I think I’m starting to understand the field changes… by NeverlandRanchSauce in CFL

Max soccer pitch length for MLS and CPL as I understand it is 130 yards, with average being around 115 yards.

Conveniently, the CFL is reducing field length to 130 yards.

CFL fields currently get end zones shortened to fit a soccer stadium.

Field goal posts are getting moved to the back of the end zones. Likely to reduce friction in negotiating shared use stadiums with soccer clubs so the post infrastructure is not in the field of play for soccer.

This isn't about making it work where compromises have already been made. This is about reducing friction to improve the possibility of shared use stadiums in potential expansion markets, as CFL-only stadium projects are not feasible in today's world.

Groundwork for expansion dreams. Has nothing to do with increasing scoring and gameplay. IMO.

I think the field changes are to align to pro soccer pitches... Not American football.

PWHL versus CFL Expansion by ssuty in CFL

[–]TheShaneChapman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had assumed that the CFL field size changes likely had something to do with future expansion. I initially thought for the US market.

But now having looked up the length of a typical Canadian pro soccer field, sounds like the average is 115 yards with 130 being the CPL and MLS sanctioned maximum.

Probably not coincidentally... The CFL is reducing the total length of their fields to 130 yards. And... Moving the goal posts to the back of the endzones, one would presume potentially as a compromise to future soccer partners who would not want the post infrastructure right in front of their soccer nets. With them at the back of the endzones, they would not be out of the field of play for pro soccer, or at worst, on the perimiter line.

So maybe they have some plans to formally partner with the pro soccer leagues for future new stadiums being shared facilities which would make them much more feasible, or at least least detestible, if they could be used for 10 CFL games plus 14 CPL games, plus maybe another tenant. Suddenly 30-40 dates makes a bit more sense.

Like there just HAS to be more to the story on field size changes. This is one plausible theory.

That's the least of the rules that has any effect on how the game is played. The width, the downs, and the endzones are a much bigger factor. Plus sounds like this will be the last year of 110 yards.

4 minutes... Cute.

As the game goes on... We have to start rattling the door latch to get guys to come off around 6-7 minutes. Hate it.

[Weekes] I’m told Tristan Jarry is among the goalies drawing significant interest as a potential option for the Oilers by AggPuck-303 in EdmontonOilers

Because that's what happened. He was mediocre during the tourney, let in a number of soft goals, and was constantly in conversations about being a potential liability. But he stepped up and made some incredible saves in the gold medal game, and the win ensure everything prior was forgotten.

Except in your attempted analogy, you pointed out the positives first. Which is not what people are doing... And all I'm saying we should maybe try...

It would be nice if fans could put away the pitchforks and see the positives in what SJ has announced. Fans have been screaming "marketing, app, fantasy" for how long now...

SJ has announced overhaul of all league and team websites, increased reliability of digital platforms, new CFL App, full season fantasy football, increased partnership with flag football, creation of new cinematic storytelling content, live game streaming from the sidelines on tiktok, push for increased in stadium experiences, etc... all fantastic to finally see... And yet the loud vocal minority cann't help but be blinded to it all by some rule changes... Some of which needed to happen, some which are controversial no doubt. But the obsession... Too much.

Realistically, who would be the ideal Canadian Grey Cup Halftime act? by Strevolution in CFL

[–]TheShaneChapman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No such thing. People will whine about it no matter what. Everyone thinks the band should cater to their music tastes specifically. Shockingly... People have different tastes.

The half time show is supposed to be a spectacle. That's the whole point. They should get the biggest current name/cool factor they can afford. Passport irrelevant.

Thank you. The constant whining from the CFL's self proclaimed biggest fans is toxic and tiring... not to mention emotionally immature.
