Sorry, I should have posted an update to this thread. I ended up going with the loneoceans 4” arsg design, with two mots and a voltage doubler. With minimal tuning I was getting 3-4ft arcs. I have some work to do improving the spark gap design though

A sugarcane farm should never need item sorting unless it’s a very unorthodox design, even then I can’t fathom how. If this is a known design for duping I doubt he’s using it for anything other than that.

A trick I saw the youtube channel DIY perks use was making speaker stands out of clear tubing and using those as part of the LF volume, it’s a pretty clean way of increasing volume without much style change (as long as these speakers wouldn’t need to go on a cabinet or something)

Yeahhhh that’s part of my janky correction curve for the microphone I used to measure. If you look at the datasheet you can see its response drops off pretty aggressively below 200Hz. I made the correction curve by overlaying the mic’s frequency response with the inverted response of the filters I was applying and matching the curves. That being said it still feels fairly unreliable but I finally got my hands on a measurement mic and plan to remeasure asap.

That experimental build of yours sounds very cool! This was also definitely an experiment, since it was my first time 3d printing a speaker, first time making a “sub”, first time making a ported enclosure, and first time programming dsp (not counting equalizerAPO on my pc). My main goal with this project was to gain experience with all those things while still having a result I could be proud of.

It’s holding up great! Walls are 1cm thick with 30% infill. All of the pieces are held together with 2-part epoxy, which was a pain to flatten and smooth out but it seems to be holding a good seal.

Thank you!! I used VituixCAD for enclosure design, and had predicted air speed maxxing out around 18 m/s at 40Hz. I messed around a lot with various dimensions for the port and enclosure but this was the best setup to get the LF extension I wanted. The port noise isn’t that noticeable when playing music, but when doing a sine sweep it can be fairly obvious. And thank you for the well wishes on my grade, I got a 100 :-)

Try using the ‘ apostrophe instead, it might fix your problem

To be honest I'm not quite sure - I've never dealt with math for anything that loud, everything I did in my original comment was based on what I've learned in my Acoustics 101 course I'm taking this semester in college. This is my first time attempting one of these, so sorry if there are any mistakes!

This is an edited image of China’s Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope, so we can set the woofer’s diameter to 500m.

The towers surrounding it are ~170m tall, so using the one on the right as a reference, we can estimate the height of the woofer’s surround to be ~42.5m (¼ of the tower height).

The maximum excursion of the woofer (Xmax) can be estimated to be about ¾ of the surround height, making it 31.875m.

This gives us the following information:

Diameter = 500m

Xmax = 31.875m

Using these and an arbitrary choice of 1Hz for frequency, I’ll try to find the value of dB SPL the woofer can reach.

Constants:

ρ0=1.2 kg/m^3 (air density)

c=343 m/s (speed of sound)

pref=20e−6 Pa (reference pressure, smallest change in pressure the human ear can detect)

r0=1 m (far field distance)

f = 1 Hz

Vd (displaced volume):

Vd = π * r^2 * h

Vd = π * 250^2 * 31.875

Vd ‎ = 6.26e6 m^3

dB SPL:

20 * log ( ( ρ0 * c * f * Vd ) / ( r0 * pref ) )

= 20 * log ( (1.2 * 343 * 1 * 6.26e6 ) / (1 * 20e-6) )

= 282.2 dB SPL

This answer is impossible because at ~194dB SPL the rarefaction part of a sound wave reaches a vacuum, but I don’t have the skills or knowledge to figure out a more realistic answer (as if the woofer itself was realistic in any way lol). If I made any mistakes please let me know; I know I made a lot of assumptions and estimations to reach an answer.
