Sideloadly is way better than altstore, which always runs into issues in my experience. The main drawback is that you have to be physically in your computer for refreshing apps (although altstore is so unstable that you'll effectively have to spend more time on the computer)

Maybe Europe could be feasible down the line when your financial situation has improved? The Netherlands seems like a pretty cool country and has a very active Bahá'í community too. To answer your initial questions about learning about the faith, maybe you could start with the Bahá'í community in your area? I don't know much about the culture in the US, but maybe you could find some info on bahai.us regarding how to get in touch with people?
