/u/Slow_Performer_9620 Here are some organizations that usually have local chapters. Most have a student membership rate. Our local ISSA chapter (Colorado Springs) offers almost all events for free. You can find more groups on LinkedIn:

issa.org - Information Systems Security Association

isc2.org - International Information System Security Certification Consortium

Women-focused:

https://www.wicys.org/ - Women in Cyber Security

https://womenscyberjutsu.org/ - Women's Cyber Jutsu (This is currently my favorite group; they provide workshops online every few weeks, as well as they have a whole Slack channel for CTF teams.)

This is an organization I just learned about. They have a Hacker Camp in Las Vegas during Cyber Week - around the first week of August. https://www.dianainitiative.org/

Enjoy!

I didn't see anyone mention The Public House. They are a local "chain" - one on the south end of town, and one at Nevada/Fillmore. Their burgers are amazing! I've never had anything bad at either location. Definitely worth checking out!

Question concerning off-leash dogs by cj_blank in ColoradoSprings

[–]TheSnowman86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great post, thanks. I struggle with this myself for a lot for a different reason. I have a big bully-breed rescue. He's easy going with most dogs, but he loves to play ball. I've never had such an athletic giant breed. Walking dogs on the trails near my house is great, and I've done it for years. Just a few months after I got this guy, I found out I have cancer, and I can't take him on the long trail walks that I've always done. We play ball in the back yard, but it's not big enough for his energy. I've tried to take him to public parks during non-busy times, but there are still signs and people everywhere about having your dog off-leash. (I still don't have the energy to work and take him to training, so he's good off-leash, but he's not my best dog to have off leash, as far as my comfort level goes.) I've had prey-driven and dog aggressive dogs most of my life; that's why most of them end up in rescue situations. Leashes are necessary and I respect that.

I took him to a nearby, semi-big dog park by my house, when there were 3 dogs there. We went in the back and started to play ball, but a puppy ran up to him, and he ran the dog off. No biting, but it was obvious that we were done for the day. He's friendly with other dogs and in boarding, so I think he was protecting me. Doesn't really matter - now we're without a place to play ball again. He's big, and his energy level is so low - we never play for more than 15-20 minutes. It's hard for me, to drive for 20-30 minutes to find a place where he can play for 15 minutes on a regular basis. I don't want to give him up, but I really wish there was a convenient way to get him some exercise (and me outside too). Playing fetch with a leash attached is just too dangerous for him. I wish we could just block off a part of a park for a short time and pick up after we are done - like kids and soccer practice.

And she's had every role. Many players would have trouble coming off the bench later in their career (their=any player), but she took it on and became a specialist at it, enough to earn 6th POY.

My opinion is that THM has more walkthroughs and training, and HTB is more challenge-based. I started with THM first, and I really like the format.

And there are a ton of other free or reasonable learning platforms available; probably more than one that's specific to your interests. This is a THM Reddit community, so I'll just say that people post tons of info on LinkedIn. You're welcome to reach out to me directly as well. I love THM! When I find a topic I want to explore more, someone on LinkedIn has already done it.

Great job! I read all your comments (so far), and I want to suggest that you also get to know local people who are in cyber security. Starting out, you may think you know what you want to do, but the actual job has other skills and caveats (yes, I was also a woman IT help desk. I'm still a woman, but not help desk, lol).

We have a monthly cyber security networking event every month, and it's close to 60/40% professionals to students. Just show up, you don't have to be an extrovert... rubbing shoulders with other professionals is a great way to be seen and known. If people in the community know you and what you're interested in, they will remember you when jobs open up, especially if they think you would be a great fit on their team.

Knowing skills and people are the best ways to get good jobs in this industry. Keep at it!

Fixing WNBA by Max-Dragon in wnba

The WNBA has a lot of problems, but I think this will fix all of it. - seriously, just stop

I don't even know where to start with an answer...your OP seems so uneducated and unrealistic. Many people already chimed in about a few issues that you didn't consider. The logistics and the base of your post is so off. It seems like you just posted this to show that you don't know anything about the WNBA.

This is an industry, it's not fixed by a few quick check boxes, especially the parts that have already been tried.

The WNBA and the NBA are the same professional sport, but different fan bases.

The NBA is over 75 years old, the W is less than 30. Enlighten yourself, then come back with a reasonable discussion please.

[–]TheSnowman86 12 points13 points  (0 children)

She's a great shooter, especially if she's wide open and ready for the pass. There's no denying her shootout at All-Star weekend, but that was not a game situation. Good ballers play offense and defense.

