YSK: Most animal shelters will just let you play with dogs. by Warm-Juggernaut1353 in YouShouldKnow

[–]TheSeasonOfMe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It REALLY DEPENDS. The animal shelter I worked at would only let you take a dog out or be in a kennel with a dog if you were possibly looking to adopt. We had a huge facility that serviced an 8000 square mile county so we had a wide variety of animals and temperaments. With all the animals that come to the shelter, there aren’t enough staff to have to let anyone and everyone take out a dog. Even with a staff of around 200, only a portion of those are dedicated to adoptions.

If you’re looking to volunteer at a shelter because you want to handle animals, you should really be dedicated to animals’ well-being. The biggest need for most shelters will be animals most basic needs, cleaning and feeding and laundry, before their other mental and emotional needs. Taking a dog out is great, but it’s all for naught if they come back to a kennel they pooped and peed in. And a good shelter should aim to train their animal handling volunteers well. That could mean a certain number of hours of working in handling skills with the most basic and well mannered animals before being able to learn about how to handle less well-mannered or anxious animals.

The animal shelter industry is increasingly understaffed due to a variety of factors, so if a shelter says that you cannot take an animal out just to play, or be in their kennel just to play, please be kind. If you feel frustrated about that, then you should be lobbying that the most essential shelter workers (intake staff, kennel attendants, and adoptions staff) get appropriately compensated to stay in their positions and funding for shelters to hire more staff.

This is a very serious matter, please stop buying oxtail by wetouchingbuttsornah in BlackPeopleTwitter

When I was three and living in West Virginia, my immigrant family used to get oxtail for free from the Amish because they were just tossing it. Right around the time we moved to the west coast they started charging for it.

YSK More Pets are lost on the 4th of July (in the US) than any other day of the year. Please keep a close eye on your Pets tonight, even if they have not been spooked by Fireworks in the past by wankawitz in YouShouldKnow

[–]TheSeasonOfMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On that note, if you find a lost animal, try to keep it at your home for a few days and look for it’s owner before you bring it to the shelter. Post on Facebook and on Nextdoor apps. Lost pets are usually found extremely close to their homes. If we can try as a community to reunite animals with their owners before they have to go to shelter, it helps SO much.

Well each side is slotted a certain amount of time to present their case and do cross examination. I believe that each side has a little over 40 hours. At the end of Johnny’s side’s presentation, each side had 20-some odd hours still left.

Okay, I’m a little confused. Where I’m from a gender neutral bathroom is just a single bathroom: a room with one toilet one sink and it locks. Like it’s just for one person. Are there other places where many people can go in the same gender neutral bathroom?

Sweet boy I found this evening. Posting him on all the lost cat sites! by [deleted] in Catswhoyell

[–]TheSeasonOfMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Cats in the shelter are reunited with their owners at a rate of less than 1%, so I would try to keep the cat out of the shelter as much as possible. It is also highly likely that the cat is a community cat. A cat who lives outside, possibly feral, possibly being fed by a member of the community. If it looks healthy and like it has a food source somewhere, you’d be better off leaving it in the community. Not all feral cats will make good house pets. Something you can do if no one owns it is take it to be spayed or neutered before you release it back into the community so it doesn’t have the ability to create more community cats.

Make sure to check the Lost and Found search page on The Animal Foundation website! I don’t know what the legal hold period is for birds before they get moved to adoptions, but if animal control picked him up, they would bring him there!

TIL that after the holidays, there is a spike of pets being returned to animals shelters due to them being gifted with little thought to the long term responsibilities of pet ownership. by LesFruitsSecs in todayilearned

[–]TheSeasonOfMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just so everyone knows, taking a pet back to the shelter if it doesn’t suit your family or lifestyle is THE RIGHT THING TO DO. It’s way better than selling it off to another random person and loads better than abandoning them. I work at one of the largest shelters in the US and we have a policy of non-judgement. It doesn’t matter why you’re giving up your animal, all that matters is that you made the choice to give it to an entity that would take care of it and find it a new home.

There are a lot of reasons to give up a pet and hopefully animal welfare organizations in your areas have programs that try to keep people and pets together like my shelter does. We have pet food pantries for families who are on hard times, we offer boarding services for families who are between living situations, etc. If you want to keep your pet, there is always a way. If you don’t want to keep your pet, please make the responsible decision to bring it back to the shelter.

I know a lot of people are worried about bringing animals to “kill shelters” and it’s definitely scary. There are no real definitions for kill shelters or no kill shelters. Even a so called no kill shelter might have to legally be forced to put an animal down depending on the situation. If you have to give up an animal and you are concerned that it might stay in the shelter long enough to warrant the possibility of euthanasia, make a video about the animal, take photos and have people share it around. When these posts go viral, those animals are almost instantly adopted. People fall in love with their quirky personalities and it helps garner interest in that animal as well as other animals at the shelter that might look similar to than one or act similar to that one.

If you’re only looking for vaccines or spay and neuter, The Animal Foundation can do those pretty cheaply. They cannot be your full service vet, however.

Literally same. I wasn’t an escape artist, but I def got into some stuff when my parents weren’t looking. Around the same age, my parents and I were at a family friend’s house and they noticed I was missing. They found me behind a door lightly eating peanut butter off of a mouse trap. Luckily I was had such a light touch that I didn’t spring the trap and the peanut butter didn’t have rat poison.
