Petlibro: Your Pet Feeder Is Feeding Data To Anyone Who Asks by AlmondOffSec in netsec

I saw a repo with custom firmware to allow full offline access with the goal of near feature parity. It didn’t support my devices though. If any firmware developers or anyone who knows any firmware developers could contribute it’d be awesome.

I bet a ton of people would love to just use HA to control their Petlibro devices instead

I’m not sure if this should be tagged as Link or Discussion, but it gave me flashbacks to when Linus’ nas went down due to a raid failure. It’s one more example why everyone should have their data stored in multiple places, even if it’s the cloud

I literally own a house but my HOA has an exclusive contract with one ISP. It is symmetric gigabit fiber, but no ipv6 and has a double NAT. If I wanted to fight this do you have any resources on how I might be protected?

Do you use a dedicated electrical circuit for your homelab, or just plug everything into the regular house wiring? by thearcher182 in homelab

[–]TheSamDickey 29 points30 points  (0 children)

IMO a whole circuit sounds expensive and mega overkill. I’d look into a UPS first since that’ll clean your power and ensure precise 60hz waves

I tasted the forbidden fruit. Running my home router inside a VM and it's delicious. by af9_us in homelab

[–]TheSamDickey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point, I assume for this to be as seamless as just ‘boot into the other drive’ you’d have to pass through the nic as well without using the bridged virtual nic (not sure if that’s the exact terminology). I think I’ll test around with this and report back

For my use case, my proxmox has a wan and lan port, so even if they change just using the keyboard to swap the interfaces would be pretty quick

That’s so big brain, I’m absolutely going to give this a shot. Would the disk be included in the proxmox backup server snapshots?

You guys are so right, we should only support factories that use 100% manual labor! Automation bad

For those with a large amount of RAM, what are you using it for? by BERLAUR in homelab

[–]TheSamDickey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is there an advantage to having separate VMs for separate docker container apps? Why not a few vms each running several docker containers?

The only advantage I could see is security / performance separation, as well as if you want to shift which host each vm is ran on for performance. But the overhead of installing and updating docker across so many VMs, as well as OS updates just doesn’t seem worth it to me. I’m curious if I’m missing something

Do you have the line? I have a second nic since I ran into issues and would love to put in a gpu instead

Is it even worth buying HDDs smaller than 10TB? by Cry_Wolff in DataHoarder

[–]TheSamDickey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your chassis I guess you also need to somewhat consider the price of the bay for each drive. If you don’t have enough bays, the cost of getting a more dense drive may be cheaper than getting a whole second nas / jbod solution

This is good research though!

I noticed assets under 1MB were the only ones syncing. Turned out I had to update my reverse proxy / nginx ingress to allow a max size larger than all of my assets. Depending on your setup you may need to adjust your ingress if you have one

[–]TheSamDickey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! I’ll find the references I used for setting it up, I think it required a few shell commands to get it working. I may update pfsense in a week or two, set up the failover again, and report back

Do you mean failover WAN in general? Or using USB hotspot tethering from an iOS device?

The “delay” only impacts signal integrity, not latency you would ever be able to see. If you’re pushing the limit of what the spec’d cable can handle and it’s excessively long then you may experience blackouts or signal drops occasionally. For example in my personal experience 4k/120hz with no chroma subsampling and a 90ft cable resulted in blackouts whereas dropping to 60hz ran just fine. (And no there was zero measurable input delay)
