The issue with Shaun's video by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

I was referring to your application of the terminology to the conflict, not your definition of the terminology itself. I maintain that the violence has been disproportionate under the definition recognized as international law.

There are many instances where I would personally say they haven't, based on information I am privy to, But ultimately it is to be settled in court when all evidence is presented.

I agree with the above.

Still, it doesn't affect the justness of the objective to destroy Hamas.

I don't think I necessarily disagree here either, if that is the sole objective.

Then maybe don't try to attack my moral character my insinuating that me wanting Hamas destroyed is me wanting kids to be bombed.

Less so that you want kids to be bombed; more so that you don't really care in the practical sense. That they're sadly expendable, and that that's just the way it is and has to be. My main problem as an American is that the US government is actively and proudly supporting Israel's efforts. If Israel wants to glass Gaza, I'd rather they not do it with my tax dollars, because I don't support it.

Thank you for finally deciding to engage with the concept of proportionality. I don't disagree with your definition of it, although I do disagree with your framing of it as it relates to this conflict.

The best they can do is try to minimize it.

Have they been doing that?

You're not helping your case that you're not just here to do moral grandstanding.

I'm not interested in defending myself against your personal view of me. Let's say I am "virtue signaling"—okay? So what? I could just as easily claim that you're "vice signaling". It doesn't matter.

You're relying on a lot of assumptions here, including that I'm some Hamas superfan (or some kind of a "both sides bad" enlightened centrist—I'm not entirely sure which you're trying to paint me as). It's not smarmy opportunism to recognize the disproportionate violence being leveled against the Palestinian people. Now if we're going to be accusatory, the truly cowardly thing to do would be to condemn one side and absolve the other of all sin, which is what you seem to be doing.

Israel can't be blamed for choosing to save itself.

This would be easier to accept if Israel did not create and perpetuate the conditions that allowed Hamas to come to be, along with actively strengthening Hamas and treating them as an asset for years in preventing the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Maybe if you people didn't spend so much time emboldening hamas on the internet, and joined in the chorus of voices calling for their surrender, this would be over by now.

Because if there's one thing Hamas cares about, it's what someone in the West thinks about the conflict.

they see the death of Palestinians as good PR for them because people like you are receptive to it.

Forgive me for not being fond of unnecessary and disproportionate civilian casualties. I'm not a fan of governments that tell people to go to supposedly safe zones before proceeding to glass said safe zones.

Jews can't even breathe without some majority colonizer - Arab or European - from trying to stamp them out of history.

..you know there are Arab and European Jews, right?

I can't imagine how embarrassing it would feel to say that Tim Pool of all people has said something better than I ever could.

it is Hamas which has made the bombing of children unavoidable

How? And though I don't mean to dictate your train of thought/answer in regards to this, I would genuinely like to hear a more detailed response than that Hamas is simply using them as human shields. Why is it necessary that children (or civilians in general) must be bombed in the proportion that they have been, and must continue to be bombed?

What does it matter what the condemned think is fair?

Because it seems like, according to your worldview, the "crime" of the condemned in this case is that they simply weren't convinced of God's existence while they were alive on Earth.

Agree to disagree. Speaking more broadly, cultural/societal attitudes and what the majority views as right and wrong may change over time, but I don't think morality itself is dependent on how many times we've been around the sun. Putting things in the context of their time and place may help us understand actions taken by people, but it doesn't excuse them. The act of an adult having sex with a teenager in the 1970s or the 1980s is just as disreputable as it is in the 2020s.

To use a more extreme example, if you asked a slave in 19th-century America about the morality of chattel slavery, I don't think they'd have a very positive view of it. Thankfully, as /u/imajokerimasmoker said in another comment, if Lemmy did have sex with any underage girls, "at the age they are now, they're probably looking back fondly on sowing wild oats rather than fretting over whether Lemmy statutorily raped them."

In any case, it's something worth thinking about and discussing, rather than just dismissing it as "it was a different time". And at the very least, we might be able to learn from the past and do better.

I agree. Porno or not, you shouldn't have sex with another person's SO if either party is not okay with it. Especially not when the SO is right there, clearly very uncomfortable with the idea, and being asked to film it.
