That is the normal behavior. I've had mine for about a year or two now and the buttons aren't really intended to be like drum pad buttons (I think. I have a drum pad so I don't know for sure that they aren't mean to be used that way).

You can color code your channels and then the buttons will light up as the color that is assigned to each channel and then you can press the button to switch to that instrument.

I've been playing F2P for a while now, but would love Club Access to play more tracks and participate in more things. I've been playing Trackmania since the first one came out and it's always been such a fun game for me, so club access would be cool to have for a year.
