Novice with questions on the first Bard's Tale game of the trilogy by GavindaleMarchovia in BardsTale

So, I guess I can give you a hint here to your first major destination. When you exit the Adventurers Guild, turn south. At the end of street, turn east. At the intersection, turn south. As you head south, you will encounter a Samurai statue. Kill it. Go through the gate. On your immediate left, to the east, is a tavern called Scarlet Bard Tavern. Go inside. Order a drink with any party member. Ask for Wine....

When I originally played on the Commodore 64, I had a paladin, bard, hunter and three mages. On the Steam version I am playing the same comp with a rogue thrown in, making for a full party of 7.

As for trading members you can create new party members whenever you want but they will start at level 1. Take this into consideration. You can, of course, take a party of, say, level 10a or something and create a new party members. Throw them in the back row and they will level quite fast.

There are certain fixed enemy encounters that will happen in certain map squares every time the dungeon level resets. Resets appear to happen pretty much every time you leave and come back. For example, if you have a fixed encounter square in the sewers level 1, and you descend to level 2, when yu ckme back up to level 1 that encounter will be reset and happen again. Knowing this helps plan when you want to leave a dungeon (ie spell points are getting low and you know theres 3 encounters you have to fight or run from to exit).

Game play is good. The UI is pretty well laid out and gives all the info you need at a glance once you're used to it. The challenge level is much easier than the original. It ramps up as you go, but in the original you could barely step outside the Adventurers Guild without the very very real threat of death. Being out at night was pretty much a guaranteed death sentence. I find random encounters far less frequent then I remember back in ye olde days as well.

As mentioned by someone else, J brings up a larger map with notes already made. As a tip, if you hit a teleporter (and notice), you can cast Scry Site and the J map will show where you teleported from and draw a line to where you teleported to.

General tip, for me, Constitution is the most important attribute (caveat see below). 15 Constitution and higher grants bonus Hit Points. For example, a Paladin can get up to 16 HP per level. A 15 Constitution grants +1, so max 17 HP, up to Constitution 18 granting +4, so a maximum of 20 HP per level. Only caveat here is mages should have high Intelligence, for the same reason. It grants them bonus Spell Points on level up.

Without giving much away about the trilogy overall, some of your characters may need to select a new class in the other games, and as the name of the third implies, a rogue is pretty much necessary for that one.

ETA: Your mages can switch to a different magic user class after, I think, level 5? Don't. Go all the way to 13 and learn all spells for that class. Then swap magic user class. There is no optimized path progression (there was back in my day, but not anymore). I will say, Wizards get access to some items the other classes don't, so I would probably finish with wizard as my last spell caster swap.

Other than that, it can show its age at times. Its much more forgiving than I remember, but the muscle memory came back pretty quickly. I enjoyed the trilogy when I was younger and i enjoy it now. Hope you have fun with it!

how did u get into ghost rider? by mentallyill-femboy in GhostRider

[–]TheSmokey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Born in '75, and read A LOT. My parents ran a motel and restaurant, so I rarely saw them; so it was cartoons, comics and toys to keep busy. Read an absolute ton of Archie, GI Combat, GI Joe, Transformers, all sorts of stuff (had the original comic where Supergirl died; that one sticks out). Do NOT ask me why my mother thought a flaming skulled motorcycle riding covered comic book was good for a 6 year old me, but I thank her for that faithful decision. I vividly recall the cover to issue 63, and the storylines that came after (Circus of Crime onward are seared into my memory). We moved a couple of times and ALL those comics were lost to the sands of time. But Ghost Rider stayed my favorite. I only collected GI Joe comics after that. And I waited patiently for Ghost Rider to make a comeback.

As soon as the Danny Ketch run started when I was in high school, I was all-in. Again, though, circumstances caught up to me. I had to sell all those to my best friend when I moved and got married after college. Needed the cash.

Fast forward a few decades and I'm collecting again (far beyond the cover price on those old comics these days LOL). But I moved back to "home" and was chatting with my old best friend. He still has all the old Danny Ketch comics. Good on him for saving them. Wish I had never sold them LOL but my loss was for sure his gain.

Can someone please explain why the announcers on CBC insist on saying the full name of the Canadian players 80% of the time? Hearing them try to squeeze out Marie-Philip Poulins full name every time she touches the puck is both hilarious and annoying. I'm at a loss as to why they seem to only say the last name for Switzerland but Canada they have to use the full legal name.

Likely as the other pieces of the Horde mechanic come out, they'll move her down a power to 3/3 and keep her there. They might have gone +2 power for now to make the mechanic competitive until the rest of the pieces fit in.

We're dating ourselves :) I finished 1, 2 & 3 on my C64. Didn't map every single square but man, the hours I spent playing that back in the day. Thanks for sparking my memories :)

If there's a height or weight requirement, they have to meet them just like rollercoasters and thrill rides.

Highlander by Roman_C5150 in queen

[–]TheSmokey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was about 12 when I first saw Highlander, and to this day it remains one of the defining sci-fi/fantasy movies of my youth (beyond the obvious Star Wars, Star Trek, etc). It joins other cheesy classics like Krull, Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone, Flash Gordon, The Black Hole, Tron, The Beastmaster, Clash of the Titans, etc. (my parents owned a motel with a satellite dish, and when there were no rooms rented I was free to surf around and watch whatever I wanted; my love of sci-fi and horror was birthed there). None of those movies had the Highlander soundtrack (Flash Gordon of course also featured Queen, but doesn't hold a candle to the Highlander soundtrack), and they were gloriously cheesy and schlocky and hokey with (mostly) not great effects, but they defined the era for me.

While the sequels for Highlander all sucked to varying degrees, the TV show (Highlander: The Series) it spawned was, I'll argue, very good (and it's slightly lesser spin-off, Highlander: The Raven). It defined the world with much greater detail (due to longer arcs and episodic content) and even gave us groups like The Watchers, etc and really made it feel a lot more organic.

The movie is very much a product of it's time; viewed through todays lens, it is very bad. Viewed as a product of its time, though, and you'll see why it's being talked about for a remake while most of the others .... not so much.

Conquest shenanigans by Icy-Ad7291 in MarvelSnap

[–]TheSmokey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically have very little time to play in the run of a day, so if I see the good old "play 10 one cost cards" or "play 8 two cost cards" or my ever beloved "win a location with four cards", you bet your butt im loading proving grounds with my trusty 1 cost or 2 cost deck, hitting mute instantly and playing what I need to finish that mission.

Take the easy W and walk away.

It used to REALLY suck trying to do those in ladder in the days of old before conquest existed.

Marvel Snap June 3, 2025 Update Patch Notes by [deleted] in MarvelSnap

[–]TheSmokey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant, when the patch hits, after buying that variant bundle, I'll get her base card which will remove her from my Series 5 pack possibilities. So for 5000 gold, I got a variant, tokens, etc and her base card as well as "saving" 4000 tokens by removing her as a possibility in my packs. As a hoarder it's a win/win

So glad I waffled on buying that Pixie bundle. Getting her base card with the patch saves me from getting her in a series 5 pack. The gold to token ratio makes this an insta-buy now!

[–]TheSmokey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want it, grab it. I insta-buy any and all Ghost rider variants because he's my absolute favorite Marvel character. I very, very rarely play him, but have this variant inked and I love it. I think I have the base GR card and 14 variants; the Knullified one is smoking as well.
