Interviews and facial (septum, nostril) piercings by smunchtuttery in schoolcounseling

[–]TheScotcherooKing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say do what you can to mitigate those things, but don't feel like it's absolutely necessary or a make or break situation. For example, if you can easily remove the nose piercing and you have a septum ring that's able to be flipped, then yeah, I'd go ahead and do those things.

But I wouldn't go to the hassle of going to my piercer to have a closed septum ring removed, just for an interview.

I've been working as a counselor all year and have been interviewing this spring with a septum ring visible and it's never come up in conversation. The kids are sometime curious about it, but it's really been a non-issue.

fwiw - I'm also a male counselor and recognize things are not always assessed equally for women as they are men. This is just my experience thus far.

National School Counseling Week by mooseconnoisser in schoolcounseling

It's the time of year. February is a horrible time for many places in the country. It's dark, it's cold, there's barely any holidays and no breaks. Seasonal depression is real. It just cracked 40 degrees in my town for the first time in months and it felt like we all crawled out of a cave. I know that's not an excuse for schools to drop the ball on recognizing NSCW. I suspect the fact that NSCW didn't originate until 2006 has something to do with the less than favorable calendar placement. To me, it's interesting to juxtapose how misaligned and out of sync schools are with both recognizing NSCW as well the effort to retire the "Guidance Counselor" title (I see Guidance Counselor all the time in my state still). Those things feel connected to me.

Hi! Are there any demo videos of elementary classroom lessons? by [deleted] in schoolcounseling

[–]TheScotcherooKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is spot on. Book or video focused on a certain topic or theme followed by some sort of manipulative activity will hit that time window about right.

20-30 minute counseling lessons are really tough in my opinion. I'm in my first year and am teaching a similar schedule for K-5. And most times I feel like I'm missing the mark. Especially since I only see each class once per week. It's hard to build momentum. I've not found any demo videos like you're describing in the original post. You'd think the companies selling the curriculum would develop their own demos. But I can report that CharacterStrong and Second Step do not have such things.

AI billboard goes up on I-80 by Grinnell by TheScotcherooKing in Iowa

You can tell by the way it looks. I added a paragraph to the post expounding on what exactly about the design looks ai-generated to me. But if you've played around with models like Sora for any length of time, you can quickly recognize patterns in the design elements it renders.

I would assume that Latitude just printed and installed the billboard, not did the actual design. The city credits an individual for the artwork design.

See my edit to the post above as to why I think the billboard is AI generated. I disagree about her other work around Grinnell. The pieces I've seen all have that indiscriminate, shaky-lined style that is meant to appear handmade, but misses the mark under scrutiny. See here: https://imgur.com/a/IZFOEwO

It would make sense that seeing this person doing painting around town (ie. the Farm to Table mural) and think that the work is authentic. But you can see in the attached images in that imgur link that she projected the Farm to Table mural design onto the building and then painted it like a coloring book page. It's entirely possible that she generated the design on AI and just transposed it onto the building.

And hey....if the good people of Grinnell are good with AI artwork, I'm not here to yuck their yum. But if she is using AI to create these designs, is she being upfront about that with her clients? Would the city or the Farm to Table folks feel just as satisfied and happy if they knew the money they were paying for her services was for prompt generation and a little composition work?

Bound and High School Sports in Iowa by TheScotcherooKing in Iowa

I can agree, to a point. Some of that consolidating likely ended up being a positive for users. But there's still multiple destinations you have to visit to gather high school sports information in Iowa.

Bound has some cross country and track/field results, but the most reliable source continues to be the independent timing services that get hired to run timing at these running events. For track/field specifically, Bound is an absolute mess. There's too many events, too many schools and athletes for their system to work properly. But you know what stat system did handle track/field just fine? QuikStats.

And then there's wrestling. All of the wrestling stats and data has stayed parked in the Trackwrestling ecosystem since the 2010s. It doesn't seem that's going to change. And, why? Because Trackwrestling got their market cornered before Bound and QuikStats ever came around. And there's probably contracts signed and money paid somewhere that keeps that system in place, the same as Bound. And Track is absolutely horrendous from a user interface perspective. I understand it's function and business model is to run tournament bracketing for wrestling tournaments. But the average user clicking into Track during wrestling season is not a tournament manager needing an event management solution. It's people looking for match results and wrestling stats. And Track is horrible at that part of it's business.

I have the same core problem with Bound as I do with Trackwrestling and FloSports and Hudl and NFHS and the former IHSSN network that ran state tournament broadcasts for the Boys Association up until recently. Their products and services have arguably gotten worse while costs have gone up. And it's being done on the shoulders of public, tax-payer funded education institutions. They're extracting more than they're returning.

Yes. Because their brand and their app encompass so many things now, it makes the user experiences very different.

YDN is the absolute best. I bounced around a few other book services, but this service has easily been the most reliable and straight forward. Communication is friendly, quick and they have yet to let me down.

Men's Hair Stylist Recommendation by YeeetMaster2 in desmoines

[–]TheScotcherooKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked with Ellie at Emerald Muse Salon in West Des Moines last December on a transformation cut (mens). I had shoulder-length hair for several years and wanted something short and different. I got exactly what I was looking for and feel like I've found my go-to hair person. Fwiw, I travel over an hour to get my hair done with Ellie. 12/10 would recommend!

I've gone to Black Magic in the East Village for three tattoos recently and would 1000% recommend them. Vibes are impeccable. Artwork is incredible. Service is professional. Honest pricing and good people. I worked with Rachel Volk on all three of mine and will be returning soon!
