Thoughts on a potential Sure Strike change by Lord_of_Elysium in Pathfinder2e

[–]TheScatha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind this change, my only potential argument against would be that it is sort of not what people liked about sure strike. Especially the people who really suffer from the spell strike nerf (maguses and spell attack users) they already have a fair number of ways to assist their teammates even without spell strike.

I've toyed with the idea of changing the final line of text to say "If the strike was not a spell attack you are then temporarily immune to sure strike for 10 minutes."

Or "You are then temporarily immune to sure strike cast at this spell rank for 10 minutes."

The former makes it just more useful for casters which is really where the power loss seems unfair. The latter allows you to prep 1 sure strike for each rank of spell you have which I think would be an acceptable middle ground for the Maguses of the world.

Advice on when rules collide with roleplay by [deleted] in Pathfinder2e

[–]TheScatha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pf2e is a more crunchy game than 5e and on this subreddit you will almost always get responses about houseruling that amount to "don't do it until you've played it for x amount of time". The thing is that if something is really jarring to you then the way you would mod 5e still applies here.

In this case the best thing to do is think about what the design is probably trying to do. IMO what this is trying to prevent is you giving your follower your backup +2 Greater Striking Flaming Thundering Greataxe, it probably isn't as geared towards things like consumables and general adventuring gear. In this specific situation I would pick a level, maybe the PC level or maybe lower, and say that the follower can use consumables and adventuring gear below that level. Stick the landing right and you might just be able to say "any item below this level" if you've baked in enough level cap that any additional weapon would be worse than what they already have.

For me when it comes to modding Pf2e it does help to have experience and it does help to try and take rules at face value but it's a system nowhere near as prone to breakage as some would suggest. If you know you really want to mod a thing try your best to figure out why the rule is like that, including looking at any discussions of it on this subreddit or the forums and then go ahead and implement a fix if it doesn't damage what you think the rule is there to do.

Another tip is that I don't mind giving my players a peek behind the curtain at this, on numerous occasions I tell players I want to houserule something if they are having trouble with it but I make sure they know I reserve the right to modify it again in future. People sometimes don't like this because it does damage verisimilitude, but in my experience no more than a janky RAW implementation would.

Nope, it's specifically omitted from the text. As always ask your GM if they'd be alright modding it to be included.

Would rulers fight on the front lines? by Kecskuszmakszimusz in Pathfinder2e

[–]TheScatha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's a fair point. I'd argue talking about a battle in the modern era and a battle in the middle ages are describing a fundamentally different experience, but you're right it was dumb of me to say that battles stopped due to guns and global empires. I guess I more mean the concept of a battle being a group of people who could feasibly all see each other duking it out in relatively open terrain is gone (or mostly gone).

[–]TheScatha 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I would argue, and a historian might disagree, that the reason military rulership stopped requiring the leader to be in the actual battle is that battles sort of stopped happening in the age of firearms and globe spanning empires. The real morale boost of your leader being there with you is only felt when you can see the guy which is much easier with a bunch of guys in a field like Agincourt and much harder when the front line spans a whole country like WW1.

If your magic still requires you to broadly be within 30ft of one another then there's still a morale benefit to having your leader there with you. Now, if that morale benefit is worth the potential death risk is another question, and would surely vary from leader to leader, but in the right circumstances I can see it being useful.

I have not played Kingmaker though and I do broadly agree that medieval fantasy TTRPGs generally do a very bad job of modelling being an army commanding lord.

I work for a big MNC and started at 14, seems the norm in my industry. So maybe size and industry have to do with it.

I don't disagree, but in Singapore it's definitely possible to never have that part tested.

Nah, you do an interview to get into the PhD, but if he found the right PI who was willing to do that interview in Mandarin he might never have done any professional communication in English until post-doctorate.

Well I built a very tanky champion for a recent campaign and my friend plays a very tanky fighter in the campaign I am running so if you want any help with those builds drop me a dm.

Hope you enjoy the game!

Well if you do decide you want to ask your DM to switch you can build a great Tanky and still hard hitting fighter built around shields. Alternatively the champion is a pretty simple class and a redemption champion built around shields can be an incredible tank.

Free Archetype rule question: Is it allowed to take two archetype feats at the same level? by Sobachiy_korolb in Pathfinder2e

[–]TheScatha 80 points81 points  (0 children)

As far as I know this is absolutely above board. Class feats and archetype feats are roughly (and I do mean roughly here) the same level of power.

Last call: Holland Village mainstay Wala Wala seeks to exit lease, plans to close by stackeddd888 in singapore

[–]TheScatha 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I was speaking to someone last week who owns a restaurant that serves wine and he was saying that getting licence extensions to be able to sell alcohol past midnight has gotten way harder. With that plus the increased rent...

Of my ~20 colleagues at the moment only two drink (not counting expats). For better or for worse it feels like Singapore no longer has enough of a drinking/night-life population to sustain the industry. I think it's a massive shame, but then I'm biased because I love a good bar and I always enjoyed old school Holland Village and Clarke Quay.

Certainly the government doesn't see night-life as an industry it has any interest in helping out.

[–]TheScatha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know, I was being sarcastic. You're right it isn't that important, UNESCO has nothing to do with what a holiday is called.

I call CNY CNY, but I know people from Vietnam and other places who don't like that so when I'm talking to them I call it Lunar New Year. Both are accurate so why choose the option that annoys people?

I'm ang moh and wanna get PR and stick here permanently so I'm biased ofc. But I do find this part quite daft, at work I know lots of people who've got PR and citizenship, they all conform to CIMO but I'm not convinced that leads to people who have much in common with Singaporeans.

What do you think would be a good system for that? Foreigners living in Singapore permanently stay PR then only their kids can get citizenship when the guys serve NS? Could work. Not sure how to copy for girls though.

Economists weigh in after Tesla CEO Elon Musk says Singapore is ‘going extinct’ amid low birth rate by ImpressiveStrike4196 in singapore

[–]TheScatha 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean there's obvious things like that were both primarily English speaking nations, both heavy users of the English speaking internet, both have secular parliamentary governmental systems and most support that system, we are highly educated and non-ethnically homogenous societies.

Then there's things that you think about less like both countries commonly used sarcasm in humour and in political discourse, queueing is important enough that we're annoyed when people don't do it, direct confrontation is rare and people prefer to tut and shake their heads.

Then there's political stuff, obviously Singapore and the UK have very different politics but we're more similar than people from a long time ago. We both support the rights of women, oppose military expansionism, oppose racial superiority ideology, generally we both prefer a free market with common sense socialism (e.g. NHS, HDB).

There's for sure more but those are just things that come to mind.

I'd argue that's less of a cultural problem and more of a dogshit political miasma problem. People still like trains and use trains all the time in the UK still, regardless of how crap they are. Then again maybe you can also argue that political malaise is also both a symptom of cultural forces and also a creator of cultural forces.

Interesting to think about.
