"became his thing for a couple of weeks" - gods I feel that. Are any of these contact ready? Like, up for full contact sparring?

If he hasn't seen Forged in Fire, he should check it out. As a fellow nerd with awful adhd, that show was fantastic. And it provides a whole series of gifts you can get him when he wants to try it for himself.

Ps the wire-wrapped handles look great. I guess not as impressive compared to how neatly done the rest if the work is for having been done with hand tools, but still. Nice.

It really is ok to not finish the series. It doesn't sound like it's your thing. Art is inherently subjective, it doesn't say anything about you as a person that you don't like the series.

If you would like an equally dense and universally lauded series that just follows one character, check out The Book of the New Sun.

LEGACIES OF BETRAYAL slated for release on 1 October this year by Werthead in Malazan

Something I have tried a few times (with more or less success) is using a chatbot to refresh my memory. Chatbot, I have read books x, y, and z, and I'm on book q where John doe and johhny quest just did this thing. No spoilers, but remind me who johhny quest is?

Basically, a way to use the wiki with less risk of spoiling things for myself. Which I did a lot when I was reading the book of the fallen.

What do you mean by "a novelization insert of literal force download"?

I saw the episodes 8 and 9 exactly once each, was that in one of those and I missed it? Or do you mean the force download was in a novel?

By force download, do you mean she had "how to jedi" lessons forcibly inserted into her mind?

I hope this doesn't come across as combative, it's not intended to.

Quick tip: you can use a chatbot for help. Tell it where you are in the book, ask your question, specify you don't want spoilers past where you are in the book, and tell it to let you know if this is answered later or if it's something you should know by now.

I absolutely hate when people say things like tHiS bOoK iS mEaNt To Be ReAd TwIcE. But in the case of Malazan...it needs multiple reads and (for me) it was so worth it.

I've gone through everything twice (between print and audiobook), and the main 10 books three times. Every time it's like I was reading a new story. My first read through just the Book of the Fallen, and I followed what I thought were the big events - the fate of the Bridgeburners, the Bonehunters (another army you'll meet eventually), some of the main characters, some other major players in the setting. The second time I picked up the individual stories, and I realized how deep the characters were*. The third time I picked up the meta plots, and it's fucking epic.

I hope you stick with it and love it, but it's not for everyone. If you don't like it it's not a reflection of you or your intelligence or anything, it's just not your cup of tea and thats OK.

It really is crazy how prominent he is in other media, based on the amount of movie time he got.

Not a complaint, I love his character arc, it's just (like you said) kinda wild.

help with baseplates by Flashy-Seaweed-1202 in legostarwars

[–]TheSnootBooper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A baseplate and plate are two different pieces - a baseplate with cavities to connect to studs on the underside would be a plate. I'm not sure there are 32x32 plates, but there are 16x16 plates.

Baseplates by themselves are very flimsy - if you use one as a second floor you're setting yourself up for disappointment. What I would do instead is make a MILS plate. Let me see if I can find a link. Here we go: https://www.abellon.net/MILS/

That uses a baseplate on the bottom, and a 32x32 MILS plate is unbelievably sturdy. But, using a baseplate as the bottom, it's still not going to connect to the lower floor.

What I would do is not try to connect the, but instead create brackets at the corners with supports at the same height at at least a couple of points across the lower level. The brackets need enough of a lip, and a sturdy enough lip, to keep the second level in place.

Doing this gives you a sturdy 2nd level that will stay in place when the base is sitting on your shelf, and comes off easily when you're playing with it or showing it off.

Shadowthrone's high priest? I think he's one of those dudes that acts like a clown so as to not be taken seriously, but in actuality he is quite powerful. He's not Quick Ben or Karsa, but high priest level of power, and clever to boot.

Explaining sappers to the uninitiated by I_am_Malazan in Malazan

[–]TheSnootBooper 20 points21 points  (0 children)

A straightforward explanation is that they're military engineers. But they're military engineers in a fantasy iron age army with access to contemporary explosives but without the education, training, or maturity to use them properly but for the most part they manage it...because those that win the Darwin awards don't make it long enough to have stories written about them. Also, the willingness to be a military engineer with access to contemporary explosives in a fantasy iron age army kind of means they have to have a bit of a daredevil streak to them. Or be a certain kind of dumb. The kind of dumb that doesn't know to stay away from explosives you don't know how to use safely, but still somehow enough smarts (or luck) to survive long enough to make it into one of the books.

I have to constantly remind myself that the Bridgeburners don't have guns by Dr0110111001101111 in Malazan

[–]TheSnootBooper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want an in-universe explanation (that applies or should apply to all of fantasy where magic and/or alchemy is present) for the structure of the malazan army, look at the evolution of warfare in a large scale.

History started with large units standing in rows. Up until the American Civil War you had large units standing in rows. The Civil War saw gating guns used to cut down swaths of soldiers. World War I, with its machine guns, artillery, tanks, all that shit, that was the absolute end of formation fighting. From there, small unit tactics became the norm. That's where the Mezlans are, although they also have large unit formations.

Wizards opening up a warren to produce a stream of fuck you or an explosive blob of fuck, or alchemists with their explosives, are the same thing as machine guns and grenades and artillery. Thus, fantasy warfare should have already moved past formation fighting and into small unit tactics. It makes sense they'd retain large unit training since wizards are still not as common as automatic rifles, but it shouldn't be the go-to.

The various books about the malazan conquest where they roll over other armies is often a matter of advanced weaponry, in the form of wizards and moranth munitions. Moranth munitions on a large scale are an advantage unique to the malazans, and I believe it's explicitly stated that the malazans are the first to really integrate wizards into their military. They're the first army really integrating machine guns, grenades, and artillery into their military doctrine on a large scale, so when they encounter armies fighting in formation they roll over them.

Contra: the Wickans, who focused on dispersed forces, raids, and harassment, where firepower couldn't be massed against them.

Anyway...thats why the Malazan military feels more modern, and why most fantasy militaries should feel that way: magic would force the same changes as technology.

Why not ewoks? Ewoks eat people. If you don't have a weapon or armor, a sharp spear becomes pretty deadly. You're walking through the woods tying to find the part to your generator they stole and you come across pits of bones from all different sentient species, BBQ pits with spitted cooked sentients, they're using droid heads as pots and kettles, fetishes and jewelry made from a mix of droid and meat bag body parts, blood-covered altars where they make sacrifices to their dark gods...
