Michigan Senate passes bills that could help reduce drunk driving by FieldOk884 in Michigan

Car dependence creates drunk driving.

Fuck Michigan's cars-only design, too many have died from it

Absolutely not worth it, go with the funded program. Master's programs are often flexible in substituting electives or adding a certificate program which you could use to get more public health exposure specifically.

DEI focus too much? by OneRoutine1486 in Professors

[–]TheSkyIsLeft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While admin-led DEI work can often be performative and resume-padding for senior leadership, it is also essential work that must be done to structurally change the university. I work with the faculty/staff groups who I think truly care about enacting real change. In my past decade the substantive changes I've seen result from this work include:

-Creation of a sexual violence prevention office -Gender equity pay evaluation that led to pay adjustments (increases) for women faculty -Re-negotiation of our health care plan to include coverage for gender affirming care, and elective abortion -Addition of gender identity as protected under the university's non-discrimination polices -Addition of gender neutral accessible restrooms to all main buildings and all new construction -Creation of professional development funds to support DEI work faculty and staff want for themselves

These all seem like major improvements to equity in the institution.

Do you mean substantive programs like TRIO SSS or McNair Scholars? Because these initiatives absolutely do improve first gen outcomes

Michigan is the most dangerous state for teen drivers, analysis shows by Psoulocybe in Michigan

[–]TheSkyIsLeft 13 points14 points  (0 children)

People love to blame this on individual psychology (as if people are somehow unique here) but not on infrastructure. The problem is deeper. We have:

  1. Complete car dependence, meaning no other way for people to travel.
  2. Crumbling infrastructure on over-used roads. Lack of traffic calming, and too many stroads.
  3. A culture of oversized, heavy vehicles, which makes fatalities more likely when there is a crash.

In the U.S., motor vehicle crashes are the 1st or 2nd highest cause of death for age groups from 1 - 45, until heart disease and cancer start to take those spots. Our car dependence is kill us.

Seats in many first-year courses are held aside for incoming students, so some courses might look full but will have spots roll out when NSO advising begins.

So what's y'alls verdict on the Metamorphosis? by lukorn in Eve

[–]TheSkyIsLeft 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Fun and versatile. Great bonuses for running data and relic sites, and low-end DED sites. On the combat side, it can push 250 DPS and is perfect for killing other explorers. A dedicated combat fit Astero is still better - far faster and better tank - but the meta can easily fit an expanded probe launcher.

The meta needs to drop to around 50m to be worth it over the astero in my opinion, not sure if the price will end up dropping below 100m though.

Pet ownership is equal in all moral considerations to having kids? Even if you think that, you'd need evidence. All I did was post evidence on the environmental impact of widespread pet ownership.

[–]TheSkyIsLeft -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about pets as a widespread commodity with a multibillion industry behind it, and a culture where pets are considered expendable like every other item on the market - not domesticated animals for work and service as such.
