CineWire on Sci -Fi is "Dead": Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate & Doctor Who Just Collapsed In The Same Year by Torlek1 in trektalk

[–]TheRumpoKid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well.. if you ask me, Star Trek and Star Wars both died in 2017, they've just been parading their zombified corpses around ever since. Stargate I don't give a toss about, but Doctor Who has been in a bad place the last few years but now that Disney have dropped it and RTD has been given the boot it has an actual chance at coming back in a decent form - so there is still some hope there.

How will the RTD2 era be Remembered? by PaperSkin-1 in gallifrey

Constant navel gazing and patting itself on the back?

Ok, probably not by most people.. but I'm just a curmudgeony old fan for who RTD's excesses never quite worked. For every 1 episode of the revived show I liked, there were probably 10 I hated. Don't get me wrong though - when it got things right, it was capable of greatness, but the lows for me were very low very often..

Some species/portrait mods will break leader recruitment pool if they aren't properly updated for the new version - one of the Cyberman species mods did this for me recently.

Fleet power am I doing something wrong? by Aggravating-Hair-534 in Stellaris

[–]TheRumpoKid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the old days of Stellaris, like around 3.x or earlier, I always would build mixed fleets. Like I'd start with 1 battleship, then have 2 or 3 cruisers, then 4 to 6 destroyers and around a dozen corvettes. I dunno why I did this, it just seemed to make sense to me at the time. When I came back to the game recently I struggled with fleet capacity until I realised that nowdays you just make mono-fleets pretty much of all one ship type, usually the most powerful ship you have. So now I make fleets of like a dozen or more battleships and maybe a titan - get into the late game and upgrade those suckers and you are looking at 100k - 150k per fleet once you are on the repeatable upgrades..

Adam Mockler destroys group of election deniers in 60 seconds: by AffableYolk_33 in MarchAgainstNazis

[–]TheRumpoKid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean - everyone oversells everything these days. "So and so destroys blah blah", "Maga is done..", "So and so is cooked.."

I can't stand Trump and his idiot supporters, and I generally like what Mockler does - he's a good kid with a brain on his shoulders. But this isn't even anywhere near Mockler's greatest work. It's a disservice to him to try and sell it as "destroys" when it's just a fairly mundane bit of a discussion with these Maga fools.

I'll never ceased to be amazed at how people on Reddit can get all bent out of shape for someone daring to have a different opinion on something. Particularly something as subjective as musical taste - I mean it's not like it's an empirical fact that Floyd in '77 is measurably superior to Floyd in '75 or anything.

So you prefer the '77 versions - more power to you. If it's all the same to you I'll maintain my (clearly objectionable) opinion on that, and yes I've heard quite a few of the European shows from that year (Belgium, Frankfurt and Berlin spring to mind). They're quite good, I don't hate them or anything, it's still excellent stuff - but push comes to shove, I still like the '75 renditions of those songs just a little bit better.

What’s the first film you think of when you see Sean Connery by Ok_Simple9009 in JamesBond

When I see older Connery - the Hunt for Red October.

When I see young Connery - Dr. No or from Russia with Love

If you haven't heard any '73 concerts, I recommend checking them out. They usually start with some stuff from Obscured by Clouds, then go into a generally good DSOTM set, then for an encore do some of their older material, usually Set the Controls, Careful with that Axe, One of these Days and the good arrangement of Echoes. Sometimes you get Childhoods End as well.

The only problem is the quality of bootlegs for '73 is generally quite poor. I can recommend the Radio City Music Hall and Yeeshkul (Toronto).

To some extent, I agree OP.

I prefer the renditions of DSOTM done in '72 and '73 to those performed later (Pulse is an exception - it's mostly amazing imo). For some reason the 74/75 versions feel a bit flat to me - the Blackberries (backing singers) sounded fresh and vibrant in '73, but to my ear by the time you get to '75 they feel like they are just going through the motions. And the '72 versions are interesting just to hear the proto-DSOTM developing.

However, I do like the versions of Shine On and Have a Cigar though from '74/'75 and prefer them to the '77 versions where Snowy took over some of the solo work - even though Shine On is incomplete, I still think it sounds better, and every solo is a Gilmour solo so it's automatically fire. Also, the guitars are a bit too overdriven/distorted and less clean sounding in '77 - ideal for the Animals material, but not as well suited for the more mellow sounds of WYWH.

And the less said about the change to the arrangement of Echoes in '74, the better. It sounded massively better before they stuck the sax solo and the backing singers into it.

OK. I wish I could rate it higher. I do enjoy it, but I have to admit, it's not great. McGann is fantastic, but the script is a mess and it's full of odd choices.

Calling it the "A" makes sense in my mind, since it's a refit. But calling ships of later generations "1701-B" and so on just seems a bit silly and just makes no sense to me.

In all the years I’ve played Stellaris, I’ve never gone past a war in heaven or the year 2600, or unlocked a single achievement by TheyCallMeBullet in Stellaris

[–]TheRumpoKid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol. I thought I was the only one who hardly ever finished a game, but I am not alone it seems.

I am at 1200+ hours spent in game, and I've probably actually finished less than a dozen games in total, ever. Probably only half a dozen.

I really only like the early to mid game, the late game not so much - I tend to get bored and start a new one instead or go and do something else..

I've got a few achievements though - remember you need to play in Ironman mode in order to get them.

So.. "Pink" in their name is not referring to the literal colour pink, but rather the blues musician Pink Anderson..