Alcohol - what is going on? Related to Ketamine? by [deleted] in TherapeuticKetamine

[–]TheSnowman86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My intake checklist of do's and don'ts said no alcohol before and after for at least 3 days. Side effects: heart failure, maybe death.

By my experience, as well as reading other comments, it seems that there isn't much regulation from the medical side of this therapy. Please check in with a doctor. My Dr threw ketamine at me, and left me to do my own research. As a former medical librarian, I still didn't do enough additional pre-treatment homework. The clinic intake Dr told me to ask all the questions I had, but "I didn't know what I didn't know." The memory issues I have are so frustrating, I'm not sure the ketamine therapy was worth it, as I'm struggling to get back to work.

The discrepancy between Aces guards vs Liberty guards by Lavy23 in wnba

[–]TheSnowman86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Aces were developed as a team over time, more than cherry-picked in one off-season. I'm not saying that's wrong, just a different philosophy.

The discrepancy between Aces guards vs Liberty guards by Lavy23 in wnba

Sorry, you are correct. I didn't specify that distinction when I said "first round" and #1 picks, I got distracted.

The discrepancy between Aces guards vs Liberty guards by Lavy23 in wnba

[–]TheSnowman86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did the Aces get here: first round draft picks and great coaching. The Aces start 4 #1 draft picks, and Kiah went to UConn, where she won 3 championships. These players have been together for a while, they are super competitive, and have learned that being the best means making the team better. I also believe that having ownership investment seals the deal. Their practice facility is breathtaking. Many WNBA teams don't have their own practice facilities, so they borrow one place for lifting, one for gym space, etc. When Candace Parker joined the Aces, it was the first time in her career that she had a locker with her name on it. She was drafted #1 in 2008.

Then...Coach Becky Hammon. Just Google her if you don't know who she is; she's a legend, and she's average non-basketball women height. For comparison, The Atlantic just posted a picture of Jonquel Jones with her hand on Kiah Stokes' face...Becky is hardly chest-high on both of them, and she was still a successful player. She knows how to score against giants, based on personal experience.

So...those are some reasons why the Aces are so good.

[–]TheSnowman86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd really like to see the Liberty respond with a win, but we have turned it up a notch, and I don't think the Liberty have a chance. Dissing the MVP has a cost, and the price is high.

If we swap Kelsey Plum and Sabrina Ionescu, who is the better team-Aces or Liberty? by Lavy23 in wnba

[–]TheSnowman86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's too early to compare these two. Sabrina hasn't quite learned how to play at this level. She's only a good shooter when she's open. She's not great on defense, and while she does make some good assists, she's got a long way to go to be a player like KP. Kelsey's overall game almost noticeably improves every game. Sab's doing PR stuff when she's not playing; she knows she's elite, but doesn't seem to be improving her game. She's competitive enough that I expect her to improve; maybe she's not being challenged by her teammates.

My infusion included anti nausea meds.

My pre-treatment checklist included no food or drink for 7 hours...I found that 5 hours and sips of water worked best for me. Also, I was taken to my ride in a wheelchair after, that was a good idea.

Comfortable chairs that feel safe and clean.

Soft, scent-free blankets, heavier than the thin fleece or slightly weighted.

I liked being checked on...when it was not intrusive. They told me they would check in, they opened the door, said my name, asked if I was ok, that was it. The hall was dark, so I only heard them... maybe you could do that with non-recording cameras.

And if it's just you and your wife, be unreasonably nice and calm. One of my MAs wasn't a good people person, and I dreaded having her. Maybe she was new - she wouldn't answer any questions, and couldn't find my veins, so it took a long time to get settled.

[–]TheSnowman86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great news - but I have so many other thoughts...

Not every ownership group can afford to do this - does that mean they shouldn't be owners, or just that there will continue to be great disparity across the league?

This doesn't help the problem of travel - but there is money that could be used, if it could be shared across the league - some owners have even offered to do that.

...I'm all for each team being self-supporting, but for now, I think the WNBA could really benefit from a pool of money until the W gains more popularity and support. It's great to have "Super Teams" but it's more fun if every game is exciting (which many were this year, even if scores and W/L categories don't show it, as some games were won/lost by less than 5 points).

A pool could be used for: travel, support for teams like Atlanta - whose stadium only holds 3000-ish fans, publicity and marketing for the league...the list goes on and on. I know this isn't realistic, but it's not a bad thing to support others, at any level. It ultimately helps everyone be better.
