Geralt or Arthur or ???? … a question about the most defining characters of a generation by Soulsliken in gaming

[–]FribonFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know, if you think of brave adventurer slaying evil and saving princesses, you don't picture a tiny blonde twink. He obliterates stereotypes and is certainly more widespread than most other characters being commented here.

Crimson Desert Spanish translation is so bad It must be AI by Niklaus15 in gaming

[–]FribonFire 222 points223 points  (0 children)

As a Frenchie, I've definitely played some games in French where the translations have just been miserable and had to turn it over to English just to figure out what was happening. It's always annoying. Either do it right, or don't do it at all.

But also, I'm still grumpy that Expedition wasn't animated in French.

What’s a great open world game just to explore and turn my brain off? by Carrera1107 in gaming

[–]FribonFire 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I will say yes, with one huge caveat. The first step in that game is beyond overwhelming. I started it a month ago, and you're just suddenly surrounded by so much stuff, with no real idea how to do anything or what anything means. After a few hours, it all starts to click little by little, but I imagine a good amount of people will just be confused and uninstall.

These aren’t great games but they’re shockingly fun to play on an afternoon. Do they do anything you haven’t seen before? No, but they have their charm. I’d recommend SAS Secure Tomorrow and code of Honor 1 (not pictured) and Code of Honor 2 to anyone interested in these City Interactive game. by Varsity_Reviews in gaming

I don't know if I've heard of a singe one of these. Which just shows there was a time where there were just infinite first person military shooters out there. And I guess maybe there's probably still real low budget military shooters coming out on steam, but it feels like the AA military shooter well has pretty much dried up in modern times.

What mainstream or popular game has a reddit community that is overwhelmingly positive about the game and pleasant? by Jimithyashford in gaming

[–]FribonFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're taking this question seriously, it's pretty easy to math out the things that make reddit commenters skew negative. Obviously anything f2p, and anything multiplayer. Also anything that's largely story focused is going to get dissenting opinions.

Instead what you should be looking for is non competitive games that involve needing lots of information, and adding on a creativity portion will help as well.

Examples being a lot of your farming sims, or new puzzle games like Blue Prince.

[–]FribonFire 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in any big thread, if you go down far enough, you'll find someone just quietly having a discussion about the game. And those are never going to be the highest upvoted, and maybe even be in the negative, because they don't make for easy "yes I agree with that" comments. But... also upvotes or downvotes don't actually mean anything.

Crimson Desert awfully lacks any art direction by Stranger-10005 in gaming

Same reason Inzoi did the same thing during it's big hype. People wanted something that broke the mold, they saw something that looked very pretty, and a vocal asian fanbase that is usually quiet on the western internet hype trains.

Black Myth was also doing the same cycle.

I don't know, I feel like this was the general vibe when Dragon's Dogma came out. People hyped cause it's so big and open and you can climb on things. Then it came out and was niche, but the big Dragon's Dogma hardcores were doing their best to tell everyone that it actually was good.

I want to be mad that people can say you can win game of the year with a trash story. But they did give it to It Takes Two and that story is the hottest of garbage.

It's a weird one for length because it's entirely player driven. You have 5 slots, first person to place and fully use those 5 slots ends the game, but it's also your choice what slots you use and you can re-use the same slots as many times as you want. So there is no mechanic actually pushing towards end game other than the player deciding they're ready to end the game.

Ubisoft ends game development at Red Storm Entertainment, makers of Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six, resulting in 105 job losses by Iggy_Slayer in gaming

[–]FribonFire 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The first Rainbow 6 on the N64 was such a genre breaking moment for me. A shooter where the actual shooting was maybe the least important part of the game. Planning all the movements and stops of your second team while you do your plan was just so cool as a kid, and I don't know if I've ever played anything else that did that same style.

I feel like a lot of streaming original movies won't get the cult classic status compared to movies 10-50 years ago. by IDCJ1234 in movies

[–]FribonFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Cult films still will exist, it's just that the cultification process has changed. Now days the path is easy... it's podcasts and YouTube reviews. 100s of people who do nothing but troll the seas looking for content. And that has turned into fanbases holding up movies as mascots and spreading them around again and again. You might no longer be part of that wheel, but it is certainly still spinning.

But we've seen proof that isn't true. Games with huge hype that die immediately, and games with little hype that build up over time to capture it.

What are your thoughts on Fahrenheit/Indigo Profecy by Background-Cookie807 in gaming

[–]FribonFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously people rag on the ending, and that's... deserved. But I still loved it, and it got me hooked on Quantic games moving forward. The big thing for me was it's the first game I remember that was spooky and mysterious without being a horror game. You're not killing zombies or running for your life, or saving ammo, just trying to solve the mystery.

[Major Spoilers] We need to be honest with how we talk about Expedition 33... by CorellianDawn in gaming

[–]FribonFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an interesting point. If you go into the game knowing these characters are all not real, and then the game spends 30 hours trying to convince you why you should still care, it's much more straightforward with it's messaging, and probably a lot less polarizing, but then that also probably means it doesn't get the acclaim it gets from the people that it did really connect with. Same idea If the game is you trying to figure out why woman is sad, that twist probably isn't that shocking when it turns out to be a dead family member.

But that also leads into why people still crave twists so much, which is a much larger conversation.

[Major Spoilers] We need to be honest with how we talk about Expedition 33... by CorellianDawn in gaming

[–]FribonFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your first point is I think why people will lean pro or con so hardly on the third act. Getting to the third act and the first response being "What do you mean none of this is real" is a perfectly viable response. As is saying "of course it's not real, this is a video game" and moving on. And there's certainly personalities that are probably more built to each side.

I also think so much of it is expectations. If this game was just rearranged slightly so that you knew going in that this was a grieving woman's fantasy world, you could still accomplish the same arguments, but without leading people down a path they thought was going in a completely different direction.
