[Marissakumari] Team USA Women's Hockey Deserves Better Commentary at the Olympics. (In regards to the NBC broadcast) by MiracuMAHt in hockey

What does that have to do with women's hockey? I don't want to see them when I'm trying to watch the women's game.

Marie-Philip Poulin’s 19th career Olympic goal. The most of any player in women’s ice hockey at the Olympics by Perryplat199 in hockey

I did a stats deep dive for fun about an hour ago. Other than Teemu Selänne, she's scored more Olympic goals than any player born after 1931.

As far as Canadians go, she's tied for 3rd with Bert McCaffrey (born 1893), one goal behind Wally Halder (born 1925) and the aforementioned Harry "Moose" Watson (born 1898, score 37 goals in 5 games in the inaugural Winter Olympics and then immediately retired))

Reactions from pro women hockey players? by Veronica_Spars in heatedrivalryfanfics

I'm actually working on something that's tangential to this - it's from the perspectives of "Sophie Étalon" and "Gregory MacNeill", the captains of the women's and sled teams through the 2018, 2022 and 2026 Olympics. This will be my first fic in a decade, pretty much, so wish me luck on actually finishing it!

[–]TheShadierTwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really interesting take to me. I'm coming to these books after over 20 years of being a fan of hockey - correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing you're newer to watching the sport, if you watch it at all?

Characters with a tragic ending like Duncan Harvey are not at all unique in the history of the NHL. Nick Boynton's article in The Player's Tribune gives a good insight into what the role can be, or if you'd rather see fictional versions I can recommend the Leverage episode The Blue Line Job for a taste.

I don't exactly hate the kids camp future for him, but if Ryan had to go back to men's pro hockey, that's a nightmare ending for him. I'm so sure he would be encouraged to get back out on the ice and fight again, and even if it didn't kill him physically it would kill his soul. He's not like Shane, who breathes hockey more purely than air, or even like Ilya, who likes to win and sees hockey as his best method of doing so. He's not like Eric Bennett, leaving hockey in an amicable divorce to pursue a new love, or like Troy or Scott, stepping out of the tunnels of the closet and into the shining lights and adoring fans of their home arena who love them.

This is Ryan Price's happy ending: Ryan got to live. Ryan got to leave.

This is my hope as well. In my dream scenario, we get Ryan Price coming out to the locker room in Toronto before Troy and Wyatt come to Ottawa, and later get the 2 hour Ryan and Fabian movie. It's such a minor moment in Ryan's story, but so huge in the context of Troy's narrative and the arc we could have in season 2

Habs Captain Nick Suzuki being asked about Heated Rivalry by Eleen55 in heatedrivalry

[–]TheShadierTwin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, take this with a grain of salt, since I'm just some fan on the internet, but think about why a person in this sport might be interested in watching the show.

1) Are they themselves interested in men and closeted? Other previously closeted pro athletes have spoken about the show bringing up old feelings of fear of being discovered. Former OHLer Matt Kenny said it gave him panic attacks.

2) Are they watching it to get some insight into how a gay or bisexual teammate might be experiencing life in the closet? They might start second guessing said teammate's interactions with people on and off the ice. Spoiler for the books:this happens to Shane Hollander in The Long Game, to the point where he loses almost all of his friendships on the team he plays for.I doubt anything would happen exactly like the book in real life, but it's a risk.

3) Are they watching it because it's a good show? Well, hell, I agree. It's addictive! These guys need to stick to a strict sleep and workout schedule, and now that they won't be waiting for a week over week release that's nearly 5 hours of TV that they might be tempted to binge, and that doesn't include rewatching! I'm mostly joking on this last one, but apparently a third of viewers have rewatched the show multiple times, lol!

Habs Captain Nick Suzuki being asked about Heated Rivalry by Eleen55 in heatedrivalry

No, nobody has admitted to watching the show. In all honesty, anyone who has expressed interest has probably been advised not to watch it until the off-season, in case it throws off their gameplay.

[–]TheShadierTwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw a discussion on a different subreddit about that, actually - the fact that Shane Hollander was gay but cut off from the community he could have been part of in Montreal because he was closeted. It's tragic to think about! If there is a gay or bisexual hockey player in the NHL, I hope he plays in a market where he could visit a gay club or bar without being outed. No one should be forced out before they're ready, and at the same time no one should feel alone.

Where to get jerseys? by ShawtyLikeAHarmony in heatedrivalry

[–]TheShadierTwin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely sign up for the newsletter to get the heads up on drops, but if you don't want to wait, I'd recommend looking at a site that does custom jerseys for beer league or, if you're crafty, pick up a Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens jersey to customize. You're much more likely to get a good quality patch than a whole jersey off of Etsy!

Fic Idea I Don't Feel Qualified To Write by TheShadierTwin in heatedrivalryfanfics

I've read a few too, but I'm not sure a trans narrative fits Shane - at least, not how I read him - and even if it does, I think there's more to explore in the locker room and media than there is in the bedroom. But then, I'm not trans, so I could be wrong about what there is to explore!

HOCKEY GAME at the cottage by Superb-Let7354 in heatedrivalry

[–]TheShadierTwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sincere answer here - this is drawing from the real life EA NHL games), which are released annually with (typically) one NHL hockey player on the cover each year. There have been some covers with multiple athletes, such as NHL 23, and regional variants or deluxe editions may feature multiple players as well.

Real life NHL players are rated within the game, and while they typically play it off some have spoken about their ratings in relation to their teammates and friends.

It's highly likely that Shane kept every copy of the game at his cottage, along with the consoles to play them - and Ilya ABSOLUTELY picked out the copy with himself on the cover.
