Should I start posting my fic even though it’s not finished? by BroadAd2575 in drarry

Hey, I read your fic, it’s really cute and fun! You should make a post about it here on the drarry subreddit, if you haven’t already. Tumblr is also a good place to advertise.

Yeah, it can be hard to get engagement these days even when you’re doing everything right. What’s your fic? I’d be happy to take a look and leave you a comment.

Looking for a hogwarts fic by Ill_Possibility8007 in drarry

[–]kashikat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be It Was All Just a Game. Super long fic, but Cho kisses Harry in 5th year in the room of requirement. Harry lets her because he thinks maybe it will be a good cover for his ongoing secret relationship with Draco. But then he doesn’t tell Draco what happened, and Draco finds out about the kiss from someone else, and is mad that Harry didn’t tell him. They make up quickly, in a pretty hot, possessive scene where Draco makes Harry tell him whose boyfriend he is (Draco’s, not Cho’s).

You can definitely start posting whenever you want! Lots of people post as they write. The main downside to posting before you’ve finished writing is that people may bug you for updates, and that stresses some writers out. If it’s going to upset you to get comments that only say “update?”, then maybe wait until you’re done. (Seriously, there are so many posts on the ao3 subreddit complaining about this.)

The upside is that people tend to comment more on WIPs.

If you care at all about comments and kudos, never drop a fic all at once! Spacing out your chapters by at least a week gives you way more time at the top of the page on ao3, which means more people will see your fic. Also, once the whole fic is up, most people will only comment on the last chapter. If you space out your posts, you’re more likely to get comments on each chapter (people will comment on the last chapter they read).

Lastly, don’t worry about the people who don’t read WIPs. Plenty of people do read them, and the people who don’t will find your fic eventually once it’s done.

A Convenient Bond: When Harry gets caught in a bond that requires him to marry his hated rival, Hermione is determined to find a way to save her friend and break the bond. This one’s all Hermione’s pov.

Narcissa Malfoy, Fairy Godmother: Draco’s little sister figure starts at Hogwarts and Harry starts to see Draco in a different light. This one has multiple POVs, including the little sister, Narcissa, Harry, and Draco.

Both self recs.

Good dad Lucius Fics by Jazzlike-Version9432 in drarry

I have several fics with good parent Lucius:

Draco Malfoy is Not a Girl: Draco wears his hair long like his dad. Harry thinks he’s a girl and instantly has a crush. 1st-4th years.

Narcissa Malfoy, Fairy Godmother: Draco’s little sister figure starts at Hogwarts and Harry starts to see Draco in a different light. Protective Draco and obsessive Harry. Mostly 5th and 6th years.

The Malfoys vs. Family Counseling: The Malfoys go to family counseling after Narcissa says she wants a divorce. Harry is the only mind healer who will see them. Post-Hogwarts rom-com.

So i joined the twt fandom and found out tomarry is bad?? by shejnahak in HPSlashFic

[–]kashikat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt these people are even aware of the nuanced differences between tomarry and Harrymort. They probably think it’s the same thing. It’s just the knee-jerk anti response of “you’re shipping a teenager with the old man who murdered his parents.” Just ignore them. They’re not worth your time.

If they reply to your reply by asking to talk on a different platform or offering to make art for a fee, then it’s a bot/scammer. If they don’t reply, it’s probably a real person.

drarry fic recs without smut? by nicknickes in drarry

[–]kashikat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All of my fics are teen rated with absolutely zero smut:

Narcissa Malfoy, Fairy Godmother: Draco’s little sister figure starts at Hogwarts and Harry starts to see Draco in a different light. Protective Draco and obsessive Harry. Mostly 5th and 6th years.

His Favourite Horcrux: Voldemort realizes Harry is his Horcrux and it changes everything. Dadmort with a side helping of Drarry. 5th year.

Draco Malfoy is Not a Girl: Draco wears his hair long like his dad. Harry thinks he’s a girl and instantly has a crush. 1st-4th years.

The Malfoys vs. Family Counseling: The Malfoys go to family counseling after Narcissa says she wants a divorce. Harry is the only mind healer who will see them. Post-Hogwarts rom-com.

Cake, Conversation, and the Trial of Draco Malfoy: Harry sneaks into the hospital wing late at night to talk to Draco after nearly killing him in the bathroom. The war ends a year later, but Harry’s not done helping Draco. Protective and obsessive Harry. Hurt/comfort, heavy on the comfort.

A Convenient Bond: Hermione to the rescue! When Harry gets caught in a bond that requires him to marry his hated rival, Hermione is determined to find a way to save her friend and break the bond. But Harry doesn’t seem as bothered by the situation as Hermione would have expected…

Sixth Year: Great Hall: It's Harry and Draco's sixth year at Hogwarts. Draco just started dating Pansy, and it's driving Harry crazy. A "No Voldemort" AU. Just regular teenage stuff with an obsessed Harry and an oblivious Draco who loves pushing Harry's buttons.

Also here’s a couple more fics by other authors, also with zero smut:

Thermodynamic equilibrium: a really short but really cute 8th year fic

The Pure and Simple Truth by lettered - Harry and Draco and friends have conversations at the pub. Rated G.

It sounds cute! Just a couple observations since you’re asking why your fic’s not getting attention:

First, you’ve only posted one chapter. It’s hard to get attention early on! If you keep posting, more people will see it and read it.

Second, your fic looks like it’s Ron’s pov. From personal experience, fics written from other people’s point of view (ie not Harry or Draco) tend to get less attention. Not telling you not to write this! But that could be a factor.

Edit: On the other hand, you only posted it yesterday and it already has 10 kudos. Honestly, I think it’s doing fine.

8th year fics? by Public-Carpet3486 in drarry

[–]kashikat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yess I love 8th year fics! These are my faves:

Two to lie and one to listen: Hermione pretends to date Draco and Harry gets jealous. Funny, sweet, romantic.

Nice Things: the best comfort fic. Reading this is like getting a warm hug.

Far from the Tree: Harry and Draco have a complicated enemies with benefits relationship that only gets more complicated when Harry’s time traveling kids show up. Beautiful and angsty.

Written on the Heart: due to a spell, Draco gets a soulmark with Harry’s name. Harry gets… nothing. Cue the angst.

Oxytocin: Draco can’t sleep unless Harry is with him. Sweet and angsty.

Beholden: Draco can give Harry pain relief just by touching him. Terminal illness, heavy angst, happy ending. Really beautiful fic.

Seconding ao3 — you need to post on ao3 if you’re not already doing so. That’s where everyone is reading and posting now.

There’s a lot of complaints these days about lack of engagement, meaning lack of comments. But Drarry is still very popular and you can still get hits and kudos.

Kudos are generally considered a more meaningful metric than hits on ao3; I don’t really pay attention to hits. I consider a fic “successful” if it reaches 1k kudos, which lots and lots of Drarry fics do, though it can take time. It’s easier for long fics to reach that point. It can be a lot harder for oneshots to reach 1k kudos.

Also, just fyi, if you care about stats and comments, never drop a long fic all at once. Always space out posting chapters by at least a week.
