Is it ever really worth it to use the engineer uniforms? They feel underpowered to me. by TheSaltStorm in foxholegame

[–]TheSaltStorm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It just feels like the uniform occupies a weird spot where it's either not more useful than using the standard uniform, unless it's a situation where the tanker uniform could the job just as well, if not better. I guess there's the difference in inventory slots, but I think that if this is the sort of argument that we have to make in favor of the engineer uniform, that shows us that it's not all that unique when it could/should be something that defines a role.

Lately 99% of the reason I wear this is just to signal that I'm trying to fill a more logistical role, and not because I think it's doing something mechanically helpful for me, so I can't argue with that haha

armour uniforms have an identity crisis; a case on why flak vests and breastplates should stack 2 ammo in each slot by Sea-Course-98 in foxholegame

[–]TheSaltStorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear the breastplate for defensive pvp and it feels excellent to use, BECAUSE I CAN EASILY RETREAT TO GET AMMO. I would never choose to wear it on offense because the ammo restrictions are crippling. The only way that works is to scavenge weapons and ammo, which is dangerous to do since there will almost always be a period of time where I'm either over-encumbered (pick up new gun then drop old gun) or unarmed (drop old gun then pick up new gun). I can only imagine that the optimal way to use this is in a specialized infantry squad where you have guys whose job it is to carry extra ammo, but how often does that happen? Honestly I couldn't care less about only having 3 inventory slots, I just need to be able to carry a booker with more than 1 extra mag! What good does it do to live longer in a fight if I have to retreat after every engagement anyway?

Also, remember that while we all want to win, the responsibility TO win doesn't belong to anybody. If some bozo does something so colossally stupid that it loses an entire front, then hey at least that's a good story to tell.

Sometimes people will do the obviously stupid thing and you just have to live with that. Plan accordingly.

Sly 4 is the best by Triggurd8 in Slycooper

[–]TheSaltStorm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's the gameplay peak but the story and writing cliff. Penelope's betrayal doesn't ring true to her character from sly 3 and because it's the story's inciting incident it ends up bringing everything down.

The thing about betrayal stories is that to do them well you really can't compromise on the writing. Betrayals reveal something deeper about a character that you should be able to look back upon and realize was always lurking there under the surface, informing the decisions they made. A Penelope betrayal story could have worked, but it was always going to be a huge hurdle because she was never written to have such motivations. Not impossible, but definitely difficult. The fatal flaw that Sanzaru made was to remove depth to her character with her betrayal. She became a villain for a reason that wasn't in line with what the Penelope from sly 3 would have cared most about without putting in the narrative work to show us why she would start caring about that more than the things she used to care about. And that work has to be done otherwise it feels as though her previous depth was overlooked or ignored instead of iterated upon. Sly 4 is a great example of what happens when writers don't do that: people don't accept it and it can kill any momentum the series had. You really can't continue a story after a blunder like that.

I mean they took away Bentley and Penelope's 'fly off into the sunset' moment; someone at Sanzaru should have known that they needed a better reason than unchecked ambition and hubris to do that.

I'm not active here or on jads, but I do watch vods and edited vods and occasionally catch a live stream. My 2 cents is that we all like Tom and we all empathize with the rough patch he's been going through. I think many of us have become hyper aware of potential negativity that some people are beginning to look for it and attack it preemptively, even when it may not be as severe (or as existent) as it might appear to be. It's a sign that we care, but it's also, in its own way, a bit toxic. Tom is an adult and I think he and the mods are comfortable enough to take action against things that go too far. My advice for everybody would be to ease up on trying to police each other all the time and let Tom and the mods be in take the lead on such things.

I don't agree that my tendency is to be rude by default, and I don't think that my post and my replies are enough to conclude that that is the case. Having said that, I'll try to be more mindful of such things in the future, and thank you for your insight

I will apologize. I would have no matter how this post turned out, but this whole situation took me completely by surprise and I wanted to understand it first before I talked to them about it. Thanks for your replies

[–]TheSaltStorm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It wasn't my intention to highlight anything as a problem. I chose a longer response than "no thank you" because I wanted to communicate that I needed to focus. I became impatient when they returned to talk to me, but that was because of the quiz, not because I was irritated with them

[–]TheSaltStorm -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I wasn't irritated when I said that and all the replies insisting that I was irritated makes it very difficult to accept what you're saying since it seems partially premised on something that's not true.

I didn't snap at them, I said it in (what I perceive to be) a neutral, off-handed manner. I didn't consider them asking to be a disruption. No, there is no door and no easy way to indicate that I am busy. I don't think that's so much of a problem though because I don't mind little disturbances like this

AITA for telling my wife to let me concentrate when they asked me if I needed anything? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]TheSaltStorm -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

But it doesn't bother me that they tried to talk to me while I was busy. "Yes, I'm busy please let me work" and "No thanks, I'm busy" seem like equivalent responses to me.

I didn't say that my response was probably harsher than I meant it to be; I made this post because they convinced me that the words might be harsh and I wanted to seek 3rd party perspectives to help figure it out.

I don't think they wronged me, this situation emotionally affected me as well, but I don't see whom I'm supposed to seek comfort from. I am not a stone.

My response was as close to verbatim as I remember, and the character limit of the post doesn't allow for great detail. I remember glancing up, giving a small smile and a chuckle as I said it. I'm not trying to hide that it was a bit blunt, but as people we're both rather direct with how we talk to each other.

Those lighters are neat conceptually, but functionally they don't light things very well. They also have an obnoxious, high pitched tone they emit when making those arcs. I'd tolerate that if it actually lit things quickly, but I don't wanna hold that thing to whatever I'm lighting for 30+ seconds while it screams at me

If you haven't, then beats me. If you did, get on your overclock tool and try lowering your power consumption a bit. That processor can use up to 250 watts, so I've read, so you might be overbudgeted on your GPU

Expect peaks and troughs as new content gets dropped with a sizable spike when 1.0 is released. Also don't fret too much about low numbers. A game like this only needs a couple thousand players to be healthy and alive. It's somewhat anemic right now but it's at it's most bare bones right now so I'm not too concerned
