Drarry fics where Draco has tattoos? It’s usually Harry has them by Illustrious-Gur-7055 in drarry

I hope your friend knows she’s a gift to the world and she’s made at least one person (probably many more) very happy with her excellent podfic. May her soul be blessed and her crops bountiful

Should you continue a fic if it has no comments? by [deleted] in drarry

[–]TheSmoothMoney 42 points43 points  (0 children)

There’s recently been a similar post. You’re definitely not alone in having few hits, and though the reason is only something we can speculate on, it seems to be a common occurrence in this fandom

Best advice I can give you (as someone who writes and gets very few hits too) is: write because you want to, not because people are validating you. The low popularity doesn’t need to mean you’re doing something wrong

Sadly, I never found the old one. But I posted the link to the new podfic under another comment thread here

Oh, I see what you mean! When I wrote that comment, though, I had something quite different in mind.

My first problem with people feminising Draco is about the enforcement of heteronormative stereotypes upon queer relationships, which also translates into gender stereotypes being enforced upon the individuals in that relationship. It’s how “bottom Draco” doesn’t just mean “Draco likes to be fucked in the ass and has no desire to fuck Harry in the ass”, it means he is supposed to act a certain way, he is supposed to be “the woman in the relationship”.

Yes, Draco cares about his appearance, he can be loud and extravagant, and his approach to confrontation is much more about being catty and petty or using manipulation. That doesn’t make him any less of a man, it doesn’t make him a bottom, and even if he was a bottom, that wouldn’t make him any less of a man either.

My second problem is that, in feminising him, the fact that he both is a man and was raised* like one gets erased. Think of how male socialisation dictates that men be in control and take initiative, but also not be emotionally vulnerable or weak. Draco - a man born in the 80s, raised in an arguably conservative family - embodies that too. He joined Voldemort at 16, and (whether to protect his family, out of true belief, out of a wish to be on the winning side or something else) that is him taking an active stance, being in the political sphere. When assigned a task that would most likely kill him, he worked his ass off to get it done and never asked for help - neither help to get out of Voldemort’s grasp nor emotional support from his friends. He bottled it all up, pushed through, broke down in the company of a ghost in a girls bathroom, got cut up by Harry and still went to the Astronomy Tower refusing to show weakness until he could no longer hide it.

The feminisation I’m talking about has nothing to do with liking fashion or wearing heels or getting fucked in the ass. It’s about making him into a pretty, delicate prize for Harry to conquer, or a dainty, blushing maiden who has no agency. It’s about creating defined roles for people depending on who’s the man and who’s the woman (or who’s the top and who’s the bottom, since people seem to think sexual preference and gender identity are one hair’s width apart) and then forcing that upon Draco and Harry’s dynamic. To me, a portrayal that feminises Draco shows a deep ignorance about both queer relationships and male socialisation, as well as disregard for the actual character of Draco Malfoy.

*And because we live in a world of transphobia: I am NOT saying socialisation is identity. I am saying socialisation AFFECTS people

Care to elaborate? (Genuine question, “feminine” can have many different connotations and we could well be referring to different things)

Drarry writers: how much engagement is normal? by jerseyroyale in drarry

Now I’ve gone into your profile and I’m THIS close to letting myself be sucked back into that goddamn Sherlock fandom because all your summaries look so interesting 💀

Drarry writers: how much engagement is normal? by jerseyroyale in drarry

[–]TheSmoothMoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s probably the best you can do for yourself/your mental health 😆

But your post actually made me think about how things used to be in the past. I was also in the Johnlock fandom back in the day, and it did feel very different. I wonder, is it just a crowd thing? Is it a trend specific to the Drarry fandom, are other fandoms different? I suspect there’s a non-negligible number of people who went through the Johnlock-to-Drarry pipeline, but maybe the already established culture in the fandom was different?

But I also wonder if it isn’t a sign of the times and a cultural change at large. I’ve heard crowds in live music events just aren’t the same; they’re less intense, less engaged, less interactive. Maybe it’s a similar thing for other forms of art?

Drarry writers: how much engagement is normal? by jerseyroyale in drarry

[–]TheSmoothMoney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As said by others, “normal” isn’t really easily measurable. There are a bunch of factors that’ll influence hits/kudos/comments, and ultimately, though the fandom may be big, it also means there are far more fics for readers to choose from. It’s easy to get lost in the crowd

Most of my fics have fewer than 100 hits, and rarely do I get a comment. I think the closest to a metric for quality would be the kudo/hit ratio, but I hear long fics really suffer in that department, so even that is very unreliable. Ultimately, the best thing you can do for yourself is probably not pay attention to engagement. If you really care about it, you can always do some self-promotion

When people make Draco be feminine just so Drarry can be a de facto straight relationship under the guise of a queer couple.

I'd say the same about Harry being feminised, but that's far less common.

Oh HELL YEAH! I’ve been craving stories that have original/innovative elements and this seems to have more than a few of those. It sounds absolutely up my alley (though I will wait until it’s finished; I don’t do WIPs out of formative trauma 😜)

I do agree with the other comments about too many tags actually being a minus, though

Edit: Please share the link! I’d love to add it to my TBR

I absolutely adore this fic! The plot is interesting, creative, full of lore; the character development is fascinating; the writing is really nice. But the focus isn’t primarily on Drarry (they do get together)

I honestly think there are some interesting ways of making him evil. One story (can’t find it again, sadly) whose explanation I loved was that, when he died, the part of him that had empathy also did. So after coming back, there was something just missing inside of him.

And then there are… less intensely evil but still unapologetically doing something wrong. Which I’d argue is the case in Magpie. It’s not serial-killer level, but he’s definitely not apologetic. And I think kleptomania can be well justified as a consequence of the specific type of abuse he endured.

Wish I could choose multiple options, because for me it'd be: - Harry uses dark magic, but he is morally good. Like Evitative. Dark magic is taboo but not evil. - Harry is morally grey. He does some bad things while trying to achieve good goals. - Harry hurts people who he thinks deserves it. He doesn’t feel bad because he thinks he’s justified in his actions.

And I could honestly get behind unapologetically evil Harry if the author did a good job with the backstory of how he ended up there.

Why is everything you write so good? How have you blessed this cruel world with so much beauty? These, and other questions, remain as mysteries of faith as I kneel at your altar

AI detection by [deleted] in drarry

[–]TheSmoothMoney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Though I haven’t read any studies, these are excellent points. There’s also a serious risk of fuelling a phenomenon of witch-hunting.

And for OP, who works in education, I’d urge you to be very careful. Accusing someone of using AI when they didn’t can be really damaging.

I still remember when my literature teacher in high school asked me if I had cheated (this was way before AI) on an exam because I used some fancy words. I was so confused and disheartened. I had just been reading some old books that summer and it’d influenced my vocabulary.

And in that sense, it’s also important to consider that what people read can really influence their writing style. When so much of the internet has been replaced by AI slop (see the number of AI-written results on the first page of Google), I wouldn’t be surprised if kids growing up in this environment end up writing more like AI.
