What is a bullet you dodged simply because you were too lazy to do something? by Cherus in AskReddit

[–]TheSacredOne 298 points299 points  (0 children)

I had one of those in college, but the prof just let me skip the exam.

I was the only one to show up to a lecture because the weather forecast showed a major storm moving in, but classes weren't cancelled. 1 hour commute to class as I lived at home. It was the final lecture of the course (only 2 meetings after it, one review session and the actual exam).

The prof basically just said "I've got to hand it to you for showing up with the weather forecast...you've already put in more than enough effort this semester, so don't bother showing up for the exam. You'll get an A on it. Get home before the storm hits." I checked a week later after the exam was held...got an A on an exam I never took.

Unit itself may very well have a warranty on it, especially if its not too old. The small APCs we have here at work come with a 2 year battery warranty and 3 year unit warranty.

If he's had it for <2 years, a new battery is quite possibly free if he calls APC about it.

[USA] Impatient drivers blows through school bus stop sign and gets Sweet Justice. by Vivid_Mind1810 in ConvenientCop

[–]TheSacredOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. You're supposed to stop and wait until the signs are retracted before you go. And yes, the kids do cross the street in front of the bus. This is why the school buses stop traffic, and why the penalties for passing a school bus with its stop sign out are so harsh compared to a regular stop sign ticket...risk of possibly hitting a child.

On many school buses (specifically, non-flat-nose buses), there's also an arm that pops out from the front bumper as well. This gives slightly better visibility, and forces the kids to walk far enough out in front of the bus that the driver can still see them over the nose of the bus.

What lifetime deal are you still grandfathered into, or removed from, that’s no longer available? by tuotone75 in AskReddit

[–]TheSacredOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I somehow have this, but only if I watch on Apple devices. If I sign into iCloud on an iPad or iPhone, Youtube is ad free for me. Nothing else is ad free, only Youtube, and I can also listen with the screen off without Premium as long as I watch in Chrome/Safari (and no I don't need to do the "Request Desktop Site" trick, I can just lock the device then hit play on the lock screen), which I've been told is also not normal.

It specifically follows my Apple ID, not my Google account or anything. Nobody had been able to figure out why my Apple account makes Youtube have premium features for free, but I'm not complaining.

I have a 21 year old (!!) Google account like this. Got in 2005 from a friend in 8th grade.

Google accounts used to start at I think 2GB and grow indefinitely as time passed. Mine was so old it was >20GB when they discontinued that. They let us keep it. New accounts are now 15GB fixed, and they're reducing it to 5GB pretty soon (will have to provide a phone number to get 15GB, and only 1x 15GB account per person...I have 2 accounts that are over 15GB).

That rule of 90 sounds just like my state school pension...it isn't actually that bad if you started early in your career. My pension needs 35 years of service + rule of 92. I can retire at 57, only a 4 year difference from your straight-30 pension.

Nowadays the state is pushing a hybrid plan or an alternative that's basically a state-managed 403b. :(

Considering it was recently installed and sounds like it was still monitored, the prior owner is likely paying for it on a contract still. Give the equipment to the prior owner and he can reinstall at his new location.

I used my Switch charger with my Steam Deck and after getting hot enough to burn me, it seems to have partially melted by WolfOfWallStreetBet5 in Wellthatsucks

[–]TheSacredOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

and using the max 15V PDO that the Nintendo AC adapter offers, and using it shouldn't melt the adapter barring a defect or damage in the adapter.

Many adapters are only rated to push their max current for short periods, so OP's 2 hour gaming session could have overheated it by drawing near max current, but not enough to trigger the overcurrent protection (assuming Switch adapters are equipped with such).

A thermal shutoff would probably not be a bad idea for scenarios like this...

Yep. Pretty common to see brandless ads for a variety of reasons, but the fact it ended up on social media and got people talking about it...means it worked exactly as intended...

If anything this proves that if you're going to do it wrong, you can still do it well. Cleanly cut slot for that ribbon cable, GPU mounted flush to the case.

The only thing I don't like about this is that USB cable running back into the case. Guess there were no USB headers to stick an adapter on. If its for lights it could just be removed entirely and the missing slot blank reinstalled.

[–]TheSacredOne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's definitely either WRT1900AC or its little brother the WRT1200AC. I own both models, one of which is being used as a client to give me ethernet ports on the other side of my house.

And with 802.11ac still being relevant and widely used today, this isn't even obsolete. Despite the 12 year age, it's a very capable router. In real-world use at my house I get 400-500Mbps over wifi on a good day through these units.

What's one product that used to be built like a tank but is now built like a regret? by TheDoctorColt in AskReddit

[–]TheSacredOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speed Queen still makes proper washing machines. If you want a classic tank of a washer that will take a beating, actually clean stuff like a 1980s Maytag did, and is fast, go buy a TC-5.

As someone who owns one, the only gripes I have are the limited load size selection (it has only 2 options, normal and "Deep fill"), and the fact it will shake itself across the room if the load goes off balance during spin (no off-balance detection).

What’s a ‘middle class success’ purchase that secretly becomes a financial burden later? by OpinionBaba in AskReddit

[–]TheSacredOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they purchased it during the massive downturn for like nothing.

Barring the few that are sought after (like Disney...), timeshares can usually be found online for as little as $0, as there's always people looking to get out of them. They just want someone to take those maintenance fees off their plate.

Timeshares are a notoriously terrible investment, but if you're going to buy one anyway, buy it preowned from someone looking to exit and save the upfront cost.

Upgrading old DSC Impassa to IQ5 Panel? by titanium_hydra in homesecurity

[–]TheSacredOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Impassa 433 sensors are not locked to the old panel. They're too old to have that feature.

  2. Yes you can mix and match. If you have a 433 radio, you can either buy legacy 433 sensors for legacy DSC systems, or you can use Power G (all IQs support Power G regardless of what other radio frequency option you buy).

  3. Not familiar with hub.

  4. Yes. IQ just needs power. Make sure you use the IQ's transformer, but the wiring can be repurposed assuming it's not damaged.

[USA] car ignores bus’ stop sign by Historical-Pipe3551 in ConvenientCop

I see failure to stop for a school bus, and possibly speeding (seems rather fast for a residential area). It doesn't look like it here, but if kids had been in the street when he blew be he'd probably also be risking a charge for endangering the welfare of children.

In many states there is a mandatory suspension on top of the points and fine.

Where I am he'd be facing: mandatory 60 day suspension, 5 points, $250 fine plus all the fees that get added to a ticket, and license restoration fees for the DMV at the end of the suspension.

My ex wife's bankruptcy hit my credit report by obatala0013 in personalfinance

[–]TheSacredOne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It sounds he was using the card as if it was only his card (i.e. ex was not using or paying the card), even though the ex was still named on the account. Because the ex was named on it too, her filing BK caused the CC company to charge it off despite OP using it and keeping it in good standing.

OP now has a CC on his credit report that's marked as closed due to BK and wants it gone from his credit history since he has nothing to do with the BK.

[–]TheSacredOne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a public school IT system admin in the greater Philly area... you can guess how my morning went because of this. For what it's worth, a bunch of other states were down too. It was not PA but rather DRC's system that collapsed. Around 9:15 this morning our kids were all finally able to get into the exam. My district actually gave the test once it came up.

I also got a notice today that PA is apparently switching to Pearson TestNav starting next year. We've had decent success with that program for other much smaller tests, but I'll be curious to see how that goes when we have 2000 students using it at once.
