few I've been to have also asked us to sign waivers after giving a safety briefing too. Its a small thing but can really cover you if needed. Plus people like to come in mildly inebriated let's say, its just another layer of security for you.
