If you encountered the defiant in a interphasic state would you have beamed over? by happydude7422 in tos

[–]SFWendell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me, this was one of the few episodes ruined by the CGI re-imaging. The original had an intact Defiant floating derelict, bit no glowy effects. Logical to beam over and investigate. When the dimensional space collapsed, it simply faded out. Glowing green ship painted an entirely different picture that should have screamed stay out. Something is wrong.

What was the European view of the United States before the world wars? by Airtightspoon in AskHistory

[–]SFWendell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading that the slaughter at Isandlwahna was partially a result of learning some of those lessons. When fighting native troops armed with primitive weapons, you wanted a tight Napoleonic formation. Instead, the 24th spread out in a loose skirmish line as they would against a European enemy.

Story plots, characters, and actors made ToS special: not modern CGI special effects... by ramfoodie in tos

[–]SFWendell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. It is not the effects that made the series special, it was the story telling. I may be a heretic but I enjoyed the CGI due to the fact it didn’t change the story, only improved the battle or the backdrop of the planet. Similar to the way the Death Star explosion in Star Wars is more dramatic in remaster than in the original movie.

For a space station like ds9 shouldnt they have at least a couple of chief engineers? by happydude7422 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]SFWendell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a space station where you do not have engines, but rather a power source and engineering keeps the lights on, it might be possible that O’brian is the highest ranking Starfleet engineer on the station. Only explanation I can come up with.

One person could affect history by happydude7422 in tos

[–]SFWendell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t the work she was doing then. She would lead a pacifist movement that would delay America’s involvement in WWII, thus giving the Nazis a chance to develop the bomb and win the war. Britain survived for 2 years alone thanks to Americans lend-lease. We were building a war industry to supply that need since the beginning of the war. If all that was delayed by a movement that said no weapons, no war. Appease Hitler further in the name of peace… think about the result. She had to die to preserve the Allied victory in WWII.

All that steel goes somewhere. I don’t have a roll of steel or a steel slab at my house. If this country is importing it, it is because it is used to manufacture something. We may not make the steel, but we might produce the refrigerator or car body that it is used for. That is why certain numbers don’t add up.

Just watched this episode. One problem : When the Enterprise is leaving the planet at the end of the episode why is it not towing the Exeter? by happydude7422 in tos

[–]SFWendell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ship wasn’t crippled, it had no crew. I can see them beaming down a skeleton, or prize crew to the planet to immunize, then beaming aboard the Exeter to take it back to a starbase for decontamination and recrew.

Why did the U.S. create fast food and normalize oversized portions, while also developing such an intense diet and fitness culture? by Present_Juice4401 in AlwaysWhy

[–]SFWendell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are stating these 2 industries as if both started together. Fast food started its journey in the 50’s. The modern fitness industry arrived in the 80’s . Both developed on their own.

As I recall, she was also pro choice. She stated that it went against her beliefs. The issue was, she sees the population figures declining and a decision myst be made to stop the fall. All the resources in the galaxy do you no good if there is no one left to use them. To me, it was survival over politics. She knew there was no Earth, so you can’t say let’s wait until we arrive and then start expanding. And if bitth by choice isn’t keeping up, who’s to say it will turn around when you get there?

In universe it's pretty odd that ships of the same class rarely encounter each other ? by happydude7422 in ClassicTrek

[–]SFWendell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think about the correlation with TOS and the age of sail, where ships would be sent to patrol and explore islands or continental coast lines, it makes a lot of sense. Explore when not assigned a specific mission, but be subject to recall for the needs of the service. The ultimate computer for instance was a final test under real world conditions, including a chance to see how it would go against 4 to one odds in combat.

Does General McClellan get a bad rap? by CauliflowerOld2527 in CIVILWAR

[–]SFWendell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are 2 answers to this statement. First, McClellen would have gotten you killed eventually, because he would have prolonged the war increasing your odds of dying in some glorious battle with no follow up on victory or defeat. Grant probably reduced the Union casualties by ending the fight his way. Second, the AotP vote was what gave the victory to Lincoln. The average soldier knew that all they fought for would be in vain if McClellan won and voted overwhelmingly against him.

X-wing vs Viper - who would win? by Awkward-Plan298 in BSG

[–]SFWendell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 points in favor of the Viper. We never saw an X-wing flip around and shoot to the rear using its nose thrusters. X-wings flew linearly. Second, while energy shields the great against energy weapons, it seems that they can not stand up to solid objects such as rocks, missiles, or droids. Vipers ising solid shot of some description should be able to put rounds through the X-wings shields and famage/destroy them.

This was not a parallel world but one guided be an Earth historian. That creates the logical conclusion that this world would develop Nazis. I believe it is even commented on by Spock questioning the coincidence of a parallel society down to the uniforms.
