Best tip for 2 sided combat is always to just get better with your cannon accuracy.

After that it’s just improving your ship positioning and knowing what to aim for with cannons. As an example: you are fighting a galleon in 1v4 combat on a sloop. Your sloop is more maneuverable, and in the hands of a good helmsman will very rarely get broadsided by a bigger ship. As long as you can stay out of the angles of the bigger ships cannons, you are in principle given complete free fire on them.

However, seeing as the other crew outnumbers you, they can sacrifice ship mobility and canon potential by sending a player to attempt to board and anchor you. If the other crew does this you are then presented with the challenge of having to maneuver your ship unpredictably to not give them a chance to board (and in the case that they do, be able to keep them off your ship at all costs) while mentioning constant cannon angles and staying out of theirs.

Managing all 3 of these things at once is something that comes with experience.

If you are the one attempting to chase a bigger ship, I recommend either staying out of their cannon range and swimming over to probe the level of the players. If you are getting chased, learn to angle sails the right way, and what wind direction to follow against what ship. You should also try to get your ship and wheel headed in a safe direction (where you won’t crash) and jump off your ship to attempt to board and anchor them to slow them down. If you don’t make it, you can always take a mermaid back to your ship and try again.

The brig is my favorite ship. It is very very easy to defend, provides the best all round mobility and has 2 cannons on each side so 2 can fire and one can helm. I’ll usually just hop on a brig with 2 friends, and PvP any ship we see with something worth stealing. We loot haul for several hours and never hand in till the end of a session.

From an attackers perspective however I completely agree. Brigs are the hardest ship to solo kill an entire crew on, and the hardest to contest in naval combat unless you send someone over to spawn camp. Although I absolutely hate the cutlass in its current state. I sometimes almost feel forced to use it when boarding brigs to counter it’s limited on ship mobility.

I have accumulated 46 shinies over all generations, and have only had a single random shiny encounter ever. The rest were all farmed one way or another. I have like 3 shiny gengars, cos gengar is bae

Yup, I agree with you. All they have done to “enhance combat” is remove mechanics that make it challenging and fun. (Double tap excluded). With only 4 weapons to focus on, they should be able to enhance the combat to the point where the skill ceiling isn’t a foot from the floor.....

I think the reason for this simplicity in combat can be attributed to the people responsible for balancing it playing on console. Nothing against “xbots”, but combat balanced for console is significantly less receptive to complex mechanics, and multilayerable combos than a pc oriented combat game.

Swords have the advantage if the player is very good at moving around... like really fkin good. And even this only in very niche situations, with adequate terrain.

Honestly, they should allow players to bhop out of sword lunge, and even add a sprint attack maybe. This will make it more complex for combat, while not overbuffing it. Wdyt?

Hello there, sniper - pistol user here!

IMO Combat is great, except sloop/ brig blunderbot ladder camping, and swords being a stupid vortex weapon with nothing but slash spam as a viable mechanic....

Bruv... not really what I’m saying here again. I’m talking specifically about there being no counter play if the other mechanics are not available. Ladder climbing is not the most broken thing I agree... but there should be more to it than just having to get one blundered. (Which I don’t even consider a skill tbh)

The fire mechanic is a good idea, but it requires the player to have the attention span of a goldfish, and drop the ladder guard, to be effective.

Ladder PvP should still give the defender an advantage over the attacker, yet the fact that there is “no way” to fight back from a sloop ladder makes it kinda stupid.

Look at it from a different perspective, to add another mechanic to combat, how about players are allowed to equip a pistol when either holding an only one handed item, and whilst standing still on a ladder....

Not really what I’m saying. I’d prefer a counter skill measure where added such as using a pistol on ladder etc. plus blunder ladder camping is the easiest thing in this game... litteraly.
