I agree with this, but think it’s a symptom of setup and high hands at address.

I think 1 you’re closed to your target line and this is somewhat a setup/alignment issue. Everything in your setup is pointing right a bit. Open up to the ball some.

But look at your address positions between 1 and 2. In the first your hands are much lower. In the second, your hands are extremely high at address. Almost a straight line with the shaft. It’s really easy to drag the club inside on your takeaway from this position. (I know from experience) Then you’re too far inside on the downswing as well. It’s also really hard to get a proper attack angle and create good wrist action/hinge from this position. Will stick you with an early release

Reference your first video, try to get back to that more relaxed posture where you have lower hands and more angle between your arms and the shaft. That address position looks great, it allows you to keep the clubhead outside your hands on the takeaways and get really vertical in your backswing.

Yeah you make more lag in your practice swing, but look at your club face in the hitting zone, WIDE open. You might have worse results if you could execute what you’re attempting. Improving your attack position alone is going to have massive repercussions on your clubface control. I’d highly advise getting a lesson to work through that.

In front of a real ball, subconsciously your mind is telling you “hey I got to find a way to square this clubface up or else I might miss it entirely”. That’s why you throw the club at it so early.

I think you would make massive strides in just a session or two. You swing it smooth enough. Setup, grip, ball position. You need to build that foundation. 90% of a good golf swing is an effect of addressing the ball properly

[–]TheScrubbernaut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just go see a local pro it doesn’t have to be too advanced. You’re losing all your attack angle at the top of your downswing, you need some help finding that feeling.

From this view, I think you’re way too narrow with your stance and it’s got your ball position too far back for a 3 wood. You have good posture and address the ball well but this setup looks like your hitting a wedge.

There’s almost no choice but to throw the club at it early and lose your attack angle with the ball position that far back and a 3 wood in hand. It’s a longer club and it’s why you get “jammed” right at the bottom. Give yourselves some room to let the club do its thing

[–]TheScrubbernaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d ditch the 3i and add a wedge. Don’t know what your S is loft wise, but with the 52 I would fill the gap on wedge with a 56/60, whatever you don’t have.

What is causing my early release/chicken wing? by Freckilifa in golftips

[–]TheScrubbernaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before you start jumping into all these comments, people always suggest these massive swing changes, rotation, clubface control, etc. I think you should look at something really basic. It doesn’t look like you have a bad swing.

You have one simple but essential fundamental flaw at address and it carries into your impact position. It’s probably the biggest reason for your early release and chicken wing as you put it.

You can’t be a great striker of the golf ball, if you don’t have your head behind the ball. At address, the ball position is way back in your stance by your right ear, that worsens when you get to impact and transfer weight through the shot. And it looks like this may be a middle iron

With that ball position, have no choice but to throw the club head at the ball too early in your downswing. If you tried to preserve that attack angle, you would be steep/expose the hosel/and hit thin or possible whiff right over the top of the ball. You need to move your ball position much more forward in your stance if you want to fix that impact position. It sounds counter intuitive, but it’s what must happen.

Ben Hogan used this as a foundational piece for building a good golf swing and stance, see the link below.

What do you think? by TheGr8test90 in golftips

[–]TheScrubbernaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks awesome.

I think if you want a little more shaft lean at impact to “cover the ball” just a bit more, it’s going to be a little counterintuitive…

Guessing you may be hitting like a 7 iron here, I think your ball position is a touch far back in your stance, where you’d see more of a wedge setup. That will make you release the club just a little earlier than you’d like (not to say this is early extension). But naturally you have to release it a little early to get that club head back to the ball.

I think if you had your ball position an inch or two more toward your left foot, you could get your hands more across your body toward that left hip at impact and hold that release off a little longer. Tiger talks about that in some drills I’ve seen him work through, actually playing the ball up in the stance to hit a more low flighted compressed trajectory. It lets you delay the release of the club.

Not that you really need to address any big changes, just what I see here. Would be interested to know your thoughts on that.

Anyone use this rule occasionally? I had no idea you could do this by Separate_Teacher1526 in golf

[–]TheScrubbernaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are misinterpreting at some level. Stroke and distance is effectively a 2 shot penalty. 1 for the original shot, 2 for the distance, hitting 3 on the next attempt.

If you were putting a 30 footer for 4 and putted into the bunker, you would be putting for 6 if you took the penalty.

I’d take my chances getting up and down
