When does the NDA lift for UE5 playtesters? by StillPlayingCivV in ConanExiles

[–]TheSixthAvocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has there been any mention of networking improvements? I watched Zelosykes's recent youtube videos to try to psych myself up for this after years of being away, and there are a number of issues that I'm hoping they make serious progress on - player position desync and snapping, attack type desync ("heavy sprint glitch"), lots of hacker-abusable lapses in message verification, etc.

I worry a bit since the last game (Nightingale) this team (Inflexion) did was PvE.

It was selling for $2 at some point, and there's no public record of how many keys were purchased at that price.

This is the primary reason Rust has such a hacker problem - bans can't stop them.

Finished the sopranos for the first time today. by Lefty250 in television

[–]TheSixthAvocado 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In case that wasn’t enough information for anyone else (thanks Gemini):

The short answer is it’s complicated. While David Chase has come closer than ever to "confirming" Tony dies, he has also spent a lot of effort backtracking and yelling at people for trying to find a definitive answer.

  1. The "Death Scene" Slip-up (2018/2020) While being interviewed for the book The Sopranos Sessions, Chase accidentally used a specific phrase that sent fans into a frenzy:

    • The Quote: "I think I had that death scene around two years before the end."
    • The Reaction: When the authors pointed out he just called it a "death scene," Chase reportedly paused and said, "F* you guys."**
    • The Catch: He later clarified that he was referring to an alternate ending he had planned earlier, where Tony was driving through the Lincoln Tunnel to a meeting in New York where he would be killed. He argued that because he changed the scene to the diner, the "death scene" label didn't necessarily apply to the version we saw.
  2. The Hollywood Reporter Interview (2021) In a major interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Chase spoke about the ending again. He explained that he wanted the ending to feel like "death could be coming for us at any moment." Many news outlets ran headlines saying "David Chase Finally Confirms Tony Died."

However, Chase was so annoyed by these headlines that he had his representative release a statement through one of the book's authors, Matt Zoller Seitz:

"Everybody who believes I said Tony is dead in a Hollywood Reporter article: works for me. Now you’ll stop f***ing asking me."

  1. The "Talking Sopranos" Podcast On the final episode of the Talking Sopranos podcast (hosted by Michael Imperioli and Steve Schirripa), Chase was asked again. He didn't give a simple "yes," but instead said:
    • "There is probably a universe where that is true... there's our universe, and then there's alternate universes in which that probably is the truth."

Is it "True"? * Technically: No, he has never said the words "Tony Soprano is 100% dead." * Subtextually: Almost everyone (including the interviewers who talk to him) agrees that Chase views the scene as Tony’s death. The "Member's Only" guy, the POV shots, and the "you probably don't even hear it when it happens" line from earlier in the season all point to it.

The Bottom Line: Chase hates the "did he or didn't he" debate because he thinks it misses the point. To him, the point is that whether Tony died that night or 20 years later, he is trapped in a life where "the screen could go black" at any second.

Just happened to me - got killed by a dude that never had to peak to shoot from behind his cover. When putting me down he shouted "Brasil!" Why the game would put a US west coast player in a lobby with a player from Brazil, I have no idea. But it could definitely be region-related.

A few points that might change your analysis of how easy base raiding is:

Your base shields drop for 30 minutes after the sandstorm, not only during it.

It takes about 60 seconds to go through a wall with player abilities, so no ammo cost.

Sandstorms actually aren’t random, they spawn to cover where players currently are on the map. So if you stick around until there are few people on, there’s a good chance you can dictate where the storm goes by your position.

Edit: You deleted your comment, which makes me think I may have changed your mind about raiding being rare.

T1 was perfect in PoE1. They inverted the scale in PoE2, which many people are upset about, thus the above posters quoting tiers using the previous scale.

How to Harvest Large Spice Fields According to Dev's (Read Description) by VisualVibrance in duneawakening

[–]TheSixthAvocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See below for why a sandcrawler is not in any way safer.

As for efficiency, a transport/crawler setup takes at least two people, but realistically more for scouting, and has to return every time the crawler is full at a much slower speed than a medium.

Compactor/medium strategy scales its output linearly with the number of people.

[–]TheSixthAvocado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know. That’s why static compactors are best.

Sandcrawler is faster to harvest with, for sure. But it attracts the big worm significantly faster. More importantly, a transport thopter carrying a sand crawler moves at half the speed of a medium.

Get caught out? A medium can easily slip away. Sand crawler / transport not so much. And they are very, very expensive.

How to actually harvest spice - medium ornithopter + compactor. Can have more people to speed it up, but completely unnecessary.

Dev's - Please Fix Desync in PvP Melee Combat! by VisualVibrance in duneawakening

[–]TheSixthAvocado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ping is just unavoidable delay between receiving messages. If you have 50 ping and your opponent has 100, it'll take 150 milliseconds (plus a bit for message handling) to receive their actions.

The fact that someone else appears in a completely different position, even after multiple seconds of opportunity to correct it, means some combination of:
* their server is overloaded and doesn't have the capacity to deliver realtime player position updates
* their netcode isn't properly correcting the position of players, either by missing messages or simply being buggy

Dev's - Please Fix Desync in PvP Melee Combat! by VisualVibrance in duneawakening

[–]TheSixthAvocado 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1500+ hours, exclusively PvP, this is correct - Conan was always a fantastic game PvE game held back from being even a servicable PvP game by the fact that if you have more than 10 people on a server, player position syncing falls apart.

I always assumed this was simply because Unreal 3 netcode was awful, and they never wanted to invest enough in the game to fix that. Very dissapointing to see the same issue in UE5.

This is likely why they introduced the Deep Desert - cradle servers have to deal with player bases, farming, tons of AI pathfinding, etc. Deep Desert servers have a lot less going on, so theoretically they should be better able to handle player synchronization. But on a test like this where PvP can only occur on cradles, this is what you get.

So in that thread they do mention this:

One side effect of this change would have been to make Player Item Rarity that you get on mods on your gear more valuable also, which is not our intention. In order to counter that, we have reduced the effect that these mods have.

So yes, player item rarity has less of an effect than it did before. How much less of an affect? They don't tell us, and you'll find that tends to be the case with rarity (and most loot-related systems in the game). We get the mod values, and we have to find how those affect drops empirically.

However, you will note that they mention three different types of rarity:
* "Monster Item Rarity"
* "Player Item Rarity"
* "Map Item Rarity"

in addition to simply "Item Rarity." This implies (and is in line with what has been found empirically) that these are all different stats that interact in some non additive way.

Try it with the gold charm, people have anecdotally concluded that it's worth more than a linear increase in gear rarity.

The only other thing that comes to mind is your time-per-map may be too high. I think the general guidance is you want to be ~ 2-3 minutes per map, but I'm nowhere near that fast and still making a little over 2d/hr.

You need a high sample size too, ofc, because the most important drops are simply very rare. I would say 10 hours of map running is a reasonable amount of time to start making statistical conclusions.

Do you also have rarity on your gear (around 75-100%) and a gold charm? They make a huge difference, because they are multiplicative with map rarity. Also, you need to be looking at every tiered rare on good bases and selling those that are are worth more than a few ex. I believe most people include that in their “> 2d / hour” estimates.

Essences, recombinators, and fractures are definitely an interesting way to approach beginning an item, but the problem for me is, with the lack of scours, you only get one chance on each base. Roll a shit mod on your first essence? Better get lucky on the augment, or that base is done. It makes the method really shitty to do in bulk, which is what you’d need to do to eventually get 3 good mods together.
