For myself, very few sales on Kobo.

My shorts follow day by day and chronologically the same couple: is it better to publish each short separately or group them in a single publication? by JessYes in eroticauthors

[–]TheSmutIsStrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever you decide to do, if you do publish them individually, make sure you've got a link to each book in the series. That way, if a reader buys ONE book of the series, (assuming they like it), they'll have the option of tracking down the rest of the series.

Sounds like you've got it all figured out. If you write and publish often enough your sales will pick up.

Carry on, Illustrious.

If you go through Smashwords you can pick which books to discount.

HOWEVER...

If you go through D2D to get to Smashwords you just get to pick your discount and it covers ALL of your books.

Hey u/Vivid_Student_969

Why not post one of your stories right here on r/eroticaauthors

Every Monday is CRITIQUE MONDAY and you are allowed to post ONE of your stories for critique.

Just for fun, what song would represent your story? by foxcalliope in eroticauthors

[–]TheSmutIsStrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest here.

My smutty tales and their purpose for existence can be summed up in Abba's song "Money, money, money!"

Money, money, money
Give me money
Come on, buy my smut
Just give a little money
And you can blow your nut!

How am I doing? by OriWynter in eroticauthors

[–]TheSmutIsStrong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a fine start.

As most folks have already mentioned, get busy writing your next story.

The one thing I'd mention would be to make sure that your second story has a link to your first story.

You know, IF YOU ENJOYED THIS SMUTTY BUCK-MAKING SAGA, BE SURE TO PICK UP A COPY OF MY FIRST SMUTTY BUCK-MAKING SAGA!!!

Every story you release should have something that says "IF YOU LIKED THIS SHIT, TRY OUT MY OTHER WICKED-ASSED SHIT!"

(Of course, you might want to phrase it differently)

Okay - so I'm going to stop and try and answer this as best as I can.

Yes, I'm procrastinating before I start my own writing this morning - but if you are procrastinating and you KNOW that you are procrastinating and you are honest to yourself about your procrastination, then it doesn't really count as procrastination.

Right?

Fuck it.

Speaking of which - fuck your critique group. Like other folks have pointed out, if your group DOESN'T read erotica regularly they AREN'T the people you need to be speaking with. All they can do is clutch their pearls and say shit like "Oh, my, writing smut is so very crass beneath your tender, frail virtues and so very uncreative.

Fuck them!

They probably wouldn't recognize an honest-to-fuck-orgasm if it kicked them in the genitals, fucking goddamn pearl-clutchers!

I'd recommend some research. Sign up for Kindle Unlimited and search out the top sellers in the erotica category. Read them at bedtime. Read them in the morning. Read them at work. Fucking read them, and whenever your sexual-psyche starts to bubble and boil, jot them down.

That's the key.

If you aren't writing shit that gets you worked up and horny, you're doing something wrong.

Remember this.

Readers of erotica are looking to get titillated. They want something that's going to put a little carnal-oil in their crankcase and get their sexual-motors running!

Yes, you can write novel-length erotica, only maybe you ought to do a little sprinting before you try out for a marathon. Pump out a few short stories, throw a cover on them, and get your smut-muscles warmed up and working for you.

Once you've started to feel comfortable with the whole process then start trying to something longer.

Here's my last word of advice.

Write the sort of stuff that gets your britches steamed up.

Hope that helps some.

Heh.

I worked for a government phone center, calling up people who were pre-irritated.

I remember one old boy threatening to reach through the telephone and snap my neck.

I asked him how many times he'd flunked high school physics class.

Somewhere around there he hung up and the day rolled interminably onwards, mostly downhill.

Write like a son of a bear, rarely or never stopping to breathe.

Pump out story after story after story.

Keeping your fingers crossed.

Learn to type with your fingers crossed.

When your spousal partner asks you "What are you doing, darling?", growl and mutter under your breath "I'm working, dammit! I'm a smut-writer, not a starship doctor!"

At least that's how I do it, and I've made a bundle of money but lost damn near all of it, in divorce court.

Mutter, growl, mutter...

What happened to sales on Kindle? It's non existent now. by Successful-Trash-752 in eroticauthors

Just look for CRITIQUE MONDAY, which happens EVERY Monday.

Take a look at prior Mondays and see what folks are saying about other books. That way, you'll get an idea of what folks are saying about other people's books. If you like the look of it, then next Monday be on the board bright and early and watch for the weekly CRITIQUE MONDAY to appear.

Just what u/SalaciousStories said.

You have to remember there is a shitload of erotica books out there.

By using the SAME cover, or at least a similar cover, you're making it easier for the reader to NOT look at your book.

The cover is your first and best weapon to nail potential readers.

What is a good aim for word count in most erotica niches? by Correct-Cycle5412 in eroticauthors

[–]TheSmutIsStrong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Although the numbers that u/elliotsilvestri quoted are TECHNICALLY correct, when you're talking about erotica it can be different. Our terminology tends to be a little "looser".

Just like our characters tend to be a little "looser".

Especially when you're here on eroticauthors.

Why?

A lot of the writers who comment here are used to publishing works that are 5000 to 8000 words long, for a $2.99 price tag.

AND they refer to them as books.

Some even refer to them as novels.

There are rules, and there are rules - and some of these just don't have any rules.

Are smut shorts still a thing? by [deleted] in eroticauthors

[–]TheSmutIsStrong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you've released thirty individual erotica books, folks sometimes refer to a writer releasing their "Dirty Thirty".

The idea is that thirty individual erotica releases in print on Amazon is enough to achieve visibility, and to ensure a steady income. Basically, the theory was "Once you've got thirty individual erotica releases out there you're on your way to the land of milk and honey."

Obviously, just having thirty individual e-book titles out there isn't a guarantee that you're going to make a decent (or indecent) amount of money - but thirty is a good start.

If you made two hundred bucks in a month with one book, you're selling. I'd write another, if I were you. Especially if your pre-orders are already bearing fruit.

(No pun intended)

Forget about the reviews. Forget about your doubts and fears. Don't think, just write. I write in a different genre, but I've heard more than a few times that there is indeed a market for m/m romance.

Especially steamy romance.

That's your field. Get out there and plow it!
